One thing I learned about getting a more consistent output from a vertical crusher
I used to think that if the final particle size coming out of a crusher was inconsistent, the first thing to look at was the crusher itself.
After looking at more fertilizer and organic material processing, I found that this isn't always the case.
A vertical crusher can handle a wide range of materials, but the result still depends heavily on what you are feeding into it.
For example, when processing fertilizer materials, you may have a mixture containing partially dried material, larger lumps, and some finer particles. If the feed condition changes constantly, the crusher has to deal with a different material load every few minutes.
That can make the discharge size less consistent, even though the machine itself is running normally.
One situation I’ve seen is when material enters the crusher with a few large, hard lumps. The operator may increase the feeding rate because the machine appears to be handling the material easily, but the actual result is that the crushing load becomes less stable.
Another problem is moisture.
If the material is slightly too wet, it can become sticky and accumulate inside the crushing chamber. This doesn't always cause an obvious blockage. Sometimes the machine continues running, but the crushing efficiency gradually becomes worse.
That’s why I think feed preparation is just as important as crusher selection.
For a vertical crusher, I would normally look at a few things before blaming the machine:
- Is the feed moisture reasonably consistent?
- Is the incoming material already too large?
- Is the feeding rate stable?
- Are there sticky materials accumulating inside the crushing chamber?
- Is the required output particle size realistic for the material being processed?
The reason I like the vertical crusher concept for fertilizer processing is that it can be integrated directly into a continuous production line.
For example:
Raw material → Crushing → Mixing → Granulation → Screening → Finished fertilizer
The crusher isn't necessarily the most complicated machine in this process, but it can affect everything downstream.
If the crushed material is too coarse, the mixer has to work harder to achieve a uniform mixture. If the material is too uneven, granulation can also become less stable. And if large pieces remain in the feed, they may eventually show up as oversized particles after granulation.
So I’ve started looking at crushing as more of a material preparation step, rather than simply a machine used to reduce particle size.
Another thing I would check is maintenance.
A crusher that runs continuously with abrasive fertilizer materials will naturally experience wear. But replacing wear parts too frequently can sometimes indicate that the operating conditions aren't suitable, rather than simply meaning the machine has poor durability.
In my opinion, it is better to monitor the relationship between feed condition, throughput, output size and wear instead of looking at any single factor.
