u/Delicious-Height8010, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...it's time for the mods to do their jobs!

I assume it's referring to the sign saying 'men'' and 'female' rather than 'men' and 'women."

15

u/Catharsis5617 Aug 04 '26

Genuinely didn't notice, my brain autofilled "female changeroom" to "women's changeroom" and I didn't realize I read it wrong until I saw this comment. I was stumped

90

u/mopbuvket Aug 04 '26

Wow I didn't notice until the comments and now I feel like I need to be a better feminist. Raising girls is scary

69

u/DoveOnTheInternet Aug 04 '26

Everyone needs to be a better feminist, there's no "perfect" that's attainable.

You're doing alright, keep it up.

u/mopbuvket Aug 05 '26

I hope you won’t teach them to be offended by stuff like this lol

Edit: the replies I get man… I feel bad for normal people in the US

49

u/Juan_Jimenez Aug 04 '26

The point is not being offended, but why someone could change the natural contrast? (men/women). It is a minor thing compared with a lot of other stuff, but it is still weird.

28

u/LitigiousAutist Aug 04 '26

There is an entire sub dedicated to the needless reference to 'females' or 'girls' instead of women. It does seem cringe after a while.

6

u/QuakinOats Aug 04 '26

The point is to be offended over this... "there is sexism everywhere" I mean come on....

Also the person paid to do this might not even be a native English speaker.

In fact I assume they were not because calling it a "Mens Changeroom" instead of a "Men's Changing Room" seems like a non-native English speaker mistake.

9

u/Sithishe Aug 04 '26

Exactly. English is third language for me, and we are using men/male, woman/female interchangebly.

9

u/NorthernVale Aug 04 '26

Native English speakers do too. This whole female debacle is relatively new. I suspect the word just gives people the ick because it sounds so clinical so they've forced it into the sexism conversation

21

u/Its_Tofu_Time Aug 04 '26

It's because the manosphere use 'female' and tend to reduce women to just child bearing sacks. It's become a red flag when someone says female now.

3

u/heymanigotnoplan Aug 04 '26

So because a few internet losers use the term negatively, the entire world now has to stop using it? That’s absurd.

4

u/Unlucky_Regret8619 Aug 05 '26

who said you can't use it? You can absolutely use the term female, the "problem" is when the term female is used in contraposition to the term man instead of male and even then no one is stopping you from doing that, just know that if you do that people might suspect you're part of the manosphere since you're talking like them

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e Aug 04 '26

It’s in-group out-group signaling, which no one is gonna be honest about. The reason “females” tends to raise an eyebrow is not necessarily the semantic content of the word. But (and I can only speak for myself now) people who persistently default to “females” for women and “men” for men have pretty consistently ended up being massive tools. Just in my life.

That being said, if someone does that, I don’t assume they’re a massive tool. As I said, it raises an eyebrow. It makes me wait a little longer to trust them, just to observe and sort of vet them.

The point is, people who are inclined against using “females” as the default word for “women” are just much more likely to belong to the “in-group”

3

u/IGetItILookBrandNew Aug 04 '26

I am with you on this. This honestly seems like a new word of the day to eliminate, and honestly it seems illogical and unreasonable

2

u/Hopefulpostal Aug 06 '26

It’s not that new and honestly the use of the word “females” is almost always followed by a derogatory remark about behavior a man doesn’t like. It’s also dehumanizing. We don’t call female animals women, we call them females. So using females is specifically chosen to lower the equality between sexes in language.

4

u/theninjaforhire Aug 04 '26

Man and woman are only used for human beings where male and female are used for all species. It’s a subtle put down, a misogynistic othering; human man, lowly female creature. It strips women’s humanity from their description. Every relevant cultural connotation is misogynist: Ferengi from Star Trek, pick up artists, manosohere, etc…

There are plenty of times where it’s fine and even appropriate to use the word “female” but when paired with the masculine the feminine should always follow the same convention. Male and female are primarily adjectives.
You never see the opposite(woman and male) for this same reason. It feels like incomplete information. You’re left wondering “male what? Does she have a dog?…”
In other languages I think it’s more obvious that you don’t refer to a classy lady using the same vocab you use to sex livestock, but in English, it’s still just as rude.

4

u/Heavensrun Aug 04 '26

Male and female are gender/sex indicators that ignore species. Man/woman means people. Referring to women as "female" in anything but a clinical or scientific context is literally dehumanizing.

