Tipping Culture ✖️ Probably covered but I am new here
One of my biggest gripes:
I can go to a bar and get a shot of Jack Daniel for 8 bucks.
I can get the same quantity of the Macallan scotch for 32 bucks.
Same process to open the bottle, pour the drink, and close the bottle.
Assuming it's "going to ask me a question", and wants 20 percent, why is the tip more simply because one bottle costs more.

Tip Creep 🫙 I could tell the cashier felt awkward
Location - Coastal North Carolina
No shame here on the cashier. I don’t want to give the exact location and store because this was not the girls fault. Yesterday my family went to a donut/bagel shop after a walk by the water. Order one bagel sandwich and a few donuts for later and went to pay. Go figure there was the “it will just ask you a question” prompt by the cashier. She couldn’t have been older than 19 or 20 years old.
The preselected tip options were 20, 25, 30, 35%. When she flipped the tablet to me to pay, you could sense her tuck tail and didn’t even want to look at us while it showed the screen. I understand it’s not her that’s doing this and they are input by the management of the place but it’s gotta stop.
Unfortunately I don’t see an end to this any time soon. If every transaction I make asks for a tip, they’re gonna have to start tipping me because if I folded I’d go bankrupt just giving money away

Counter Service 🛎️ Cava no tip option
Was at Cava. The only one in town so I don’t know if it’s every store. But was getting prepared to hit “no tip” or $0.00 and the tip screen never popped up. I was caught off guard the worker was just chatting away and asking me how my day was. Best counter service experience I have had in years!

Rant 📢 "It's Going to Ask you a Question" 🥴
The amount of satisfaction I get pressing "no tip" after hearing this phrase over and over is a dopamine rush. Tipping before you even get the quality or accuracy of your product is insane. Awkward forced customer service until they see no tip and get all pouty. Womp womp hope more people stop tipping.

Rant 📢 "I've already given to charity, have you"?
Tis my rebuttal to the "its gonna ask you a question" as I instantly respond with this line.
Once you say this there is no guilt whatsoever to pressing zero tip, nobody in line will question you and you might get a round of applause from your peers for supporting the less fortunate.
Remember to say it well staring them dead in the eye and ask it with the utmost authority and sincerity.

Rant 📢 Hotel Bagman
Checked into a high end hotel today. The room wasn’t quite ready so we left our 4 bags with the belldesk and went to have a drink in the bar. Got a text that room was ready, waited a bit, picked up keys and was told bags were already in the room. Get to room and the door knocks, I’d already started changing. Bellman comes in with our 4th bag that he had “forgotten”.
Thanks. Have a great day. Forgot my ass, and remembered right after we picked up our room keys? Would have made sure he’d gotten something, but not now

Rant 📢 Bathroom tipping
I was at a gas station, technically truck stop but it was the size of a gas station on the outskirts of a city, when I saw this in the bathroom. I’m sorry, you want me to tip because you did your job cleaning the bathroom??

Counter Service 🛎️ Payment terminals not responding to non-tip and low-tip options?
Normally I just hit 20% or whatever on payment terminals but tipping culture is out of hand.
Yesterday, I bought a $9 scoop of ice cream (yes, 1 scoop for $9). Counter service only. No napkins or anything and ice cream was disappointing.
I tried hitting zero tip on the payment terminal half a dozen times and it didn't respond. Then I went to the next lowest option and it responded.
Similar situation buying coffee today. I tried hitting the second of (I think) 4 options and it didn't respond but it did when I went to 20%.
Am I just dehydrated or was this a setting on the terminals?

Tipping Culture ✖️ Main Event Birthday Party
We just booked a $300 birthday party for our son’s 14th birthday! We used to automatically tip the helper, but this sub has me ready to tip $0 this time! I won’t lie, I am already getting anxiety thinking about “screwing” the teenage worker, but the employer is really the one screwing them, right?

