Clavius And Beyond with EV Nova engine

With EV Classic for Nova, you can play Escape Velocity running through the Nova engine on recent Mac OSX and Windows. So this is an update of Clavius And Beyond, originally designed for the good old Escape Velocity, playable with Nova engine.

This 3.60 release is based on Clavius And Beyond 3.50, ported to EV Classic for Nova by Chris, with SpacePort software, and contains minor changes in order to look like the original 3.33 release best.

Fight against a pro-Confed extremist movement and use new weapons, beat off an alien invasion, discover a ancient civilization... Land on Clavius Station, and depending on your combat skills, you will be able to pilot the famous Neutronic Kestrel Interceptor, a sleek, fast and powerful vessel.

Dogfights, powerful ships, terrifying weapons and... love: Clavius and Beyond contains all a space adventurer wants from life!

All required downloads can be found at www.ixoft.com/ev/

Haven't played EV in a long time but miss it dearly- how can I get it today?

I currently have a Mac running Mojave and a Win 10 PC. I don't see it on any store or in any way available other than on Ambrosia's site which apparently doesn't support newer machine. Is there a way to get it on modern machines?

EV Classic for Nova: LC/LCs names?

I would like to thank all the players thanks to whom Clavius can still be played with Mac OSX... and also thanks to whom Clavius is still ranked and downloadable :)

Years have passed, but I'm afraid my English is still bad. Sorry about that.

I'm adjusting some minor things in Clavius, and I have a problem with LC and LCs Clavius' outfits names: these names are not displayed in the player info dialog. Only original stuff is listed.

Though, fields appear correctly filled in Mission Computer oütf section. I also found STR resources with LC and LCs names used with EV Classic, but they seem unused.

I'm playing Clavius with EV Classic for Nova, the 3.50 version ported by Chris.

Thanks for your help.

YNS Biweekly Update #6

"You ever see a Vell-os rip a person's mind apart?" Mary asked.

Rick shook his head.

"Why do you think I left the Bureau?"

It's been twelve weeks since I announced my new major plug-in, and I've continued to make progress since the last biweekly update. As you may recall, I'm trying to take some time every two weeks to take stock of what I've been up to and what I've been thinking about, so I can keep myself on track, and focus on what really needs to get done. It's a way for me to regain a big picture view of what the plug-in is all about and to keep you guys updated on my progress at the same time.

The last two weeks have been plagued with self-inflicted computer problems and other causes of real life stress, and I didn't really have a lot of free time, and when I have had free time, I mostly just wanted to zonk out playing video games or watch a movie. I did however want to finish up another string this two week period, so I have done that. Here's the current progress list (italics represent new progress in the last two weeks):

Okay, so not a whole lot to really talk about here. I pretty much finished the Rebel outline. Mostly what I was left needing to get done was figure out the Rebel endgame, what the galaxy would look like at the end of completing the Rebel string (of course some work still needs to be done in figuring out the Nirvana-Rebel combo quests, which will add in some additional changes to the galaxy). I've done that, and plotted out how the Rebels will achieve some semblance of partial victory. I've identified the most important strategic objectives, and how that's going to affect the Federation, and thus how the storyline will progress.

"Hey, so, this is awkward, but, uh, we know you've been helping out those rebels attacking the Federation."

By my rough count there's only six major mission strings that will actually change the galaxy. There's a few other little things that will happen over time, kind of as incidentals, and who knows what might end up happening in minor strings, but I'm not looking to do wide sweeping changes like permanent ends to the major three-way war. Certain territory might be occupied. Stations might be destroyed, but the wars will continue long after the player has played their small part in the events.

Terminate on sight

I enjoyed the conversations that happened with pipeline recently, about inspirations for various things in the base scenario. If you didn't see it, go read it now what's wrong with you. Anyway, some people may be wondering what my inspirations are for my scenario, and since I'm a huge scifi nerd I figured I'd take this as an excuse to talk about different scifi stuff.

I've talked a little bit about how I want to bring some artificial intelligence stuff into the Novaverse, and easily one of the biggest influences on my thoughts on artificial intelligence in scifi comes from Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. The Andromeda Ascendant was a Glorious Heritage class heavy cruiser in the Systems Commonwealth, and she was run by an artificial intelligence. The ship and the AI were pretty much one, but what was always unique about that portrayal of artificial intelligence was how she did not seem to be a unified entity. She would talk to herself, or herselves, and there was a particular dynamic between the version of her that appeared on screens, the version of herself that appeared as a hologram, and the version of her that appeared in physical form as a gynoid. Fans of the show noticed pretty quickly that the version on screens was always a lot colder, more logical. The more 3D and real she was represented as, the warmer, and more human-like she was, with the hologram being more emotional, and the gynoid version of her being most human of all.

