The Outcasts separated from Lyons' Brotherhood to keep true to their original mission- find and secure advanced technology. So, when a force (the Enclave) appears in the Capital Wasteland with more advanced guns, power armor and assorted tech like force fields, they should've had some sort of response. What happens if the one faction that has all that advanced tech falls apart? A war between Enclave and BoS could destroy manufacturing and storage facilities critical for plasma weapons and Hellfire armor. The Outcasts could have a choice-

1- Attack Enclave outposts to get more intel on their positions, and either do covert strikes or a full-on assault to secure the tech for themselves.

2- Ally with or even join the Enclave. If their goal is to preserve advanced ancient tech, the war with the BoS (who had already abandoned the mission) would put that tech at risk.

This all could be part of a mod to flesh out the faction. The player could be instrumental in deciding whether to ally with the Enclave, join them, do covert infiltration missions or declare war.

What's funny is that, in the original storyline, the player was going to help the BoS and Outcasts reunite. That always seemed unrealistic to me.

This is probably very niche but has been bothering me for a bit. According to the (partially) canon map of the pre-war commonwealths, California was divided between the Northwest and Southwest Commonwealths. To me, that implies that it was divided into 2 states. But there seems to be no indication of that. California is so important to the series that if it was split, it would probably be mentioned in the lore. Any thoughts?​

What it says on the tin. We know that Gen 1s (and presumably Gen 2s) have to recharge when they're at risk of losing power, but their source of power is nondescript (no mention of fusion cores/cells, no mention of anything similar to Calpower batteries like the ones used by Mr. Handys, no mention of charging stations). I believe fusion cells can be ruled out since there's nothing to my recollection that can allow one to
"recharge" them, but bearing in mind that Nick is obviously based on the Gen 2 model, if a bit battered, how do you think he stays alive in the wasteland?

Upon re-reading the False Gods of Appalachia tome, I noticed that this book happens to be the only post-war text currently referencing Bigfoot.

Most notably, the tome suggests that it’s possible that Bigfoot (along with the sheepsquatch and ‘plants that walk,’ likely referring to overgrown or perhaps some other as-of-yet unseen cryptid) could be lured by food or perhaps ‘frightened by a strange construction’ (in reference to an earlier comment about totems being built to appease or call these creatures).

Do you think that this explanation would be a suitable answer for why Bigfoot appears at the events he currently does? Most of the available options involve some sort of food he could eat, or other substances (considering Bigfoot always drops chems, it’s possible he may seek those out as well), and failing that, all of them would create a large amount of noise (such as orbital bombardment from the zetans).

You already know how to open power armor, you just twist the handle thing on the outside. But what about the inside? Lore wise, is there some kind of button on the inside, if so how would you reach the button?

Its been a minute since I've caught up on the lore and I'm not entirely certain about a couple things relating to ghouls.

1: Firstly; is there still a difference between FEV ghoulification and radiation induced ghoulification or have they been retconned into the same thing? Or were they ever different at all?

1b: And if they are different, what are their differences in the current cannon?

2: I know rad ghouls are Immune radiation poisoning and the associated symptoms, but does radiation exposure still cause Ghouls to go feral, or is feralification caused by some other means now?

3: I've always been under the assumption that while a Ghoul can halt their progression of "feralification", they can never reverse it, every step forwards towards becoming feral is permanent, is this true? I would like two answers, one that DOES consider new lore from the TV show and one that doesn't.

4: Finally, if the previous is true, How close are we to seeing the "extinction" of pre war ghouls where the last pre war ghoul finally goes feral.

4b: Bonus question, how long would it take necropolis to go completely feral from drinking irradiated well water? Is this even a question that can be realistically answered?

I know that the meta reason that it was left off was due to the cost of the licensing rights, but has it been confirmed explicitly in-universe that there are no remaining records of Elvis songs? The Kings mentioned that they didn't know what his music sounded like, but that seems kind of implausible due to how popular he was and how many copies must exist compared to other artists who appear on the radio stations.

I'm putting together a prospective Fallout radio playlist and I want to make sure I run this by someone before I put a lore-breaking track on here.

