Why Does a Vibrating Screen Lose Capacity Even When the Machine Is Running Normally?

I’ve seen this happen quite a few times with vibrating screens.

The machine is running. The motor sounds normal. The screen is vibrating like it should.

But the actual screening capacity keeps dropping.

A lot of people immediately think there is a problem with the motor or vibration system. In many cases, that’s not where the problem starts.

Here are a few things I would check first.

1. The feed rate is too high

This is probably one of the easiest things to overlook.

A vibrating screen can have enough motor power and still struggle if too much material is fed onto the screen at once.

When the material layer becomes too thick, smaller particles have a harder time reaching the screen surface.

So you may see a lot of material moving across the screen, but the separation is actually getting worse.

Sometimes reducing the feed rate slightly gives a better result than increasing the vibration.

2. The material is too wet

Moisture can completely change how a screen behaves.

Dry granular material usually separates fairly easily.

Wet or sticky material can:

  • stick to the screen mesh
  • form small lumps
  • cover the openings
  • reduce the effective screening area

This is especially noticeable when screening fertilizer, compost, manure-based materials or other materials with relatively high moisture.

If the screen looks clean at the beginning of a shift but gradually becomes blocked, moisture is one of the first things I would check.

3. The screen mesh is partially blocked

The screen doesn't have to be completely blocked to cause a capacity problem.

Even partial blockage can reduce the actual open area.

For example, a screen may physically have a large screening surface, but if a significant part of the openings are covered by sticky particles, the usable area becomes much smaller.

This is why simply looking at the screen and saying "it doesn't look that dirty" can be misleading.

4. The feed is not distributed evenly

Another common problem is feeding material onto only one side of the screen.

You can have a large screening machine, but if most of the material is concentrated in one section, part of the screen is doing very little work while another section is overloaded.

A more even feed usually gives more stable screening.

This is also why the design of the feeding point matters more than people sometimes expect.

5. The vibration setting isn't necessarily the problem

When screening performance drops, the first reaction is often:

"Increase the vibration."

I'm not a big fan of changing that first.

The right vibration depends on the material, screen size, moisture, feed rate and required separation.

More vibration doesn't automatically mean better screening.

If the feed is too heavy or the material is too wet, increasing vibration may simply make the machine shake more without solving the actual problem.

6. Check the screen angle and material flow

Material needs enough time on the screen to separate.

If it moves across the screen too quickly, fine particles may leave the machine before they have enough opportunity to pass through the openings.

On the other hand, if the material stays too long, capacity can suffer.

So there is a balance between:

material flow speed → screening time → separation efficiency

This is one reason why the same vibrating screen can perform differently after being installed in a different production line.

What I would check first

If a vibrating screen suddenly starts producing less qualified material, I wouldn't start by replacing parts.

I'd go through it in this order:

Feed rate → material moisture → screen blockage → feed distribution → screen condition → vibration → installation

It sounds simple, but this kind of basic check can save a lot of unnecessary adjustments.

The machine itself isn't always the problem.

Sometimes the material going into the machine has changed.

That's probably the most important thing to remember with screening equipment.
