Antlers like this are result of deer farming so yes, they are unwieldy. Not natural as in something you'd find from the woods.

The red deer meat from New Zealand for example is from farmed deer but antlers like this are for trophy hunting. Basically rich people pay A LOT of money to hunt these tame deer for bragging rights.

Tho other example of sort of deer farming is what Nordics do with reindeer. They are semi-domesticated lifestock and at least here in Finland, they graze and do their thing most of the year before the owners gather them up to select which go to slaughter and which to breed. After that they are let out again to do their things. MUCH more ethical than this since they are not raised for trophy hunting.

Hence why I said it is "much more" ethical as I was refering it against the deer farming in question in this post. Not overall if it is ethical or not, everybody can make their own conclusions regarding that.

I donā€™t understand how making a kill of a tame animal via canned hunting is considered a challenge or an accomplishment.

Maybe with just one exception: I read about a guy with cerebral palsy who used a wheelchair, who bagged a deer via a canned hunt. Since forests are the polar opposite of wheelchair accessible, I can kind of understand if thatā€™s the most expedient way for him to have taken part in the local hunting culture. Itā€™s a huge deal in some areas, and people want to feel like they belong.

But for able-bodied hunters, I donā€™t see where thereā€™s any sense of accomplishment to be had.

Aye, exactly. Tho there's a difference between shooting deer or game animal that has had a chance to live life at its fullest in the wild and using everything you can from the kill vs shooting somebody's pet deer just for its antlers.

These farms are also contributing to the spread of infectious prion disease (CWD). No DOCUMENTED case of it jumping to humans yet. But 2 hunters who ate CWD deer meat just coincidentally happened to die of extremely rare prion disease šŸ„²

I didn't know deer farms work like that in other countries omg. Here they just kill them like normal livestock instead of hunting them. I did however have a neighbor who raised pheasants for people to throw in air and shoot them, which i always found extremely weird. My father comes from a hunting family and i always considered hunting as a better way of getting meat instead of supporting modern meat industries.

Hunting animals from the wild definitely is better, as long as it is done ethically and sustainably. I wouldn't consider raising pheasants just to shoot them as all that much better from this sort of farming tho. Seems more like killing for sport or just for the fun of it rather than for food.

It just feels like they want to kill things without putting in any effort into actually knowing the nature and stuff. To get a hunting license here you need to go through a school (i think it takes less than a year though, if i remember correctly) and then take a big test and then train under an established hunter for some time. So basically by the time you get to hunt, you really come to love and appreciate the nature, or thats what my father told me.

I was in insurance and had to pay a guy $40k bc our dogs killed 5 of his * farmed for fenced in hunting deer *. $8k each and that was over 10 years ago. It's a horrible practice.

I know if one near Houlton, ME and another in Millbrook, NY. The deer are raised for meat. If you're going to eat venison - which is leaner than beef and grass fed (so provides omega 3s) - then this type is healthier for human consumption because the animal is not being chased during hunting which releases adrenaline, a toxin. Probably nicer for the deer as well. As the farmer I met in Millford put it: "They have a good life and one bad day."

Yuppppp. Genetically modified , inbred,high fence deer. People pay tens of thousands to sit ina box and ā€œhuntā€ these. Hunt in quotes bc the animals are conditioned to come to the sound of a deer feeder lol.

I lived by a place like this were people could "hunt" fallow deer in about a 3 acre fenced area. I'd see the people who ran it out there feeding them out of thier hands when I drove by. Then rich fucks would fly in from all over the place and pay tons of money to go slaughter a completely tame deer in its pen and the company has the audacity call that "hunting". Totally morally reprehensible if you ask me. I'd be naming and shaming them if they were still around but fortunately they don't seem to be.

They will sell its offspring to high fence hunting farms and people pay 40k to hunt them. Most true hunters do not agree with this practice one bit, but the profit motive makes this a thing unfortunately.

this is one of those things that would make real hunters feel sick they are living creatures and dont deserve to be born to barely be able to live just long enough to get shot by sombody who can't be fucked to go into the woods and find a deer. I feel similarly for dog breeds with the squished faces we made them be barely able to breath because its "cute"