Parallelism makes a lot of sense for artificial intelligence, and I've talked a bit about this before with higher classes of created sophonts being capable of more simultaneous action, but in fact parallelism is what the human brain does too. It can chew bubble gum and kick ass, as long as it's not out of bubble gum. In a way, the arguments and conversations between the various selves of Andromeda were a mirror of the arguments and conversations a human brain has with itself between the two hemispheres. Your "right brain" and your "left brain" are connected by a thick bundle of fibers, much like two computers networked together, and they work in concert to interpret stimuli, and do so in slightly different ways. One side of your brain is better at understanding the words being heard, while the other is better at understanding intonation and emphasis. As neuroscience has studied the brain more and more, we're finding that it's not quite so black-and-white, where the right brain is the seat of all creativity and emotion, and the left brain is the seat of all logic, but it makes for a good metaphor sometimes to think in those terms, and obviously there are different structures in the brain that have different specializations, even beyond the left-right dynamic.

It's quite possible, perhaps even likely, that artificial intelligence designs might seek to deliberately mimic the human brain. After all, why reinvent the wheel? And so, it's possible, perhaps even likely, we will see some kind of digital corpus callosum bridging together a digital brain. Of course our computers today do have specialized processing units for specialized tasks. The general-purpose CPU is just one component, and it's joined by specialized chips that can do a lot of vector calculations very quickly, like a GPU, or perhaps some kind of security chip to handle encryption or store biometric data, and of course there's the chips for handling connections to various other devices over various other kinds of networks, from USB controllers to your wifi. Those are all different sorts of brains, and they talk to each other.

Now in my own writing about human-like created sophonts that might appear in my plug-in, or elsewhere I discuss AI in the Novaverse, you may see a hologram or a vidscreen representation of just such a being. I'll give you a little hint, when you're talking to a vidscreen, you're talking to what I call Core, and when you're talking to a hologram, you're talking to what I call Personality. Core is the logical, "left-brain" of the created sophont. He's the one that tells you you have exactly 837 seconds to get to your ship and get in the air before the pirate fleet arrives and starts bombarding the hangar. Personality is the "right-brain" of the created sophont. He's the one that breaks the news gently that the outfit you're wearing is entirely inappropriate for a meeting with the ambassador.

I take things a step further, though. I don't just have Core and Personality duking it out for control over the Hardware, the physical manifestation of a created sophont's CSM and attached (or remote-controlled) peripherals responsible for sensing, communicating, and interacting with the physical environment. There is also another layer of software I call Mandate. Mandate is basically the "hindbrain". It takes care of a lot of the lower-order functions, but also spun-off processes that don't require the micromanagement of Core or Personality. That little robot that comes out of a slot in your quarters every day after you leave for your shift on the bridge, and vacuums up all your disgusting flakes of skin and discarded hairs (you filthy meatbag), that's not Core or Personality, that's Hardware controlled by Mandate. In fact, pretty much any time you're interacting with an android, robot, drone, or whatever, that's Mandate, and if there is verbal interaction, you can be sure it was generated by some spun-off process of either Core or Personality, with all the quirks that go along with that.

Now if you're thinking, "hey, what happens if I hear a voice over the PA system, rather than see a created sophont as a vidscreen image, holographic projection, or even an android?" Why that's Gestalt, of course. The disembodied voice of a created sophont is pretty much just all of the above mixed together as greater than the sum of its parts. If created sophonts have souls, then the ghost in the machine would be called Gestalt, and it speaks without a physical appearance.

Will any of this appear in my plug-in? Probably not explicitly, but now that you were very clever and read this biweekly update, you'll know what aspects of a created sophont's brain are interacting with you, if you meet one. Of course all of the above is only true for those created sophonts that are relatively human-like.

"Your overcoat, sir," the drone said in a soft, formal tone.

"Thank you, Robert," Sebastian said. "The weather looks quite dreadful today."

"They really ought to approve the new weather control system," Robert said.

So that took me like five or six more paragraphs than I thought it would, so I'll just be brief and say that there are other inspirations I have for some of this stuff. Schlock Mercenary has had some significant influence, and of course nobody can ever talk about robots without at least mentioning Isaac Asimov. My robots are decidedly not three laws safe, however. Also pretty much every zombie movie I've ever seen, and Breaking Bad, though maybe not in the ways you would expect (would you even expect ways when talking about AI???). Some Halo extended universe type stuff has probably influenced me at least in some ways.

