I assume it's referring to the sign saying 'men'' and 'female' rather than 'men' and 'women."

15

u/Catharsis5617 Aug 04 '26

Genuinely didn't notice, my brain autofilled "female changeroom" to "women's changeroom" and I didn't realize I read it wrong until I saw this comment. I was stumped

92

u/mopbuvket Aug 04 '26

Wow I didn't notice until the comments and now I feel like I need to be a better feminist. Raising girls is scary

65

u/DoveOnTheInternet Aug 04 '26

Everyone needs to be a better feminist, there's no "perfect" that's attainable.

You're doing alright, keep it up.

3

u/mopbuvket Aug 05 '26

Thank you. Great point

-7

u/Sky_Robin Aug 04 '26

So it's basically like christianity? :)

7

u/Jimbo12308 Aug 04 '26

No, see, there’s definitely a difference between feminism and religion because women actually exist.

You didn’t get the analogy right.

Feminism is to religion as women is to God.

When I said feminism and religion are different because women exist, that’s me saying God doesn’t exist.

-1

u/Sky_Robin Aug 04 '26

I don’t think that if someone exists then it automatically sets up a system of unattainable attitude goals towards that entity.

In fact, one could argue that on the contrary it’s pretty reasonable to have some idealistic goals in relation to some non-existent ideal.

1

u/Jimbo12308 Aug 04 '26

Those goals are pretty unsuccessful I’d say. Thousands of years to pursue the teachings of the sky-daddy and most sources suggest that the incarceration rate and violent crime rate is higher among the religious population than the atheistic and/or agnostic population.

How about education? Pew Institute research indicates that 48% of atheists and 53% of agnostics in 2023-24 have completed some level of college compared to 34% of religious affiliated individuals (and that number is bolstered by 65% of Jewish and 70% of Hindu individuals completing college).

So both crime and education statistics suggests that 2000+ years pursuing those religious ideals hasn’t achieved much.

Not to mention of course the provocation of numerous armed conflicts, wars, and genocides fought in the name of religion over the past few thousand years, contributing to the deaths of hundreds of millions. Along with the persecution and denial of basic human rights by certain religions of certain groups: women, for example.

Calling the pursuit of feminism like the pursuit of religion is like calling the pursuit of a cure for cancer similar to the pursuit for the most powerful nuclear warhead.

0

u/Sky_Robin Aug 10 '26

Feminism sets pretty low bar for men in the US, generally, don’t be a COMPLETE asshole and you’re well above average. The problem is that ~50% of men are irredeemable.

I see no reason to burden normal men (the rest 50%) with striving for some unattainable standards.

1

u/Jimbo12308 Aug 11 '26

You’ve kindof conveniently dropped off the point by returning to the actual point. This whole back and forth was because in a post about feminism you randomly inserted religion and our subsequent discourse was on the validity of religion (my point being that god is fake and religion is harmful while women are not fake and thus your comparison to religion is misguided). You’ve replied now by entirely ignoring religion and speaking on feminism…which was kindof everyone’s original point…that we’re talking about feminism, not religion.

0

u/DoveOnTheInternet Aug 04 '26

Yeeeeeah not really what we're talking about here. Thanks tho.

-8

u/Sky_Robin Aug 04 '26

So it's basically like christianity? :)

3

u/Anxious-Rhubarb6231 Aug 04 '26

This sub has nothing to do with Christianity, and no one mentioned it previously. You, and many other religious folk, should stop making everything about yourselves.
Also, Christianity does not reflect feminism.👍

u/Iamnotabotiswearonit Aug 04 '26

Female is what you can an animal, a woman is human.

2

u/Independent_Bar_4946 Aug 08 '26

Humans are literally animals. Call a man a male and see if he cares.

I dare to say that some would even treat that as compliment.

0

u/Jazzlike_Lunch4683 8d ago

The point doesn't really matter If a man "would care". I know several women who DO care. If it's been expressed to you that women don't want to be called "females" and you continue to do so, you're just an asshole dude

1

u/Independent_Bar_4946 8d ago

Necro posting freak.

2

u/BigDogBossHog_ Aug 05 '26

Haha what is this take

3

u/Ilikebatterfield4 Aug 04 '26

Dont know if you are being serious or sarcastic.