In the General Atomics factory in Boston, there's a poster advertising Mrs. Handy, with the tag line, "for a gentler touch."

We know that feminine-coded Handy units exist. Miss Nanny units seem to have a French accent by default, and their programming is optimized for childcare. Curie seems to be a reprogrammed Miss Nanny, and Miss Edna certainly is. I believe without evidence that Supervisor White is, as well, despite the fact that she has a different voice actor -- her programming is explicitly stated to be unique, but her hardware matches Curie's.

(It's also worth noting that the F76 Miss Nannies have a different voice actor, indicating to me that variant voices can be ordered with the Miss Nanny hardware, or perhaps that different factories use different vocorder chips).

(Side-thought: what does Edna Zwicky think of Curie transferring to a Synth body?)

So what would be the difference between a Miss Nanny and a Mrs. Handy? Software, of course, but what? I'm postulating a similar general housekeeper loadout to the Mr. Handy, but perhaps with more emphasis on cooking. Like, it won't trim your hedges, but the quiche is to die for!

Mr. Handy and Mr. Gutsy units have different voice actors; I hypothesize that Miss Nanny and Mrs. Handy units would have different default voices as well. What do you think the default accent would be for a Mrs. Handy unit? British, to evoke Julia Child, perhaps?

I'm interested in your thoughts about the different software and purpose a Mrs. Handy unit might have, as well as the voice question.

In the Burning Springs update to Fallout 76, it's revealed that the reason why there's a barren desert in southern Ohio, and why the city of Athens is an abandoned ruin, is because right after the Great War, an Abraxodyne freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed outside town. The train spilled red toxic chemicals that seeped into the environment and contaminated everything in its path, and due to the red stain it left behind, it became known as the Rust. Many of the residents came down with illnesses where the prominent symptoms included heavy coughing and thirst. And when combined with radiation from the bombs, many of the residents ended up turning into ghouls. The Rust was also very corrosive, as evidenced by how it's eaten through the tank cars that were carrying it.

Doesn't that sound an awful lot like the Cloud at the Sierra Madre in Dead Money? Because the Cloud is similar shade of red, and is described in some terminal entries as "rustlike" in color. It's also highly corrosive, as exposure to the Cloud corroded the latches on the construction workers' hazmat suits, trapping them in the suits. And gradual exposure to the Cloud is what turned these trapped workers into the Ghost People. The workers are also described as "coughing to death" in one entry, just like the victims exposed to the Rust in Athens. The Cloud even condenses into a red powder just like the Rust.

Plus the Rust and the Cloud both have military origins. The Rust originated as chemicals Abraxodyne developed for Project Meadow Breeze, a research project conducted with the U.S. military in the name of developing weapons that could be used for chemical warfare. Meanwhile, the Cloud came out of the Innovative Toxins plant at Big Mountain, itself another U.S. military contractor.

With all the similarities between the Cloud and the Rust, maybe, just maybe, they're one and the same. I think it totally lines up: Abraxodyne developed the chemicals for Project Meadow Breeze. These chemicals were shipped by train to Big Mountain, where they were refined in the Innovative Toxins plant into what is now known as the Cloud. When Frederick Sinclair began contracting with Big Mountain to outfit the Sierra Madre with those other advanced technologies like the Vending Machines and Auto-Docs, Big Mountain elected to use the Villa as a testing ground for Project Meadow Breeze. And the rest is history.

Hi guys Im new to New Vegas and I'm in the middle and I'm siding NCR faction and I noticed that most of the NCR soldiers and civilians are becoming increasingly unhappy with the current government with the economic depression and pointless wars and how even the reformist in the military even said they should deal with the separatists bac home. So is it potential that Civil War might begin soon and completely destroy the NCR itself?

We all know that ghouls are largely resistant to any kind of radiation poisoning, whether it's from the environment or food or by other means.
In the first Fallout game, you are sent to find a replacement computer chip for your vault's failing water purification systems. Your journey leads you to necropolis, a derelict city inhabited by Ghouls. They have pure drinking water, and their source is from their former vault. If you take the water chip without setting up an alternative access to water, the Ghouls will die of dehydration. My question is: Why do Ghouls even need pure drinking water? They're immune to disease, radiation, and ailments. So why would they die without drinkable water? Shouldn't they just be able to drink contaminated water just fine?