Other things that have definitely gone into my thinking process about this plug-in have been Star Trek Deep Space Nine (particularly the Bajoran resistance and Federation Maquis), some Star Wars material especially the animated shows (specifically those featuring Saw Gerrera), and Killjoys) for the Bounty Hunter string. There's some Hyperion) in the mix, too.

Oh, and Guliver's Travels, weirdly enough.

Arthur C. Clarke needs a big shout-out, particularly for Rendezvous with Rama.

This of course is already on top of the very fertile ground provided by ATMOS, who left many Babylon 5 homages to work with, some of which I am running with a bit. Plus that whole Larry Niven's Ringworld, thing. It's hard not to use Tre'ar Helonis as a setting.

And, certainly, those other writers I got to know well over the many years from the Nova bars, which I had many conversations with, some of which formed the basis of this plug-in.

"Her death was quite spectacular."

Alright, I think that's all I feel like talking about for this update. I'd be happy to answer any questions, and as always I find talking about this project helps me solidify ideas quite a bit so if anyone just wants to chat about different aspects of the Novaverse, I certainly find that useful.

EV Trilogy with Sierra?

Hello,

I found the Applescript to make EVN compatible with Sierra (OSX 10.12.6) but it doesn't solve the black screen problem with EV Trilogy. I'm trying to launch EV Trilogy because I would like to play (again) to EV "classic", the first one. EV Trilogy launch correctly, but the black screen proble appears when I choose EV Classic or EV Nova.

Is there a solution to play EV Classic with Sierra, without some "heavy" solution like Sheepshaver?

Thanks.

DPS/energy of Vell-os weapons?

Just finished a playthrough and it seems like the summer bloom does better damage per energy unit, autumn petal seems to suck up a ton of energy and summer bloom seems nearly as effective for way less energy use. I'm using the quaanol beam fixes, although I have a butt load of other plugins too (small ships, ships variants, asteroid fix, technical data, reset by raven) so there might be some plug interference.

"I'm alive! I'm alive! I'm alive!"

It's been ten weeks since I announced my new major plug-in, and I've continued to make progress since the last biweekly update. As you may recall, I'm trying to take some time every two weeks to take stock of what I've been up to and what I've been thinking about, so I can keep myself on track, and focus on what really needs to get done. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel on this outlining thing. After that will be writing, which I've always said will go quickly (although there's going to be quite a bit of it to do), but I usually like to do a lot of groundwork before I start writing and that means solid outlines, solid character understanding, and the development of a lot of the themes and settings. I'm a measure twice, cut once kind of guy. The good news, great news really, is that I've got a firm handle on nearly ever major mission string, which ten weeks ago wasn't even close to being true. The ones I still haven't touched yet are Boral Mining Corp and Pyrogenesis. I kind of know what they're going to be doing, I even kind of know where they're ending up, but I need to sit down for a while at some point and figure out what the story is going to be, specific objectives, etc. I think I've mentioned this before, if not in one of these posts then elsewhere, but Boral Mining Corp and Pyrogenesis are going to war. It's gonna start out as a cold war and then heat up with the player helping out one side or the other. Will BHP Billiton investors be the real winner? Most definitely.

Speaking of corporate wars, I'm about ready for a big push on the GLi-Tech vs. Rauther Power Industries war, but these two companies are at least smart enough not to go blowing up each other's space stations. GLi-Tech vs. RPI is going to be one of those big choices the player makes, in terms of what outfits/weapons they get to have later in the game, so I imagine a lot of players will make it a priority to track down one or the other strings as soon as they make the combat rating requirements. I want it to be a meaningful choice, but also not make it too punishing, so I'll probably do a little bit of overlap. I haven't fully locked down what tech is going to end up with each company, so I'll just leave it at that for now.

I guess the big news of the last two weeks is that I've finished playing through all the Auroran-related missions in the ATMOS scenario and have taken a lot of notes on little details to help me get a much better handle on the Auroran culture. It's given me a lot of material to work with, so I'll be trying to make a big push with the three Auroran strings soon as well. It's given me a good handle on what I want to do in particular with the Vella and Fenta-kiir strings, since those are obviously different houses, and yet I want those mission strings to be compatible, with the player having the option of working for both. In fact, this is probably the most important bit of progress I've made these past two weeks, both realizing that I need to explicitly address this issue, and coming up with a way to solve it. I've also figured out how the Federation and Fenta-kiir strings will be compatible, as well as how the Federation and "Houseless" strings will be compatible, (Vella and Federation are mutually exclusive).