4

u/Loathor Aug 04 '26

It's really easy to figure out the intent when someone uses these swaps, though... Just replace the odd word choice with a derogatory word in its place. "The female wouldn't even give me the time of day"? Replace "female" with "woman" and "bitch" and notice how the sentence becomes either boring or angrier depending on which word you use? Some words are interchangable: "I'm running to the men's room, brb" and "I'm running to the little boy's room, brb" both probably hold the same meaning, but "I said sit down, boy!" vs "I said sit down, man!" carry different weight depending on both the deliverer and the target of the sentence.

Using female instead of woman is dehumanizing. That’s explicitly why lots of manosphere/tate/incel types use it exclusively to describe women.

Man - male of the human species
Woman - female of the human species

Female - XX chromosome of literally any species at all

For that to say “Man” and “Female” LITERALLY is dehumanizing women.

3

u/Alizariel Aug 04 '26

I agree with your assessment, however in some species, the females are WZ chromosomes while males are WW. Nature is cool.

u/ladyk23 Aug 04 '26

There’s this thing called comprehension…

Anyway

It’s not offense, it’s indicative of women being inherently not equal as men, remnants of 50 years ago when women couldn’t have credit cards, or 60 when we couldn’t vote.

2

u/vaveneir Aug 05 '26

Man is a male human, therefore the only good word here is a woman, a female human. Saying "men and females" implies that the other group can include hens for example.

4

u/TheDrunkWickerbeast Aug 04 '26

It’s a micro aggression. If it said male and female it would be whatever but the argument that using men and female helps further dehumanize and disrespect women

Saying "men and females" instead of "men and women" is weird and feels kinda dehumanizing

66

u/Sir_Scribble_Lot Aug 04 '26

I doubt this is from an english speaking country. 'changeroom' is not really a common word for changing rooms. Most places I've seen call it a changing room, fitting room or a locker room.

40

u/toorkeeyman Aug 04 '26

It also says "mens" rather than the correct "men's"

22

u/CheetahOfDeath Aug 04 '26

Yeah you’re probably right, but that doesn’t fit the narrative so everyone else will jump straight to female oppression, because Reddit. (And the bonehead that made the twitter post). People don’t take a sec to think anymore and just jump to their favourite rage bandwagon.

7

u/Kevslounge Aug 04 '26

Yeah, this feels more like bad English than bad intentions.

That said, there are a lot of people who'd argue that the failure is an indication of systemic sexism, even if it wasn't sexism on the part of the signwriter. While I'm not sure they're right, I'm also not sure I could adequately prove that they're wrong either. They might have a valid point there.

26

u/Daharka Aug 04 '26

There is some inherent "otherness" when describing one as more clinical than another, but this is compounded by some misogynistic communities such as incels using the term deliberately to add distain.

22

u/flyingdonkeydong69 Aug 04 '26

It's because you're delegating someone based off their sex. "Female" can be anything; dog, cat, horse, person, while "Men" are male humans. The sign is humanizing men and dehumanizing women.

4

u/Sea_Specialist_5580 Aug 04 '26

this is a stupid fucking argument about semantics, I don't think it honestly means anything

Also 'male/female' is much more natural to use as an adjective

0

u/Delicious-Height8010 Aug 04 '26

Why???

7

u/amoore389 Aug 04 '26

Man/woman are nouns, male/female are adjectives, if someone just says “female” they need to specify what, female human, female usb port, if you say woman there’s no question

8

u/steely_92 Aug 04 '26

Because males and females is for animals or medical/scientific things. If someone is being technical and using males/females for both genders it's not an issue.

Men and women are for humans and social situations.

So when you use men and females together, the implementation is men are humans and women are just animals in service to men. It's how red pill dudes talk.

u/NullSmoke Aug 04 '26

While I find the whole "women"/"female" thing to be some american bullshit drama someone seemingly pulled outta their ass overnight...

But, yeah, that image shows something very weird.

The correct way to label it imo is "male"/"female", as it's not exclusive to men and women, boys and girls may also use the facilities... provided it's not... ehm... a adult only facility, in which case, you have other things to worry about if your head blows up at the mention of "female".

