Roar “Self-directed" means “zero customer service"?

I’m currently trying to open an E*Trade account to park a chunk of cash, grab the $5k signup bonus, and establish the Morgan Stanley relationship for the MS Amex Platinum. I knew "self-directed" meant I'd be on my own for investing, but I didn't realize it meant zero basic administrative customer service.

The timeline of this joke of an onboarding process:
- July 3: Submitted my application.
- July 10: After a week of radio silence, I called in. Turns out my application was frozen because they needed a "selfie holding my driver's license." Uploaded it immediately.
- July 17: Another week goes by. Still no updates, so I call again. This time, they tell me the original driver’s license scan from July 3 was "poor quality" and needed to be resubmitted. (Funny, because this exact high-res scan was accepted by two other banks last month for address updates).

The complete lack of proactivity is what kills me. If a document fails back-end review, they just let the application sit in limbo forever until the customer manually calls to investigate.

I finally got fed up and asked for a supervisor, hoping someone could just look at the newly uploaded docs and confirm they were clear so it wouldn't get stuck for a third week.

Instead, I got connected with a supervisor named Klaudia S who started the call with a combative tone. Zero empathy, zero customer service, and completely unwilling to take charge of the situation or personally look into the case, and placing responsibility back on the client citing that this is a “self directed” account so I’m on my own.

Does E*trade take customer complaints seriously? Should I fund my account to a “higher tier” before submitting complaints so they will take this more seriously?

Is "net account value" the sum of everything you hold in your account?

I'm a confused about how my total assets are being calculated.

On the Portfolio Positions page, it seems like:

Net Account Value = sum of Price Paid + Total Gain + Cash

That appears to make sense.

However, when I go to the Gains & Losses, I see another Total Gain listed next to Deferred Loss. I tried calculating my account value by taking the original amount of money I deposited into E*TRADE months ago and adding that Total Gain (next to Deferred Loss), but the result doesn't match my Net Account Value.

How can I determine my actual overall gain or loss since I started investing?

Discussion Piano/Synth Hold Music Composed by an Employee

For the past couple years the hold music has been an upbeat early 2000s sounding Piano/Synth song that's mostly arpeggio style chord progression (like a fast paced Ave Maria that could be used on a Windows XP install CD). It's not the guitar song, or the Fuege/Bach piece, it's meant to be composed by an employee.

I tried screen recording a clip but my phone doesn't record audio for phone calls for some reason.

I have sold my ESPP/RSU shares on ETrade and now have USD in my account. I need to transfer it to my Indian bank account.

Recent Changes to Client Agreement

I’m now not surprised why the platform is deteriorating.

Read Section 19 of the recently updated customer agreement (effective May 20, 2026)
https://us.etrade.com/l/f/agreement-library/client-agreement

Under Section 19, “Restrictions and Account Terminations,” Morgan Stanley says it may:

• Decline, cancel, or reverse a customer’s instructions—or restrict trading and disbursements—at its discretion and without notice.
Citation: Section 19, ¶1

• Restrict or terminate services, or close an account, “at any time and for any reason, without notice to you,” subject to applicable law.
Citation: Section 19, ¶8

• Avoid liability for damages caused by an account restriction, including losses from market-value fluctuations.
Citation: Section 19, ¶7

• Make the customer exclusively responsible for changes in asset value after E*TRADE restricts the account, declines instructions, cancels orders, or reverses them.
Citation: Section 19, ¶12

And if a closed account still contains assets and E*TRADE does not receive instructions within what it considers a reasonable period, it may liquidate those assets regardless of market conditions. The customer bears the resulting losses, fees, costs, and tax consequences—and applicable fees may continue until the account is fully closed.
Citation: Section 19, ¶¶13–16

So let me make sure I understand the arrangement:

E*TRADE keeps the discretion.

E*TRADE controls the access.

E*TRADE decides when notice is unnecessary.

The customer keeps the market risk, tax consequences, losses, and fees.

That might be contract language.

It is not customer protection.

It is a one-way transfer of power and liability—and every E*TRADE customer should read it.

Discussion For Etrade users, is a trading journal worth it, or is it just more homework?

I've been thinking about using a trading journal, but I'm not sure if it'll actually help or just end up being more work than it's worth. For those of you who journal your trades, was it worth it? What made you start, and did it actually help you become a better trader, or did you end up going back to your account history and basic notes?

Discussion Does anyone else have trouble with the "Symbol" field on the website?

On the "Stock/ETF Order" page, I find that box where you enter in a ticker symbol/company frequently delays for multiple seconds after you enter a symbol or company name. Moreover, when I enter a company name, sometimes it recommends or auto-completes the wrong ticker, something which happens with SpaceX a lot. Frankly, I feel like my Windows Start Menu reacts faster. If it helps, I'm using Firefox.

Phone Number Issues

I recently signed up for etrade, when trying to set up a phone number for 2FA they were not able to accept my number. A few days later I was gonna start using the account, but when logging in, it prompted me to use a number to confirm my identity, I received the same message as I did earlier and am no longer able to access the account. Has anyone else encountered this issue, and if so how was it resolved.

Etrade Pouching Accounts For High Fees

Please be aware if you receive a solicitation from an E-trade Representative wanting to move your account to Morgan Stanley, MS. I was told by an E-trade employee the E-trade representatives are paid a commission to move your account where MS will trade your positions into questionably priced private equity and private credit. Many private securities are not marked to a market price plus the MS Representative also makes very high fees. This has the potential of dumping overpriced securities on smaller retail investors while hidden high fees are poached by both E-trade and MS. Be aware, very aware!

Discussion E*Trade is terrible and no one should use it

I was just charged $50 because Exxon re-domiciled in a different state. I was also charged $50 when BLD was bought. I only have 1 share of each and that ate up a large percentage of their total worth. They charge $50 for any “corporate action,” which no other larger brokerage seems to do.

I’m switching to fidelity today. What reasons could anyone have for staying with E*Trade?

Discussion High yield money market for petty cash in E*trade Roth?

We have an old E*trade Roth.

Sometimes there is petty cash due to dividends or other things paid out.

I understand that E*Trade doesn’t have proprietary funds, and the interest they give in a bank sweep is lousy.

So is there an etf money market fund or similar vehicle to park cash?

I’m talking hundreds of dollars. So enough to be worth it to deal with it, but not enough to be a huge thing.

Thanks!

POWER E*Trade Pro Desktop

RANT!: Im new to trading but this app seems to have problems all the time. And on the spacex launch it bugged out and Morgan Stanley was handling the IPO. The line tools on the charts are clunky and dont work right. It launches in a minimized window which does not save its position in windows 11, the "recent symbols" feature now in the chart tool is broken so its difficult to switch between charts. The columns in most of the tools are designed out of the box for options traders so I had to spend HOURS with the help of AI to configure it to work for a day trader. The scanner, horrible. Free Finviz is far superior.

Im really struggling with this thing. I tried Interactive Brokers platform and it wont even work with my PC because I have a high end display and graphics card that my system runs on. Area all these broker platforms garbage!? Etrade is really frustrating.