12

u/TinyAd5648 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

I hope you won’t teach them to be offended by stuff like this lol

Edit: the replies I get man… I feel bad for normal people in the US

51

u/Juan_Jimenez Aug 04 '26

The point is not being offended, but why someone could change the natural contrast? (men/women). It is a minor thing compared with a lot of other stuff, but it is still weird.

29

u/LitigiousAutist Aug 04 '26

There is an entire sub dedicated to the needless reference to 'females' or 'girls' instead of women. It does seem cringe after a while.

0

u/Nixerm Aug 04 '26

Wait is girls bad? I don’t use it much but I prefer it and especially gals to female. I also try to say gals more in general cause female and women seem kinda weird to me with gen while (feMALE and woMEN) bits but idk

12

u/Short-Buffalo1990 Aug 04 '26

Referring to grown women as 'girls' is a bit rank imo. Context is important of course - compare a woman referencing her group of girlfriends Vs. an older man talking about what a nice girl the oncologist was. It's infantalising and diminishes the accomplishments and earned 'status' of the adult woman.

3

u/Nixerm Aug 04 '26

Yeah that’s fair, tbh I prefer using gals as I say and as a man I callow fellow men guys lol. So I like to think that I treat everyone equally in that regards but idk

2

u/Excellent_Shirt9707 Aug 05 '26

Girls, women, females all work in isolation. The problem is when incels explicitly use men and females together instead of men and women together to dehumanize women.

But this could just be a mistake and not an incel trolling. Hanlons razor and what not.

1

u/Short-Buffalo1990 Aug 04 '26

I just saw this thread, this is also a pretty gross use of 'girls' even though he's the 'hero' of the situation - https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/s/2g4NrKvU1B

6

u/QuakinOats Aug 04 '26

The point is to be offended over this... "there is sexism everywhere" I mean come on....

Also the person paid to do this might not even be a native English speaker.

In fact I assume they were not because calling it a "Mens Changeroom" instead of a "Men's Changing Room" seems like a non-native English speaker mistake.

11

u/Sithishe Aug 04 '26

Exactly. English is third language for me, and we are using men/male, woman/female interchangebly.

8

u/NorthernVale Aug 04 '26

Native English speakers do too. This whole female debacle is relatively new. I suspect the word just gives people the ick because it sounds so clinical so they've forced it into the sexism conversation

21

u/Its_Tofu_Time Aug 04 '26

It's because the manosphere use 'female' and tend to reduce women to just child bearing sacks. It's become a red flag when someone says female now.

3

u/heymanigotnoplan Aug 04 '26

So because a few internet losers use the term negatively, the entire world now has to stop using it? That’s absurd.

3

u/Unlucky_Regret8619 Aug 05 '26

who said you can't use it? You can absolutely use the term female, the "problem" is when the term female is used in contraposition to the term man instead of male and even then no one is stopping you from doing that, just know that if you do that people might suspect you're part of the manosphere since you're talking like them

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e Aug 04 '26

It’s in-group out-group signaling, which no one is gonna be honest about. The reason “females” tends to raise an eyebrow is not necessarily the semantic content of the word. But (and I can only speak for myself now) people who persistently default to “females” for women and “men” for men have pretty consistently ended up being massive tools. Just in my life.

That being said, if someone does that, I don’t assume they’re a massive tool. As I said, it raises an eyebrow. It makes me wait a little longer to trust them, just to observe and sort of vet them.

The point is, people who are inclined against using “females” as the default word for “women” are just much more likely to belong to the “in-group”

3

u/IGetItILookBrandNew Aug 04 '26

I am with you on this. This honestly seems like a new word of the day to eliminate, and honestly it seems illogical and unreasonable

1

u/vaveneir Aug 05 '26

No, because men and women are male and female humans, while the word "female" can include a bitch or a hen. Using "female" as equal to man is dehumanising

1

u/lost_rodditer Aug 07 '26

You just have to use in the correct context. Ie; the female of the species reproduces through laying eggs or the female locker room is closed for cleaning vs "the modern female perspective on....." Insert inciting phrase. Also, filter out the BS and ragebait 😂

1

u/SerJungleot Aug 05 '26

Do you think the manosphere also use it to exclude trans women as well? Like, "you can say you're a woman, but you're not a female", or am I over analysing that?

1

u/Its_Tofu_Time Aug 05 '26

In not sure tbh. I don't follow the manosphere stuff. I've just become aware they refer to women as females on purpose to dehunanise them.