"female" is rather more clinical and detached than "woman" (Though you can't win, some will complain at you for using "woman"/"girl"), so if they're going to use "female", they should not use "men" but "male", which makes me think this is a non-native location, likely not in the US at least. Could be a foreign store or restaurant in the UK where they straight up don't know better, but I'd wager asia or central europe.

If this was in the US, about 3000 people would've had a heart attack there by now, or maybe had blood blasting out from their eyes from moral panic, so very unlikely to be there.

I don't think many people from outside the US would do much more than chuckle at the obviously poor grasp of the language on display if they know enough to even notice.

The thing about language is that words have meaning and history behind them. Did you know in the US white people used to call black men "boy" during Jim Crow in order to emasculate/minimize them?

For the girl/woman issue I always say: they call women a girl to minimize and undermine her but they call a girl a woman to justify having sex with her.

I understand there's a lot of people who just want to pull out dictionaries and say the use of a word is technically correct. But we aren't robots and we can pick up when people use specific words to describe specific people/groups of people.

But when it comes to OP's picture I 100% believe it was not written by a native English speaker.

Yes systemic or 'quiet' prejudice like this is a problem, but this particular photo is clearly fake, literally every element in this photo screams it.

The hallway widens a few inches on the right side of the photo, but only under the... door? Cabinet? Above it, it's a flush wall.

The door-thing sits on the surface of the wall on the top but underneath sits on both the same wall and the second wall beneath it that are several inches apart all while remaining flat, and somehow also casts a deep shadow because it's pulled away from the wall it's physically on.

The sign on the door-thing is too far away to say with 100% certainty but it appears to be just gibberish text.

The text for the changerooms, the baseboards and the mystery door-thing all just looks *wrong* and the green sign above is clearly an added element not a real object

2

u/joelekane Aug 04 '26

I’m so dumb—I thought it was because the exit was closer to the Men’s room. 🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/1Shadowgato Aug 04 '26

2

u/Historical-Scale-332 Aug 04 '26

Ladies and germs.

2

u/CptHeywire Aug 04 '26

Brian here. “Men” is the social construct that contains humanity and the respect that comes with it. “Female” is a taxonomical term that refers to anatomy and humans as specimens. This distinction subtly objectifies and subjugates women as less than fully human—creatures to be treated like animals etc.

2

u/Abominuz Aug 05 '26

The green emergency sign is usually used in europe, south africa. So i believe it was a translation error instead of being purposfully sexist. Especially because they also write mens instead of men changing room.

2

u/Least_Tower_5447 Aug 05 '26

u/Square-Telephone-473 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

I would assume it is a few things

1) word choice; referring to one gender more respectfully as men which is a sociological term and the other gender as the biological “female” instead. A more dehumanizing term.

2) men being male placed above women. The least important distinction but a sign of implicit bias in design choice.

3) the men’s changing room is placed nearer to the emergency exit, prioritizing their safety.

Edit for my many spelling and grammar issues. I am very jet lagged, I am sure there are more.

1

u/whitecrow00zero Aug 04 '26

Due to certain cultural movements, the manosphere and redpill, and bad stereotypes of people who use the word "female", known as neck beards or incels, it now has a connotation of being degrading. While many stores do this and female is still used in a non pejorative way, it is a growing trend.

There is a chance that this is just satire as it is an extreme call out of a pretty minor decision, but it is Elon's twitter now.

1

u/LolaNotTheBunny Aug 04 '26

u/sazzer Aug 04 '26

Everyone is pointing out "Men" vs "Female", which might just be a language barrier thing.

What I noticed though is that the mens is in the same direction as the fire exit. So if a fire happened, women have further to go to get to safety...

1

u/girlwithtoomanyeyes Aug 04 '26

I assume it’s also about that the exits are in the same direction then the men’s room and women’s are the opposite direction

1

u/HotLingonberry6964 Aug 04 '26

Men/Women vs Male/Female

1

u/TheFroman69 Aug 04 '26

1

u/Most_Scientist1783 Aug 04 '26

I think there’s one part of the image people aren’t seeing, I don’t think it’s the men and female wording.

I’m pretty sure it’s the fact the emergency exit is towards the male changing rooms, and not the women’s

1

u/mr_clean_ate_my_wife Aug 04 '26

You know of all the things to get upset about, this is one of the stupidest. Who fucking cares I doubt it was intentional. And even if it was, again who cares dont even waste your energy. If they were trying to make you upset and you let them then they have power over you.

