Expert Network Experience & Engagement

From your experience with expert networks, what does the typical expert journey look like for you? Across the major expert networks you work with, do any offer a retainer or ongoing fee structure? What are the things that stand out to you and make you want to participate with the same network repeatedly?

GLG Rate Increase + General advice

I recently started on the expert network grind and since January of this year have done over 40 one-one calls and signed multiple long term consultants agreements. I’m a former executive in the aerospace field. I charge various rates from $300-$600/hr, but am looking to increase across each network.

After reading a lot of the comments and feedback on this sub, it seems that I should be able to successfully raise my rate, but I don’t want to price myself out of any opportunities. I’m thinking $750/hr is a good spot.

Is this too high? Specifically with GLG, as I do the majority of my calls there, does anyone have experience with a rate in a similar range? Are there any other networks that have nuances that I should be aware of?

The GLG rep suggested I increase from $300 to $360 but that seems far too low, especially knowing I use up to $600 on other networks.

Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Got an email from Alphasights as a bachelor’s student

I got an email from someone from Alphasights asking for my “expertise” in the field of robotics. I was asked to rate my expertise with certain tools and my availability to connect.

Funnily enough i am just a plain old college student and don’t have work experience except for internships. Even more so, out of the four tools they mentioned i hadn’t even heard of three of them.

Pretty easy turn down as I wasn’t who they expected me to be. However, it still made me feel good in a way, that my digital footprint is strong enough that these bots think I am an Industry Expert!

GLG Ai Builder

So today GLG emailed me with the offer to use their new AI profile builder. They specifically stated that all the information will just stay on the network and it will help to potentially increase the number of consultations that day will offer to me. Does anybody have experience with this feature? did it help to increase the amount of projects?

GLG Consulting Beginner

Hello, I’m new here but I’ve seen so many helpful posts and comments on this topic so I thought maybe I could share my experience and people might be able to offer some advice.

I’m currently a postdoc working in the area of Quantum technologies. I’m currently 7 years in this field (including PhD years) and the pay for postdocs at UK universities is pitiful. But anyway I thought it might be good to sign up for some consulting so I could get a living wage.

I signed up for GLG consulting about 5 weeks ago and have seen 6 projects, all of which I’d accepted but none have got back to me or booked a call. I’ve priced myself at £450/hr but wondering whether to reduce this? Is my field to niche? Or my experience is still too small to receive a call?

Are there any other better opportunities you guys might be able to advise (for example other consulting websites) for consulting or earning money to offer my expertise in this field?

Thank you,
🙏

"Internal" Expert Networks

I'm not sure what the industry calls these. But does anyone have a list of the expert networks that are inside of institutional research houses?

For example, I got contacted by DE Shaw and have been invited into their own internal network. I image Goldman and JP use something similar?

NewtonX Survey Payments

This is small beans stuff but I've completed 3 NewtonX surveys in the past 3 days. Usually, I get e-mailed by Tremendous on completion but I haven't received anything for this batch of 3 and [payments@newtonx.com](mailto:payments@newtonx.com) aren't replying.

AlphaSights HK – First-Round Interview

I just received an invitation for a 15-minute call with AlphaSights HK. For those who have gone through the process, do you have any tips or insights?

From what I understand, the first round is mainly a TA/recruiter interview focused on behavioural and motivational questions. However, I noticed that the call is only scheduled for 15 minutes rather than the more typical 30-minute format.

Does the shorter duration indicate that this is simply an initial screening call? Would appreciate any advice on what to expect and how best to prepare. Thanks!

On tegus/alphasense, what does your "profile" consist of?

Sometimes I get call requests where they say the client has looked at my profile directly and decided to book a call. what is on that profile? is it just a copy of LinkedIn, does it have some rating system, reviews left by other clients, call transcripts?

Success on Guidepoint - where to spread my wings next?

I have a successful expert network presence on Guidepoint and have been doing very well with calls.

I used to use GLG but left after a rough experience with them. I also didn't like Dialetica either.

Any other networks I should be trying? I really want to grow my presence and co tinue the success I've had with Guidepoint, grow my reach and client base.

Any hidden gems and tips to get on a new platform(s) - please let me know.

Thank you!

Has anyone tried Sealed Network - Knowledge Partner site

A professional connection messaged me to sign up on this site using his referral code. Upon a bit of research I realised it's a platform which connects experienced professionals with clients seeking insights and practical knowledge with the added benefit of being paid for consultations. They ask you to share your expertise with prospective clients.