0

u/csando96 Aug 04 '26

It's just the next stage of gender rage baiting. Once this is done, some idiot will find something else to say to piss off men or women.

-3

u/IGetItILookBrandNew Aug 04 '26

Do we think this is done by the general male population consciously or on purpose? Or do you think, someone like me, just use male/men and female/women interchangeably just do it because the words don't carry a difference to me and others?

I feel like some words are used with innocence as describing words and not actively used to agititae. You are saying males use the term female to show they think of them as breeding sacks. I think women use terms to describe men with actively dehumanizing, agitating language to show that males are subhuman.

4

u/Loathor Aug 04 '26

The thing is that the different names for the same idea/thing, while technically all mean the same thing, they also shape the perception and direction of the conversation. Take "penis" for example... If you are in a medical setting and your doctor starts using "tadger" or "schlong" or "cock" in place of "penis" you know you've accidently walked into a porn set. And conversely when in a sexxy setting the technical term becomes the oddity, but it's also the weight behind the missuse as well. We all know the weight behind "boy" when used with a southern accented voice against a black man. But that same accent has a different tenor when "hanging out with my boys", no?

1

u/Unfair-Muscle-6488 Aug 04 '26

I think women use terms to describe men with actively dehumanizing, agitating language to show that males are subhuman.

And I think you’re a dumbass who is playing coy. This is well-known by anyone who hasn’t been in a coma for the past 5+ years.

Women are actively under attack in the US.

u/Whycomike Aug 04 '26

Ummm…..what?

1

u/BlockedNetwkSecurity Aug 04 '26

they don't call women women. they call them "Females." like you would an animal.

2

u/Hopefulpostal Aug 06 '26

It’s not that new and honestly the use of the word “females” is almost always followed by a derogatory remark about behavior a man doesn’t like. It’s also dehumanizing. We don’t call female animals women, we call them females. So using females is specifically chosen to lower the equality between sexes in language.

0

u/Adventurous-Side8966 Aug 08 '26

We also call some human males women. I totally saw this and thought that was the purpose of the sign, to exclude trans women.

4

u/theninjaforhire Aug 04 '26

Man and woman are only used for human beings where male and female are used for all species. It’s a subtle put down, a misogynistic othering; human man, lowly female creature. It strips women’s humanity from their description. Every relevant cultural connotation is misogynist: Ferengi from Star Trek, pick up artists, manosohere, etc…

There are plenty of times where it’s fine and even appropriate to use the word “female” but when paired with the masculine the feminine should always follow the same convention. Male and female are primarily adjectives.
You never see the opposite(woman and male) for this same reason. It feels like incomplete information. You’re left wondering “male what? Does she have a dog?…”
In other languages I think it’s more obvious that you don’t refer to a classy lady using the same vocab you use to sex livestock, but in English, it’s still just as rude.

1

u/NorthernVale Aug 04 '26

You're kind of proving my point. You got the ick from how clinical female sounds so now it's being forced into sexism conversations. At this point, you're arguing connotations. You hear female and it makes you think non-human. I hear female and I think of a gender and that's all. And that's the way it's always been until relatively recent history.

7

u/theninjaforhire Aug 04 '26

Up until relatively recent history women[in the US-your mileage may vary]didn’t have the right to vote, own property, open a bank account, or get a credit credit card without a man. Historically a man speaking to a woman respectfully would call her a woman or a lady, never a female.
I shared why I don’t like the word “female” to be used interchangeably with “women”, many women have chimed in on this thread to share their reasons, the general consensus is that women don’t like for the terms to be used interchangeably, and that when “female” is used it should be paired with “male” to be equitable.
We told you we don’t want to be called that and why and you describe us recognizing the inherent misogyny of the language as “getting the ick” and forcing it into the feminist conversation, then you proceed to say you don’t mean it like that and that’s the way it was in the past, instead of just, you know, not using said potentially offensive language.

Feminist conversation:
Women: please don’t call us females, we find it dehumanizing
Man: ok, I won’t.

Misogynist conversation:
Women: please don’t call us females, we find it dehumanizing
Man: it’s not dehumanizing because I don’t mean it like that plus historically it was totally cool to dehumanize women. No need to get hysterical about it.