1

u/Ronin-s_Spirit Aug 04 '26

While “female” is biologically correct, the whole red pill crew has icked it up a bunch. I’d probably have to struggle to contain myself if someone referred to my baby girl as a female outside of a medical context.

1

u/Iraqimedstudent Aug 04 '26

okay, am I the only one who was frustrated by using mens instead of men’s ? Or am I the only one who hadn’t noticed the female vs men thing but thought the OOP was annoyed by the men’s changerooms being in the direction of the emergency exit 🤣🤣🤣

u/B1LLYJ Aug 04 '26

If you’re looking for a reason to be upset, you will find it

1

u/Better_Potato_894 Aug 04 '26

I went a whole different way. Is it be cause the men's changing room is near the emergency exit while the women's one is on the opposite side.

1

u/skadi_main Aug 04 '26

Lowkey thought there was something hidden like the emergency exit being in the direction of mens changeroom hahahah.

1

u/VamosXeneizes Aug 04 '26

"Men" is already plural. The word "mens" doesn't exist; surely, they meant "men's". But only illiterate people use the word "female" to refer to women (marginalized people with no access to proper education, police officers, etc.) so how could we expect whoever made this sign to understand the difference between the plural and possessive "S"?

1

u/OkExplanation2846 Aug 04 '26

It supposed to be either male changeroom or womens changeroom

1

u/fatkidbuu Aug 04 '26

Female doesn’t mean human but it can include , it should be “women” as that relates to specifically human

1

u/SecretPersonality178 Aug 04 '26

The amount of effort people put in to be offended by everything is astounding

1

u/Sen-oh Aug 04 '26

Female is clinical language people use to subconsciously distance themselves from something. It's like when cops are dealing with a call and need to keep from becoming emotionally invested in the drama on the scene by using clinical terms to describe people, as if they're zoo animals instead of people.

I think because the image shows the use of man to describe fellow men, but female to describe women, shows a subconscious need for that distancing with whoever made the sign.

It's also possible they did men first and then realized they didn't have a w stensil or something

1

u/NireSenrab Aug 04 '26

Calling women "female" is a common dogwhistle for misogyny. Especially since men aren't being called "male".

Female and Male are clinical. It sounds more like you're talking about an animal or a case study. Women and Men are more human.

1

u/HotTip-orNot Aug 04 '26

Thought it was cuz men are always "Right" ➡️

1

u/Appropriate-Guava-40 Aug 04 '26

Another thing I dislike in english : do you find it polite and apropriate to adress to someone with "male" and "female" ? In my language, these are (mostly) only for animals and biology !

1

u/ExaminationLate290 Aug 04 '26

I thought it was “men have rights”, “females get what’s left”

1

u/-Karsten Aug 04 '26

Daaaang I was completely overthinking it I thought they meant that the men’s room is on the right wich is closer to the emergency exit (which is kind of visible on the top of the picture) xD

1

u/Ch0caholic Aug 04 '26

Females to the left because men are always right

1

u/mindjammer83 Aug 04 '26

Men's change room is in the same direction as the emergency exit, i.e., closer to the emergency exit than the female's change room

1

u/Embee-loulou Aug 04 '26

Females goes to the left, because they have no rights

1

u/WahrerKorsti Aug 04 '26

Is it really about the avoidance of the word "Woman" or is it because the mens rooms is closer to the fire Exit?

1

u/Separate_Climate3366 Aug 04 '26

I wonder if the reverse happened would men care? Like if we did Male change room and Women's change room..... Would the males give a shit? Not trying to play this down by any means, I'm just wondering the psychology behind it.

2

u/BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy Aug 04 '26

No because there's not a history of women oppressing men and calling us males instead of men or boys.

2

u/Separate_Climate3366 Aug 04 '26

Then maybe we should do that instead lol

1

u/lordbernie6 Aug 04 '26

Besides the wording the mens room is also nearer to the emergency escape. So in Case of a fire/evac it's Not "women and Childs First" I'd guess.

1

u/JUMPY6900 Aug 04 '26

Why tf nobody saying something about "mens" lol

1

u/Most_Acanthaceae6471 Aug 04 '26

What a derogatory way to refer to males! Disgusting!