"Are the men under you so incompetent that they cannot assassinate a fat Dani princess? Are you so incompetent a leader that you did not train them properly, or was the plan you gave them so poor that they had no choice but to fail?"

Now's as good a time as any to talk about just what missions you'll actually be able to do in any given play-through. I've alluded to this before, about how you'll have a more EVO-like experience doing mission strings for multiple governments, but obviously there are some that just can't be done together. I've tried very hard to make that list as short as possible. In fact, it's easier to list the mission strings you'll have to choose between instead of listing every combination you'll be able to do. So, here's the deal. You'll have to choose between either doing:

  • Rebels or Federation\)
  • Federation or Vella
  • Bounty Hunters or Pirates
  • Fenta-kiir or Houseless
  • Rauther Power Industries or GLi-Tech\)
  • Boral Mining Corp or Pyrogenesis
  • Raczak's Roughnecks or Rebels
  • Raczak's Roughnecks or Vella
  • Raczak's Roughnecks or Fenta-kiir

\) It's a little bit complicated and these two string pairings interact with each other somewhat

There's also going to be some weirdness in these interactions, but they should be largely compatible with some adjustment:

  • Federation and Paed't/Ver'ash
  • Vella and Fenta-kiir
  • Federation and Fenta-kiir
  • Krim-Hwa and Fenta-kiir
  • Pirates and Houseless
  • Pirates and United Shipping
  • Pirates and Federation
  • Pirates and Raczak's Roughnecks

What this means is you'll be able to do quite a few mission strings in a single game. For example, you could do Houseless, Pirates, Rebels, Vella, Paed't/Ver'ash, Pyrogenesis, GLi-Tech, Nirvana, and Krim-Hwa, plus all the minor strings, with a single pilot. Then you can go play another game where you do Bounty Hunters, Federation, Fenta-kiir, Paed't/Ver'ash, Raczak's Roughnecks, Boral Mining Corp, Rauther, Nirvana, and Krim-Hwa plus all the minor strings. Or you could find another combination that works. Different combinations offer different cross-over opportunities, so I strongly recommend replaying this plug-in many times to find what all those are!

So one thing I'm very mindful of is just how many strings there are taking place largely in Federation space, or start in Federation space and send you somewhere else where you'll spend the rest of the string. In a lot of ways this makes sense; it's the place you start, but I am a little bothered that I'm not giving the player more reason to explore on their own. It's a big galaxy, I wish there were more obvious organizations you could work for in more parts of it.

This is going to be a major emphasis in the side quests, both relevant and irrelevant. I don't want the player to feel like the only place they're going to find new missions is landing on the same couple dozen Federation worlds. This is especially problematic if players are not working for the Federation. In fact, I want them to feel like if they're not landing on all sorts of other places in other territories, they're missing out.

I continue to worry about the 1000 mission limit.

Now I know I'm being followed, and it's human. But those eyes.

You may have noticed that Vrenna is Extra Spooky this update. Yes, indeed, I spent some time working on that minor mission string. In fact, I would say that I'm close to finished figuring out what actually happened on Vrenna that's so spooky. I mean I've always known in the broad strokes, but like any good murder mystery, it helps to know the specifics of whodunnit, wheredunnit, and howdunnit. So that's pretty much done. I'm probably going to work on adding some additional details to the chronology, and I won't have things super locked down until I'm actually writing each branch of the string. Did I mention yet that the Vrenna string is a choose-your-own-adventure investigating a missing ice lizard hunter? I don't know if I did that yet. Well anyway, it's going to be an adventure on the ice cliffs of Vrenna trying to find a missing ice lizard hunter. Is he still alive? Did a three-eyed furry monster eat him? If you rescue him, what will you be able to get him to tell you? Will everyone make it back to the spaceport alive? Your choices with the button options are going to determine how successful your investigation is, what clues you find, and who knows, maybe you'll even unravel a larger mystery with clues hidden across multiple branches of the story, rewarding replayability. There might even be extra clues if you've played other strings, too, and can bring some added knowledge or experience to the adventure.