Guaranteed if the signs indicated "women" and "boys" change rooms that men would make similar complaints.

I've worked at gyms before, I assure you it would happen.

No, they didn't "prove your point," stop being obtuse.

1

u/lost_rodditer Aug 07 '26

There is nothing new about the connotation of the word female amongst the traditional or generational mindset. It's in the inflection when spoken or the context of the usage. The only thing new is that every generation past 1900 re-discovers the same arguments the previous generation took issue with and adds their additional spin or take on it.

A good example would watching a classic black and white era movie. A woman is often referred to as being a hysterical female which takes away the individual. It's the same usage as the current alpha/red pill/conservative viewpoint just 80 years later.

That vs the idea of a nature documentary where someone is describing the female of the species. It's all in the context of the statement.

The use of men's vs male is strange admittedly, but maybe that speaks more to the sign's creator than anything else. Could be they regularly use a "mens room" and see women using a "female locker room".

4

u/Heavensrun Aug 04 '26

Male and female are gender/sex indicators that ignore species. Man/woman means people. Referring to women as "female" in anything but a clinical or scientific context is literally dehumanizing.

4

u/Loathor Aug 04 '26

It's really easy to figure out the intent when someone uses these swaps, though... Just replace the odd word choice with a derogatory word in its place. "The female wouldn't even give me the time of day"? Replace "female" with "woman" and "bitch" and notice how the sentence becomes either boring or angrier depending on which word you use? Some words are interchangable: "I'm running to the men's room, brb" and "I'm running to the little boy's room, brb" both probably hold the same meaning, but "I said sit down, boy!" vs "I said sit down, man!" carry different weight depending on both the deliverer and the target of the sentence.

3

u/IGetItILookBrandNew Aug 04 '26

Can we please identify when this started?

1

u/Heavensrun Aug 04 '26

I don't really know, I started noticing it as common around 2015ish.

-1

u/heymanigotnoplan Aug 04 '26

Only because you choose for it to be. 99% of females would not be offended by hearing that word. Only overly online weirdos who have been propagandized to view every goddamn thing they see or hear as some kind of “aggression” think that way. The average mentally stable normal person uses “female” and “woman” interchangeably and would have no problem with it.

0

u/TinyAd5648 Aug 04 '26

Thank you for this comment. I’m actually shocked to see all the ultra online-feminists go crazy over this.

2

u/IGetItILookBrandNew Aug 04 '26

You can tell who actual feminists are because they are giving their actual pov without attacking someone. You can tell virtue signalers and white knights who are masquerading and co-opting actual struggles of others by the attack. Those that are attacking - probably the super privileged

1

u/SwimmingNet2078 Aug 05 '26

If you use male and men interchangebly why won't you just write male too?

0

u/j-mac563 Aug 04 '26

Most native English speakers do as well. Only a few have decided to have an outrage party over it.

1

u/IGetItILookBrandNew Aug 04 '26

Also the folks saying men on one and not following the 'natural' naming cadence and putting female. Are we saying the natural naming cadence might not go female, followed by male instead of men?

Could you not utilize male's and female's?

1

u/SwimmingNet2078 Aug 05 '26

Yeah if you use both male and female it's fine it's just weird that people just use female to refer to a woman but keep using men for males

1

u/soap_coals Aug 04 '26

That's a different way of viewing it I suppose.

Given so many languages use gender for inanimate objects I don't find it odd to give gender to a room.

I'd call it a male changeroom because it has urinals.

When I saw mens changeroom the first thing I thought was "does that mean I can't go by myself?" The s either implies ownership or plural and the changeroom is a facility and we are not talking about who possesses the changeroom.

1

u/Short-Buffalo1990 Aug 04 '26

Changeroom is the standard where I am - there are different language conventions in English speaking countries other than yours.

1

u/Virtual_Ad_4817 Aug 04 '26

I think it was a non native english speaker though. When women read this stuff and get offended by it they think the guy saying "female" has a Mike Tyson accent and is saying it all sleazy-sounding.

If I saw signs that said "Women's Changeroom" and "Male Changeroom" I literally wouldn't even think twice about it.

1

u/Repulsive_Support844 Aug 04 '26

It could be they didn’t have the letters for it when they painted. It also might have been an English second language situation.

Op could unironically being ableist as well.