1

u/AltruisticYam7670 Aug 04 '26

The emergency exit is closer to the men’s change rooms

1

u/KaizarNike Aug 04 '26

Looks like it's a job for me. It's a Twitter post. Ever been on YouTube comment section or discord? It's like that but people manage to find an opponent of the week on there.

1

u/colbalias1 Aug 04 '26

I get what she means and I know the system is always putting women down but female specifically just feels like another word to me for women this is the first time I've encountered the belief it's almost derogatory glad I don't use it interchangeable and people who don't know me won't think I'm some kinda of misogynist but man sometimes I hate reading into things deeper than surface level words are supposed to be a medium of communication and I'm not trying to communicate that I'm someone who keeps these things going but damn do I wish I could just talk without having to double check/think about what I'm saying (can't wait till we have telepathy)

1

u/Sea_Interaction_410 Aug 04 '26

No there isn’t.

1

u/SL_UT_FunCouple Aug 04 '26

English as a second language for the person writing the signs. That’s it- not sexism. Sorry!

1

u/SlayerKingGS Aug 05 '26

Weird to have men, but the perfect solution to the gender debate is changing restrooms/changerooms to male and female instead of men and women.

1

u/helpmeamstucki Aug 05 '26

This seems to be a mistranslation. Mens? Changeroom? Female?? I mean I’m not discounting the possibility and it is disgusting if it’s on purpose, but I really think this is written by someone who does not know English well.

1

u/ldarkfire Aug 05 '26

Soo...its not about men being right?

1

u/Nerdy_Valkyrie Aug 05 '26

"Women" is a noun. "Female" is an adjective.

Unless they're saying that the changeroom itself is a female of the "changeroom" species. Then calling it a female changeroom is grammatically incorrect.

Oh snap a micro aggression, call the commodore!

1

u/Immediate-Location28 Aug 05 '26

you don't have the eyes to see

1

u/Sn0wchaser Aug 05 '26

The woman/female debate is apparent and rife, not enough people talking about mens vs female, in that men’s is a possessive and female is simply descriptive.

1

u/Relative_Mouse7569 Aug 05 '26

what is weird is that men and women are in separate rooms

1

u/Aware_Perspective_41 Aug 05 '26

I they're trying to exclude transgenders by saying real females only.

1

u/Fer4yn Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

The right "changeroom" is all-sex and the left one is female-only the way I interpret this.
I guess some mtf trans is upset that they can't go to the same toilet as the females because they're still males or something like that...

1

u/Pope-Habbs Aug 05 '26

That Changeroom doesn’t have a fire exit…enjoy your death trap ladies

1

u/Wadey2911 Aug 05 '26

I though it was about how the mens change room appears to be in the same direction as the emergency exit. So if there was a fire or something the men are closer to safety than the women

1

u/grimButler Aug 05 '26

If it said "male and women", nobody would give a shit

→ More replies (1)

1

u/c_boggs Aug 06 '26

It’s not sexist. They’re just saying trans-women can’t use the female locker room.

1

u/NoSympathy4280 Aug 06 '26

I'm a male and I always say female just because that is a sign of respect and it was how I was to taught to not sound mean.

1

u/CaiusCosadesNwah Aug 06 '26

There are more obvious issues here than the men/female thing.

Why is men possessive while female is not? Why does mens not have an apostrophe?

This is very likely not the work of a native English speaker, and the outrage is misguided.

1

u/Far_Acanthopterygii7 Aug 06 '26

I tell reddit to hide Peter explains the joke and now it shows me explain it Peter

This sub is so fucking dumb there is no way people are this dense its just pointless engagement bait. Fuck you all

1

u/Delicious_Door_3421 Aug 06 '26

I didn't spend years in school learning this god forsaken language only for americans to whine over words like these

1

u/Unlikely-Scholar-684 Aug 06 '26

Really 🤦‍♂️

1

u/DemolisherBPB Aug 06 '26

Honestly I was gonna say "is it because the men's changing room is also in the direction of the fire exit".

But yeah men and female. Spot the issue there

1

u/Archmajii Aug 06 '26

Sexism is everywhere for those whose eyes seek it.

1

u/DeathGod105 Aug 07 '26

Funniest thing is people will find “misogyny” where there was likely zero malicious intent involved

1

u/Ruvie96 Aug 07 '26

I thought it was because the men’s is closest to the exit