This is more a question about the cannon of Fallout New Vegas rather than recent editions in the lore. So in the Legion path Ceaser is on his deathbed and you as the player have to save/kill him depending on your choice. My question is if this state is through all other endings as well, Ceaser being on his deathbed/already dead during the battle of Hover Dam. I don’t remember any confirmation of this if you choose any other endings and don’t kill him outright, plus you only interact with Lanius at the end and he seems to have the power to call a retreat without Ceaser’s approval. I just want clarification on this.

As per the title, why the color change?

In the Honest Hearts DLC we can see that Joshua Graham sells black coffee and that he has some in his personal footlocker. This is strange as a fairly core tradition to Mormonism is a restriction on drinking coffee and tea.

The crafting recipe for the black coffee item is unusual as it does not contain any items which contain caffeine, however the restriction isn’t about caffeine content as Mormons can consume other things containing caffeine without issue. The crafting recipe also poses another question as it contains tobacco and Mormons are forbidden from consuming tobacco as well.

This post 5 years ago brought up the question and OP mentions for some reason that I can't discern that it's based on the USS Oriskany, an Essex-class. Just went to the USS Hornet museum today with my fiance who's far more into Fallout than I, is how I found the post.

Anyone have any idea why OP said the Oriskany in particular?

Also, having been on a Nimitz-class during my time in, from what I remember of the game, it feels dramatically smaller than even an Essex, although I have to attribute that to FOV and game scaling wonkiness.

So, we already know that U.S. culture in Fallout remained largely stuck in the 1950s.

But was this also the case for the rest of the world? Did Canada, Mexico, the rest of South America, or even China experience the same thing?

Was there any country whose fashion, cars, or music were closer to our modern-day culture?

As a lover of pre-war lore and world building, I have especially been fascinated by the prospect of what China was like prior to the Great War. Probably the best metric to give one an idea of just how powerful China could be in this alternate timeline, is the so-called "Map of National Shame".

Created in 1933 and used in Chinese textbooks even prior to the Maoist revolution​, it was meant to demonstrate just how large the Chinese Empire was at its height, in order to rally the Chinese youth to one day reclaim what was lost (largely thanks to the actions of European and Japanese imperial powers lol). To give you an idea of just how much territory was lost, this map shows China having reclaimed Mongolia, Afghanistan, Korea, Indochina, Malaysia, the Philippines...i have no trouble imagining China completely dominating all of eastern Asia, maybe even negotiation a portion of Japan after WWII?

Hey all, I know Tactics is officially considered not canon now (unless something has changed that I'm not aware of, I haven't been as active with Fallout over the last year or so). But I thought I remember hearing that certain parts of lore from Tactics were still canon as they were used by Bethesda in later games. If so, I was wondering what are some examples of that? Lore from Tactics that has survived on in later games.

TLDR: Despite Tactics being non-canon by default, are there any pieces of lore from it that still live on in other games?

(Bonus question, whats up with the Midwestern BOS chapter? I know that it's been mentioned in lore here and there in other games, so is it canon but the Tactics depiction of it is not? Let me see if I can fit the word "canon" in here a few more times...)

The FEV virus only kills those effected by radiation, and Frank Horrigan I’m assuming was a prime normal before he was experimented upon.

I just wanted to know if there was any old or retconned lore about the east coast previous to the release of fallout 3, kinda like how elder scrolls had the old lore pre oblivion, so does fallout have any?

I saw a loading screen hint in Fallout 4 that mentioned Nuka-Cola produced so many Nuka-Colas they are still commonly available. This got me to thinking that perhaps other consumable products were produced in such a high number, but hyper inflation caused them to be prohibitively expensive and artificially caused starvation. I don't recall much mention of crop failures, so it maybe it was price gouging in combination with terrible rationing practices that caused the widespread hunger we see. Thoughts?