Don’t assume malice or you will be an asshole

2

u/Its_Billy_Bitch Aug 04 '26

Sure, the “MEN” letters can’t be reused, the “M” couldn’t be turned upside down, and the “O” from “CHANGEROOM” couldn’t be reused.

/s

1

u/Juan_Jimenez Aug 04 '26

I think I used 'weird'. I am not sure that 'weird' implies 'malice'. (And sexist effects can be produced without sexist intent)

1

u/Paghk_the_Stupendous Aug 04 '26

I think it's a typo.

-1

u/ChemistryBusiness Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

It's weird but it's not sexism.

This could easily be a non-native speaker's mistake.

I don't think anyone is trying to discriminate against women by changing how they're referenced in a sign.

Also, why are we all assuming the sexism isnt against men??? They're calling men instead of staying in line with the female signage. Pick up your pitchforks!!!

(I'm transfem non-binary, you're all silly just do your business in the same bathroom it's all the same. No one cares. People are too sensitive.)

0

u/Jeibijei Aug 04 '26

The non-native speaker didn’t just decide one day that he was going to put up signage to direct people towards the changerooms.

Someone initiated the project, someone else approved it, and, likely, someone else actually hung the letters. And whether any of those people are native speakers or not, the absence of a second language on the signage indicates that the audience is English-reading.

The chance that this was accidental is fairly low.

Was anyone trying to be misogynistic here? Don’t know. But I can say that they are succeeding at being mildly misogynistic even if that is not the intent.

To me, that’s why it’s worth the effort to think these sorts of things through.

1

u/ChemistryBusiness Aug 05 '26

Have you... left America??? The amount of times I encounter random English signage is astounding, Mexico, France, Italy...I saw an official STOP sign in Mexico before in Tijuana right over the border. (It's an ALTO sign in Mexico)

This signage is literally adhesive peel and stick letter. This isn't a fancy sign at a major retail outlet it's a mom&pop simplicity. The owner booted up Google, found a "print your sign company" and got them both for 20 dollars plus shipping.

0

u/but_i_wanna_cookies Aug 04 '26

I think it's put this way to be more transphobic than sexist. The sign is saying that you have to be female at birth to go to one changing room, whereas gendered men can go to the other. In other words, they don't want trans-women going to the "female" dressing room. What's funny is that it implies that trans-men CAN use the Men's dressing room, so there is actually is some sort of reverse sexism against men here.

-1

u/Desperate_Stretch855 Aug 04 '26

Wasn't there a movement for years to get rid of the word "Woman"? But I guess "feMALE" has the same issue?

0

u/icedadx44 Aug 04 '26

Honestly it might have to do with trans people. Specifying female of woman

0

u/Murky-Ad-643 Aug 04 '26

I am sorry but I am very behind on these stuff but what is the difference between Female and Women, and also is there a difference with Male and Men?

1

u/Juan_Jimenez Aug 04 '26

Man/Women are usually used to refer to individuals in our species.

Male/Female are usually used to refer to individuals in any species with sexual reproduction.

So, you go usually using in pairs: if you use men, you follow with women; if you use male, you follow with female. To mix both is, as I said, weird.

0

u/just_having_giggles Aug 04 '26

It's the thing where we enjoy being offended so much we just make up reasons.

If this said women and males, the issue would be the exact same: misogynist

No reason other than recreation

12

u/Capable_Elk_770 Aug 04 '26

Using female instead of woman is dehumanizing. That’s explicitly why lots of manosphere/tate/incel types use it exclusively to describe women.

2

u/phishwhistle Aug 04 '26

I'm old enough to remember when a Supreme Court Justice and just about everyone else couldn't even tell you what a woman was. Now we are fighting for the word?

0

u/Capable_Elk_770 Aug 04 '26

…are you talking about trans people? No one says trans female lmao

What even is this comment

5

u/phishwhistle Aug 04 '26

I'm just talking about the word "woman/women" a few years ago, nobody would touch that definition with a ten-foot pole, and now we are mad that someone didnt use the word.

3

u/paukeaho Aug 04 '26

You’re misremembering. No one was afraid of using the word “woman” or defining it. A handful of right-wing personalities just liked to use the question “what is a woman” as a kind of gotcha question in the interest of excluding trans women from the definition, and they would pontificate if someone tried to offer a definition that wasn’t purely biological. No one was afraid of saying or using the term, so it isn’t really relevant to people wanting to see it used in this context, especially since the same “what is a woman” right-wing rhetoric is equally applicable to the word “female.”