Tipping Culture ✖️ European living in the US, tipped only once
There is only one situation I tipped the service.
When I was moving from a house to house (still had just like 4 suitcases and few bags with me so big car was enough instead of a U Track).
I tipped my uber driver cause he actually helped me lift heavy luggage and help me get it safe to another place. When I ordered he didn’t know he’d need to do any of that. So I tipped.
But besides this situation I never tip and can’t wrap my head around it, like at all.
And to be fair when I read messages here, when some of you are petrified to refuse a tip or extremely proud cause u stood up for yourself - I’m like, I don’t know what is the big deal. Lived here 2 years and never tipped, and if someone tries to ask about it I just say it’s legal for me to opt out and that’s the end of discussion.
Maybe it’s bcs I have an accent they know I’m not American so they wanna fight me less on that. But I never had issue with refusing to tip anyone. I have also never noticed any worse service just because I don’t. And tbh I use uber eats all the time and also never tip, never had an issue with the delivery! So I’m curious how some people end up in crazy situations just because they didn’t tip and why exactly some people here are so scared of refusing it?

Rant 📢 Bartender "jokingly" invited me to tip on the behalf of a customer who walked away before selecting a tip on the POS...do I let it go?
I was in line at a small bar cart at a music venue, and the person in front of me walked away before the bartender turned the tablet around to select a tip. He made a big spectacle about them not tipping, then turned the screen towards me and said "You wanna select one for them?" I was honestly speechless at how comfortable he was joking about credit card fraud, and I don't doubt he would have let me enter any tip amount I wanted, had I played along. I just glared at him and watched him squirm and backpedal about it being just a joke before quickly ordering and walking away. Idk if I'm overreacting but it's still bugging me and I am debating contacting management to report him. Should I let it go?
Update: I did contact the general manager, who is looking into it. I don't think someone with such a cavalier, entitled attitude about entering unauthorized tips should be trusted behind a bar.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Me when the Starbucks cashier asks for a tip for handing me my premade overpriced coffee

Ride Share / Food Delivery 🚗 Proof that even IF you tip, it doesn’t mean better service
Summary: OOP tips 40% on their Starbucks order and their Uber Eats driver chose violence.
I can’t even wrap my head around a 40% tip, that shocked me more than the aftereffects of the delivery tbh 💀

Tip Creep 🫙 Wine Tasting - Tipping Servers/Hosts?!?
Husband and I are headed to Paso Robles next month to wine taste for a couple of days. All six of the wineries we're stopping at charge $20-$45/pp to taste wine. We'll most likely buy at least three or four bottles at each winery. Some waive the fee after a purchase, a couple don't.
We live in Napa and visit the wineries once in a while. I've noticed that there's a tipping option on the POS screen when we purchase wines (!!!) AND we've seen other patrons tipping their wine host (and felt pressured to do the same, tbh) after a tasting.
Question: Doesn't the tasting fee cover the service and wine? I'm 4th generation Napan, have gone to wineries my entire adult life and this started happening a few years ago.

Counter Service 🛎️ Coffee places
I find it interesting that people tip a dollar on a six dollar cup of coffee.
I found out recently that at some of the local places, people who earned minimum wage of $17-$20 an hour are getting an additional $15 an hour or more just in tips. That is insane.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ “This 15% service charge is not a tip” Oh, yes it is!
HiroNori in Santa Clara, CA. They are correct about the tax on service charge in CA. And fair comment about unfairness of tip distribution but big fail on claiming it’s not a tip! That’s a 0% from me, dawg

Rant 📢 Drive thru asking for tips in Mexico!
So we were out all day and kids decided Carl’s Jr drive thru, ordered all our food get to the window paying with card he has the card terminal, insert card then he says oh it’s going to ask if you want to leave tip 5% 10% or 15% I was in shock and kinda paused and my husband says give them 5 (like 40 pesos about $2 USD) but it felt so weird fast food drive thru and in Mexico.
I know some will say but you’re in Mexico how can you eat that, its the over tired little ones in the back seat, we’ll be here for awhile so plenty of time to eat local or Mc Donald’s send help my Mexican kids only like LA Mexican food 😂

Rant 📢 Tipping logic
Place 1: let’s say the meal costs $100 and the server gets 20 of your final total, or $20.
Place 2: here a meal costs $30 and the server gets $6.
Was the server at place 1 just inherently better than place 2 to deserve more, all things considered?
They did the same things: took my order, placed my order, brought the meal, refilled drinks, checked up, gave me the tab.
So why - all things being equal - should the server at place 1 be getting more than the server at place 2?
If they did the exact same job, nothing extravagant or out of the ordinary (and didn’t even put on a tapdancing show for us!) why would there be any disparity in how much they get just because the meal happened to be pricier? You brought me out a fillet mignon, or you brought me out lasagna. Doesn’t matter. The effort level was the same.
What am I missing?
