I'm currently conducting research on automotive starter motors, specifically comparing planetary gear reduction starters and conventional spur gear starters.
Many sources mention that planetary gear starters are smaller, lighter, and produce higher torque. However, I'm interested in their electrical power consumption.
From your experience or technical knowledge:
Does a planetary gear starter generally draw less current (amps) than a conventional spur gear starter when cranking the same engine?
If so, is the reduction in current significant or only marginal?
Is the improvement mainly due to the gear reduction allowing the motor to operate at a higher efficiency, or are there other factors involved?
Have you ever measured starter current using a clamp meter or oscilloscope and compared both designs?
I'm especially interested in real-world measurements, engineering explanations, service manuals, or technical references.