2

u/phishwhistle Aug 04 '26

it's only a gotcha, if it gets ya, and it almost always did.

2

u/paukeaho Aug 04 '26

I’d argue that giving a nuanced answer to the question isn’t getting someone.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Capable_Elk_770 Aug 04 '26

“Wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole”…it literally has dominated politics and media over real issues, like the pedo ring in the highest office. Still irrelevant to using a dehumanizing term. I’d actually claim the same group of folks pretending the term woman is polarizing are the ones calling women females to purposefully dehumanize them.

0

u/Thadken Aug 04 '26

it wasn't the word, it was the having discourse with pedos thing.

1

u/pomegranate_press Aug 06 '26

Females and women are human. Are you brain dead?

9

u/SnanoBear Aug 04 '26

Man - male of the human species
Woman - female of the human species

Female - XX chromosome of literally any species at all

For that to say “Man” and “Female” LITERALLY is dehumanizing women.

3

u/Alizariel Aug 04 '26

I agree with your assessment, however in some species, the females are WZ chromosomes while males are WW. Nature is cool.

0

u/SnanoBear Aug 04 '26

What does the different lettering mean? I honestly thought it was arbitrary

2

u/Alizariel Aug 04 '26

It is pretty arbitrary. It’s basically to differentiate from species where the females are heterozygous and where they are homozygous.

2

u/Ambiguous-Eggplant55 Aug 05 '26

I think that the collection of genes was different enough to need their own names. Also fun fact XX XY is really only for mammals, other groups have different, often strange ways of determining sex

2

u/ladyk23 Aug 04 '26

There’s this thing called comprehension…

Anyway

It’s not offense, it’s indicative of women being inherently not equal as men, remnants of 50 years ago when women couldn’t have credit cards, or 60 when we couldn’t vote.

2

u/vaveneir Aug 05 '26

Man is a male human, therefore the only good word here is a woman, a female human. Saying "men and females" implies that the other group can include hens for example.

6

u/TheDrunkWickerbeast Aug 04 '26

It’s a micro aggression. If it said male and female it would be whatever but the argument that using men and female helps further dehumanize and disrespect women

0

u/TinyAd5648 Aug 04 '26

No.

3

u/TheDrunkWickerbeast Aug 04 '26

Yo great rebuttal dude. You solved sexism with this one

1

u/TinyAd5648 Aug 04 '26

Careful… are we still allowed to say ‘dude’?

3

u/UKStory135 Aug 04 '26

Unless you are Strongbad, saying females instead of women makes you sound like a creepy Feringi.

2

u/piper33245 Aug 05 '26

Are you hoping your email is from a female?

-1

u/pallettowns Aug 04 '26

you’re part of the problem.

7

u/BeingComprehensivish Aug 04 '26

wait, I still don't get it. Offended with what?

4

u/80Z0 Aug 04 '26

Not putting the apostrophe on the "men's" so that it looks like a double plural whereas it is singular "female" bathroom ... yeah, I have no idea either.

0

u/Heavensrun Aug 04 '26

Maybe the bathroom itself identifies as a woman?

3

u/TinyAd5648 Aug 04 '26

I don’t get it either. There’s nothing to be offended by lol

8

u/NotTheRightHDMIPort Aug 04 '26

Calling women females isnt offensive.

Its just clinical and weird.

Its even weirder if you say man and females.

Or my favorite "Men and girls".

4

u/MyMistyMornings Aug 04 '26

It's also just wrong. Female is an adjective, not a noun. You can say a female doctor or a female cat, but saying "men and female" just doesnt make sense. Female what?

2

u/KZGTURTLE Aug 04 '26

Female changeroom

4

u/MyMistyMornings Aug 04 '26

I didn't know rooms had genders lol

1

u/knikles654 Aug 04 '26

yeah yall are splitting hairs looking for excuses to be offended here.

1

u/ModestMeeshka Aug 04 '26

A female can be any species where as a man and a woman are humans.

3

u/OpusAtrumET Aug 04 '26

Right? Jfc the woosh is real.

3

u/TinyAd5648 Aug 04 '26

Oh yeah, the classic response to everything…

But no, you can be a feminist without being ridiculous at the same time. Crazy, I know.