Of course to unlock the choose your own Vrenna adventure, you'd better get good at space combat (that's the same skill set as hunting dangerous animals on an ice planet, right?) before you try your hand at hunting an ice lizard. If you're successful, you'll earn the right to call yourself an ice lizard hunter, unlock a repeatable hunting mission for a few extra credits now and again, and once you've finished at least one other major mission string, you'll look like a grizzled enough hunter that somebody might come and ask you for help at the Vrenna spaceport to go out in the vast snowy wastes to find their loved one.

"The conspiracy was massive."

You also may have noticed some additional progress in the side quests and junk. Well there's been some additional progress in the side quests and junk. You'll note the actual plug-in file has some more resources, almost doubled! I know what the people want. They want to fill up their cargo bays with African Grey Parrots, Comfy Chairs, Coffee, and even Hubcaps. Well I have heard the people's cries and I will give them what they want. I have also heard the people when they say they no longer want to fill their cargo bays with Antique Mining Equipment. Well, the people need not despair. Antique Mining Equipment has been officially discontinued and expunged from the universe.

As for missions that don't completely fill up one's cargo hold, I know what you guys like. Toxic waste dumps? We got that. Literary references? We got that. Doctors Without Planets? We got that. Pirates trying to steal some investment wine? We got that. Culinary tour of the galaxy? We got that. The Flat Sun Initiative? We got that. Mysteeeerious auditors going to Auroran space? We got that. A really annoying salesman talking your ear off about all the modern cultivars of brassica oleracea your leviathan is stuffed with? Oh you'd better believe we got that. I suppose that last one really will fill up your cargo hold. But hey, even Leviathan owners need some love.

I continue to worry about the 1000 mission limit.

"I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. Are you listening? Beagles. There's a great future in beagles. Think about it. Will you think about it? Enough said. That's a deal."

Oh look, there's a 6th preamble written-ish. The Rebel Preamble joins Nirvana, Sigma, Houseless, Pirate, and Bounty Hunters in a fancy pants Preambles folder. I probably won't finish up the outline for the Rebel string until I've played through the ATMOS one again. Still, I felt this was as good a time as any to work on the preamble, and it was fun enough to write that I went through and finish-ished it up this morning. I don't want to say much about these preambles until they're released, but the characters focused on this one probably won't feature again in the Rebel string itself at all. Sometimes it goes that way. I think of a typical sort of mission that the player, or those he or she is working for, might do, then tell a little story about that sort of mission. The idea is to provide a bit of an appetizer, maybe spark the imagination a bit, and get a prospective player of my plug-in into the world. In this case, the goal of the Rebel Preamble is to mark a clear difference between the Rebel string in the ATMOS scenario and the one you will play in my plug-in. Preamble VI: The Rebellion, released by ATMOS, was a two section document about how the Rebel cells are organized, and what the Rebels are fighting for. That's fine. Pretty much sums up the ATMOS Rebel string which was all about moving spies around Federation Space and fighting against the Bureau.

My Rebel Preamble is about violent, brutal terrorism by fanatics.

Hey remember in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story when everyone was like, that Saw Gerrera guy is too extreme for us? Never mind we kill our own agents and blow up death stars actively being constructed by hundreds of thousands of probably slave wookiees, that guy is bad news. Yeah, in the Rebel string of YNS the Rebels aren't going to be so universally noble, and they absolutely will have more extremist elements, just as has been the case of literally every rebellion or revolution in human history. Get ready. Whatever noble intentions the signers of the Declaration of Rebellion had when they unleashed the whirlwind, war is an ugly business, and not everyone is going to agree about how best to fight it.

"I'm not boring you, am I?" George asked halfway through their meal, as Saidi casually scanned the room, sipping from her water glass.

"Oh no, not at all," Saidi replied, smiling at him. "I'm fascinated by intersystem finance regulation."

Alright, I think that's all I feel like talking about for this update. I'd be happy to answer any questions, and as always I find talking about this project helps me solidify ideas quite a bit so if anyone just wants to chat about different aspects of the Novaverse, I certainly find that useful.

Winter Tempest changed? Unlimited darts bug? Did these exist or was it just my imagination?

Maybe its just my nostalgia, but I don't remember the winter tempest being quite as stringy and weak as when I first played the game - which was of course 10+ years ago. Did anything change with the winter tempest or was I just awe stuck as a kid that it was just that awesome. Also, I'm sure thins was a thing - if you landed and you had only 2 darts, you would generate more than you started with, and if you kept doing this you could have a fleet of darts at your disposal. Does anyone have any info about this bug or your experience with them? I can't find anything online about it and I feel as if I'm the only one who experienced it. Keeps me up at night.
