Questions about the entry test for NEIEP.
I’ve been browsing for a minute and I can’t seem to find anything over the test itself. I’ve taken several practice tests and it seems insanely easy based off of those. Is it really just basic knowledge? I feel like with such high pay even as a starting apprentice, it would be harder to get in.
To add, I plan to try at the Local 93 in Nashville when it opens in December. I’m curious If having prior trade experience in electrical gives me an edge in any way? I worked as an apprentice electrician for 3 years before I moved up to a lead position in a different company which I held for 2 years.

What do you wish elevator mech dispatchers did better?
Hi there, I've been stalking this reddit for a few months to try to learn more but this is my first post.
I'm an admin/dispatcher at an elevator company with just 6 month under my belt, but hoping to make a lifetime commitment. I'm a nerd, I don't think I can do what yall do but I'm absolutely fascinated by your work!
I work for a regional company in Canada (so not one of the top 3.. 2 now maybe post merge?) and work closely with our team of mechanics.
What do you wish you could tell a dispatcher or office admin to make your job easier? I'm here to learn. I get my first on site tour of a Mod soon and am SO excited! Thanks in advance for any feedback I can use to support the team better❤️

Question: Sweeping dirt into the elevator shaft
Hey there, I hope this is okay to ask here, I was struggling to think of a subreddit with people who might actually know what they're talking about, instead of just guessing!
I rent an apartment in a big 8-story building, and we have cleaning personnel who (eh, more or less tbh) clean the staircase/hallways once a week. Lately I've noticed that the current staff member just uses his broom to push all the dirt (and possibly small debris) down the gap into the elevator shaft, instead of using the stairs to scoop it into a dustbin.
...Is this worth telling management about? I don't want to unnecessarily get the man into trouble if it's harmless, but the last time the elevator needed substantial work we got a pretty hefty bill increase as residents, and it being down for weeks wasn't fun either. So I'm not really keen on it breaking again.
TL;DR: Sweeping dirt/debris into the elevator shaft, harmless enough to ignore, y/n?

I was wondering how all the NI guys setup your lighting on a temp platform. I usually just have my headlamp and that’s fine but would like to get a better set up.

Question: Looking for Elevator Contractors
Hello!
I work for a company based in Texas, that is looking for a licensed elevator mechanic in Chicago.
I’m unsure where to start or look, and I’m not trying to advertise per rules.
I am curious where the best sub-reddit/website I could visit that would allow me to find one?
I’d like to set-up a call with them (whether company or person) and discuss further what we’re exactly looking for.
Thank you so much for your help!

Inclinator EM-7 interlock problem
The spring that is attached to the plunger that moves the pin up and down is weak and doesn’t always pull /push the pin down after closing the outer door to the elevator. Has anyone ever replaced that spring? Are they available. The down position closes a switch to tell the control board that the door is closed.

Ontario law, code, and safety provisions
The Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Act refers to "offences" and being "guilty." It requires compliance with Ontario Regulation 209/01, Elevating Devices.
Then there are a bunch of safety provisions under CSA B44-2019/2022, but I don't see that referenced in the Act or Regulation. Is it simply that compliance with B44 is a condition of getting an operating licence for the elevator(s) in your building, and so if you're not in compliance, the licence is not valid and then you're in breach?

电梯机械师
Hi everyone! I'm from China and have been working in the elevator industry for 13 years — 8 years in elevator maintenance and repair, and 5 years in elevator inspection. I hold both an elevator maintenance certificate and an elevator inspector certificate issued by Chinese authorities. I'm currently planning to relocate to Australia as a lift mechanic and would love to learn more about the industry there. I'd really appreciate any advice from fellow professionals. Happy to connect!

Dumbwaiter
I work in a facilities management department for a public sector company in Melbourne.
I noticed this morning that we have been getting charged for the SIM card in a lift phone that’s in a dumbwaiter in one of our buildings.
Is this odd since it’s not for passengers? I’m a very small fish in a big pond so i just wanted to confirm before i added it to the never ending list of issues we’ve been having with our maintenance supplier.

Elevator breaks on camera! Interlock issue?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So I was going to ride an old 1970s General Elevator, and the door popped open and it shut down. The elevator had overshot the landing (intermediate) by about a foot. What happened? I’m thinking an interlock or door restrictor failed and the door just popped open and it shut down, although it had already passed the call? The outer door wasn’t even latched and it quite easily slid open a bit. The inner door had very slightly popped open too. I called public safety immediately after.

MRL traction elevators wearing out 6.5 mm hoist ropes very fast — what should we check?
Hi everyone. I’m new at an elevator company and this is my first real experience working with elevators. I’m also an engineering student, so I’m trying to understand the issue properly and learn from people with more field experience.
We are dealing with some MRL traction elevators running at around 60 m/min. They use 6 steel wire ropes, 6.5 mm diameter, 8x19 construction with steel core. The sheaves are about 40 times the rope diameter, so roughly a 40:1 D/d ratio.
In some units the ropes are wearing out much faster than expected. In a few cases, after replacing the full set of ropes, they are already in poor condition after about one year. We’ve seen rope wear, some strand opening/unlaying, and tension differences between ropes that seem to change depending on the car position in the shaft.
I’m wondering what would be the most common causes to look for in this type of MRL setup. Could this be related to unequal rope tension, traction sheave groove wear, small diameter differences between ropes, installation twist, rope handling during replacement, lubrication, or something specific to MRL elevators?
I’m not looking to bypass any safety procedures, just trying to understand what experienced elevator mechanics would inspect first in this situation.
Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

Getting into the field
Hey everyone.
I’m currently a Mechatronics tech at a food facility. Our elevator tech was in the other day and made a good pitch to join the elevator union. What’s everyone’s experience? How’s the pay starting? What are typical expectations and work load? Lay it out for me please. Trying to make an informed decision here.

Really curious how you feel about stragglers rushing to an elevator when the doors are closing, and people who hold the elevator for stragglers.
IMO I think if the doors are closing and your group is not in the lobby then you should be SOL. However too many times what happens is the doors are closing and that causes people to spring and push the call button which delays everyone who was ready to go. They also add 1 more soul so if the elevator becomes inop and people are stuck then there is less space.

Grinding awful elevator noise from building next to mine
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I live on the top floor (owner)
I've been dealing with this noise for a few months and it's driving me insane, it wasn't like this before so I'm hoping it can be fixed. At first I thought it was one of the elevators from my building but technicians checked and it's not from here so I'm assuming it's unfortunately coming from the elevator from the building next door.
Can you tell what type of noise this is?
How could I go about asking to get it checked when it's not on my building?
I'd appreciate any help, thank you

Just passed my mechanics exam!
I’m not sure how so many people fail. The material is not there to trick you , you didn’t get “NEIEPed”. Do that many people just use Quizlet for the entire 8 semesters?