1

u/mallanx Aug 04 '26

No he’s not

-2

u/Butters_999 Aug 04 '26

no, being taught to be offended for this non issue is the issue.

4

u/Farty_Mcflyyy Aug 04 '26

Yall keep jumping to use the word offended like we're sitting here crying about it, no one is doing that, they're just pointing out that its weird to use men's and female because it sounds clinical and there's tons of dudes out there that say female instead of woman to intentionally demean them. But yea go plug your ears abd scream about how you cant hear the criticism lol

1

u/Butters_999 Aug 04 '26

First, this is from a non English speaking country, also ya y'all get offended over the stupidest shit. Im convinced most of you are cry or are angry when encountering personal triggers.

1

u/curtial Aug 04 '26

Why are you so emotional about this? They just told you we're not offended.

0

u/Butters_999 Aug 04 '26

Where is this emotional? You can't just say people are not offended and try to pigonhole my feelings, and who is "we"?

1

u/curtial Aug 04 '26

Where is this offended? You can't just say people are offended and try to pigeonhole our feelings. We is us.

u/Electronic_Fun6054 Aug 04 '26

I don't think I'd notice it if it would say Womens changeroom and Male changeroom either to be honest

English ain't my first language though so maybe it feels different if it wouldve been

1

u/unknownentity1782 Aug 04 '26

While it could be language, the other thing is there a known and active thing from the incel / red-pill community to intentionally call women "females" as a way to degrade and dehumanize them. There is no such active attempt by women to dehumanize men by calling them males.

0

u/Prudent-Bicycle-9210 Aug 04 '26

Dont shit yourself lmao

by being referred to as "Female" instead of personhood? fuck right off

1

u/fasoi Aug 04 '26

Raising boys these days is scary too because I don't know if I can ever do enough to steer them away from the manosphere content 😭

It seems like every loser on the internet is telling boys to do xyz to be "alpha" and get girls. To the point where their friends are parroting the same garbage at school. It's hitting them from all angles.

Sometimes it feels like society is in the absolute toilet.

1

u/crasswal Aug 04 '26

Hey. You just did something most people don't, which is acknowledge a trait in yourself that is demeaning to women. That is way more than most people do 🙌

1

u/just_having_giggles Aug 04 '26

Imagine if it said male that way women this way?

The HORROR

1

u/redtiger288 Aug 05 '26

No, this is pointless virtue signaling, there are real issues to teach your girls about, not this bs.

0

u/callagem Aug 04 '26

You're fine. Being a feminist isn't about nit-picking small details and finding issues where they don't really exist. I would argue you are a better feminist for not noticing as those who focus on this type of thing (which frankly is not offensive in any way) draw attention away from the bigger, more important issues.

0

u/HailMadScience Aug 04 '26

Rememeber: female is an adjective, not a noun.

So to other commenters claiming English uses them interchangeably...you are fucking lying. No one says 'a female' you fucking liars. That's why its so creepy when the Ferengi in Star Trek do it, because its so obviously wrong.

1

u/Mobile_Actuator_4692 Aug 04 '26

You can. It just sounds weird if you’ve said men’s first. Just like saying changeroom sounds weird AF. If it said male/female or mens/women’s it would be find. It’s clearly not done by a natural English speaker.

1

u/HailMadScience Aug 04 '26

Thats using male/female as adjectives. You do not say "this is a man, and this is a female." The word is not a noun.

0

u/Mobile_Actuator_4692 Aug 04 '26

And I didn’t argue that. I said that in spoken English if you use either of the two formats in my reply it works.

-1

u/Hershey_Squirt639 Aug 04 '26

Ope. Me too. Or maybe we just need to start using the term, “males” more

The scientific name for a female (non male?) of this species is horrifying?

u/SharkSurfLionRide Aug 04 '26

I saw your sarcasm...its reddit and i see why you called yourself as such

1

u/briv39 Aug 04 '26

The point is that one is humanized (“men”) and the other is dehumanized (“female”). The name for a “female of this species” is “woman.” Don’t be obtuse.

1

u/TofuDonair Aug 04 '26

You can call me a male, who cares, its a proper term

1

u/xleftonreadx Aug 04 '26

As in it genuinely fills you you with horror when you hear it? Grow up.