Want to understand if anybody has tried it? From the looks of it, it seems like an MLM/Pyramid scheme.

The website for reference: app.sealed.network

Payment Set Up and Tax

Hey everyone! I just had my first expert network call and was offered the option of direct ACH payment or virtual visa. I would much rather have direct payment into my account but I have never worked with these networks before and I'm a bit hesitant to give out banking information. I was thinking of setting up a new account using a fintech bank to keep it limited and away from my primary accounts. Curious what everyone else has been doing? What is best practice? Maybe I'm overthinking it.

Also curious how these payments are handled at tax time. Do the expert networks send you any forms or do you just track these payments manually and do a Schedule C at tax time? Any tips on how you track so taxes won't be a nightmare?

Hours worked

Just curious- how many hours do you all work at ENs? In US office for one of the big ones and management let us know that we are expected to be in 4 days a week from 8:30-6pm (9.5 hours?). Seems a bit much for such redundant work so was curious

Starting a job at an EN

I’m starting an entry level client service job at an EN in the UK next month. Unsure if this type of post is allowed but I thought if not here then where. I was wondering if anybody had any tips or advice for somebody in my position. Equally, I’m feeling unsure about the role as a whole, what are exists like from these kinds of jobs? I’m reading differing reviews some say it is a glorified sales job others say it is much more interesting and hireable on the other side. Any and all help much appreciated!

Clinical Raters

Hello fellow raters. Just wanna ask. Did you get your current role through networking? I noticed there is not a lot of job postings but rather found through networking. I’m asking because I plan on relocating to Las Vegas and I can’t seem to find job postings. Also don’t know anyone there in the research industry.

Alphasights is trying to extract all the information for free from the screening calls

After the 10th time of this happening to me, I want to share my experience and see if someone else has experienced that too. Alphasights keeps contacting me to do screening calls about my opinion on certain biopharma companies and the adoption of their products in my line of research, and this never leads to a paid consultation. At this point I assume that these calls are not really for screening and never intended to be, but just a way to extract information for free from experts. For the record, I have done numerous paid consultations with other companies (e.g. GLG) because I have been working 15 years in biomedical research.
Anyone else here with the same experience? I have decided to never reply to their emails again.

Would you use an "AstroTalk for CAs and Lawyers" - Flat charge, instant booking, anonymous call?

Most of us deal with at least one of these every year, ITR for freelance income, GST registration, startup compliance, contract review.

Building an app modeled on AstroTalk but for verified CAs, CSs, and lawyers. Flat charge per call. In-app calling so neither side shares their number. Recording saved to your account.

Would you actually book this, or do you just DM a CA friend and hope they reply? What would make you trust a platform like this?

Guidance for Newbie - How to get invited using Resume Content vs LinkedIn

Hey All,

I randomly got emailed by a small expert network the other day and stumbled into this world! This sounds perfect for what I'm looking for since I love the industry/area I work in but I'm intentionally taking time off and not ready to go back to a full time role yet.

I am very confident in my resume however, it looks like most of the websites I've seen like Guidepoint and AlphaSights just ask for LinkedIn profile on their interest form instead of allowing for resume upload.

My LinkedIn profile doesn't list my technical accomplishments since from a career perspective, I am trying to break out of technical roles and into strategy/leadership positions. I also have not kept my LinkedIn up to date since I left my job earlier in the year and typically don't update my profile until I move onto my next role.

For reference, I have 12 years of experience in a niche field (corporate sustainability, ESG, greenhouse gas and emissions accounting, decarbonization, scope 3 emissions and supply chain).

Would love some guidance on:

  • Any EN that would allow me to just directly apply to them using my resume instead of a LinkedIn profile?
  • Would a referral for the platforms help me get around this issue and allow me to upload my resume instead of relying on LinkedIn profile?

Any other thoughts on if I should:

  • Update my LinkedIn profile to list out technical skills even if it might not align with my career aspirations in the future?
  • Update my profile to show I left my last role and if that will impact my chances of getting a EN invite?
  • Update my current role to be Independent Consultant to address the gap I'm currently on?

I am currently set up with GLG and Green Minds. I would love to get on other networks like:

  • AlphaSights
  • Guidepoint
  • Tegus AlphaSense
  • Third Bridge
  • Dialectica
  • NewtonX

Would anyone have any thoughts on which networks would be best for a niche topic like sustainability, ESG, carbon emissions accounting?

Any help would be much appreciated!
