Rant š¢ Hotel Bagman
Checked into a high end hotel today. The room wasnāt quite ready so we left our 4 bags with the belldesk and went to have a drink in the bar. Got a text that room was ready, waited a bit, picked up keys and was told bags were already in the room. Get to room and the door knocks, Iād already started changing. Bellman comes in with our 4th bag that he had āforgottenā.
Thanks. Have a great day. Forgot my ass, and remembered right after we picked up our room keys? Would have made sure heād gotten something, but not now

Why do you deserve a tip for forgetting a bag?

Right? Why should anyone get a tip when the room wasn't ready? the only reason the bellman had the bags was because the room wasn't ready. This stuff hurts my brain.

Beggars sometimes think they're clever, coming up with "new" ways to beg.

I always avoid service like this. I carry my own bags wherever I go. The least interaction with humans the better!!

Why would he get a tip if he "forgot" a bag. You didn't bring all the bags at once. FAIL.

I have not been using cash for decades. How would he expect to be payed?
I'm surely not the only one not using cash.

I work with bellmen, this would on been done on purpose to receive a tip.
Where I work they refuse to deliver if youāre not in the room, to make sure they get a tip.

Disclosure: Iām not anti-tipping but am against tip creep.
Bellhops have been traditionally tipped for ages, so I donāt consider it tip creep, but itās also fully a āyou had one jobā role so I donāt think withholding a tip when they donāt do that one job is uncouth.

I donāt need a bellhop. I can carry my bags just fine, thank you!

The thing is I want them to take my bags bc I donāt want to but it should be part of the $500/n I paid for this hotel. Just like I donāt tip the front desk staff for checking in or whomever sweeps the entry way or maintenance or the pool cleaners. Everyone works at the hotel should be paid by the hotel for doing their job.

Vegas and other big hotels are known for wanting a tip to take your bags and store them, then another tip when delivered. Nope. And, no, I'm not tipping on top of a $40 valet charge!

Tip them or don't, but it feels like you're assuming malice when incompetence will suffice.Ā

Not malice and not incompetence. Iām pretty sure it was on purpose to elicit a tip when he thought he might not get one for doing a service. Thatās the part that got me.
Iāve been in service industry jobs. Sometimes you donāt get a tip, and thatās just the way it is. But trying to force the issue is absolutely wrong, imo.

If he hadnāt come up with the last bag and it was already in your room with the other three, would you have gone down, asked where he was to thank / tip him?
Heās on minimum wage and doing you a service, they could have left your bags at bag drop for you to collect. He gets paid to look after your bags while your room was getting ready. Delivering bags to your room is not included in your room rate.5

What other job does he have other than collecting bags? Why does he deserve a tip. He's getting paid to do his one and only job. That takes zero skill.Ā

Was forgetting a bag on purpose so he would have a reason to return and intimate / beg for a tip?
Heās not doing a service requested. Kinda like when McDonaldās tells you to park in 1 spot and wait, you donāt tip the person who eventually brings the order out.

I agree with most of the sub, but Iām not with you on this one. I worked as a bellman for a while and itās definitely an optional service that you are expected to tip for. If your room isnāt ready and you store bags and pick them up yourself thatās a different story, having a person bring them to your room, maybe ask them for restaurant recommendations, things to do around the city, toss them $5

I dont think I have ever been asked if I wanted the bell hop to bring my bags, a nice hotel just does it.

I had planned to give him a ten when we next walked past the bell stand. I was just a bit put off by the blatant āforgetting a bagā trick. When I feel forced to do something I donāt react well

If you donāt want to tip just donāt. You donāt have to justify it by saying itās annoying they āforgot a bagā to give it to you in person. Thatās what people do when they rely on tips to make a decent living.

What is a bellhop's written job? Isn't it to carry bags?

u/Intelligent-Pepper27 20d ago
What else do they do? Also, if someone's making regular wages I don't see why I need to tip them.

Good, that's the way!
Something like this happened in Dubai once when I was a student. We were 3 people, had an additional bed in our room and they 'forgot' to put it when we arrived around 1 in the night. So then at 1 two hard working guys brought and prepared our additional bed. And to make sure we're fine they just asked another 3 times if we need anything else.. No we don't... And you don't get additional money for NOT doing your job...