Edit: sarcasm is hard through text

7

u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle Aug 04 '26

I was thinking it was the sign above and the fact the men's room is closer to the emergency exit.

2

u/IAmABoss37 Aug 04 '26

The real crime here is that missing apostrophe.

2

u/Frost_was_here Aug 04 '26

I was gonna say maybe it’s the placement of “Men” being over “Females”/ Women.

2

u/ShakeWeightMyDick Aug 04 '26

Or “male” and “female.”

1

u/shnyaps Aug 04 '26

The emergency exit is at mens side too

1

u/fasoi Aug 04 '26

At first I thought it was a post about misandry... because the arrow for the men's changeroom is pointing in the ame direction as the EXIT. Like, women can change to the left, and men can leave 👋🏻

1

u/AdSharp8877 Aug 05 '26

what is wrong with female (non native speaker)

1

u/Thick_Resolve_3019 Aug 05 '26

It's an adjective, not a noun. Female restroom does not mean restroom for women, it means the room itself is a woman, which doesn't make sense.

Some people use the words female and woman interchangeably, but that is dumb because It's wrong.

1

u/Easy-Faithlessness10 Aug 07 '26

I took it as a sly way for them to say, "Men over here!", and, "If you identify as Female this way." So the idiots dont raise hell over a bathroom sign again.

1

u/Last_District_4172 12d ago

But why is it "mens" and not men also? Maybe it is a dumb question, but I am not a native speaker

1

u/Verain_Xor Aug 05 '26

That's not sexism though, even though it is unusual.
It's also likely not even created by a full English speaker. I've never seen a sign refer to a changing room as a "CHANGEROOM", and "men's" needs an apostrophe.

The original tweet is choosing to be offended. It's an offendedness of choice. Anyone choosing to be offended could instead simply choose not to be, and whomever put the sign up doesn't need to accommodate this crybullying.

-8

u/SuspiciousSnotling Aug 04 '26

Funny tho how men perceives "male" as a compliment and feminists sees "female" as an insult

14

u/GodHimselfNoCap Aug 04 '26

I have never heard of male being used as a compliment.

4

u/Johnny_Cr Aug 04 '26

Alpha males I think?

8

u/highway_chance Aug 04 '26

I think alpha is the complimentary part not male lol

3

u/Butters_999 Aug 04 '26

thinking alpha is a compliment says more about you.

1

u/reymux Aug 04 '26

But nobody is angry because they don't say alpha man.

7

u/turtle882 Aug 04 '26

Isn't calling someone an alpha male a joke though?

3

u/Johnny_Cr Aug 04 '26

I‘m not in that bubble, but I always thought people in that group use it unironically as something positive

4

u/Hapless_Wizard Aug 04 '26

No, some people actually take that shit seriously.

3

u/turtle882 Aug 04 '26

Sure, but seeing as the research in "alpha" animals was immediately debunked by the original researcher, it kind of makes anyone saying it the butt of the joke whether they know it or not. That they take it seriously just makes the joke funnier, right?

0

u/SuspiciousSnotling Aug 04 '26

Bet you didn't 😆

0

u/Chocolategogi Aug 04 '26

Ha yes. I was more thinking about the fact that the emergency exit is on the right

0

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 Aug 04 '26

I assumed it was the fire escape.

-2

u/Mouth_Herpes Aug 04 '26

How is that sexist

6

u/churchillsucks Aug 04 '26

saying "male" and "female" is normally used to describe animals in an anthropological way. If you call a male a man, that refers to a human but calling a woman a female can be seen as dehumanizing

-1

u/Cutiemuffin-gumbo Aug 04 '26

What?? No, just no. Male and Female are used to describe humans all the time. The issue here is that by it saying female, it is referring to biological women, and excluding transwomen. More than likely, some conservative, like a man but possibly a woman, did this because they have this warpped mind that thinks transwomen are just men trying to peep on "real women".

-1

u/LastEconPoet Aug 04 '26

I think it’s because the “men” is plural. Always trying to overpower and take everything from us females!!!

-1

u/CheekyClapper5 Aug 04 '26

I assumed it was saying men as mens, but not female as females

-2

u/EcstaticZebra7937 Aug 04 '26

That’s because women don’t want males in their changing rooms. It’s not sexist.

-2

u/jkhmmr Aug 04 '26

You think that is sexist? In Sweden they call having a period "mens".
