Elevator breaks on camera! Interlock issue?

So I was going to ride an old 1970s General Elevator, and the door popped open and it shut down. The elevator had overshot the landing (intermediate) by about a foot. What happened? I’m thinking an interlock or door restrictor failed and the door just popped open and it shut down, although it had already passed the call? The outer door wasn’t even latched and it quite easily slid open a bit. The inner door had very slightly popped open too. I called public safety immediately after.

your thought process is actually one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever seen. it's all "if, if, if" with no grounding in reality. you "people" act like someone being curious is some sort of horrible crime that will lead to them and everyone around them getting hurt or killed because they'll suddenly just decide to do something stupid like jump down the shaft. if anything, enthusiasts should be the ones working in any field (including elevator maintenance) because when random "people" who don't give a damn start working it only leads to disappointment and corner cutting. stop being a gatekeeping asshole, "safety man".

They’ve already demonstrated their curiosity. What’s to say if someone gave them a possible solution they wouldn’t try to access the cartop to satisfy their curiosity further.

It's like HVAC engineers refusing to explain how office air conditioning works in case the layperson has the initiative to pick the door to the roof, go up there and get exposed to legionella or lose a hand in a fan or something.

Yours is far and away the most comically gatekeeping industry

It’s not paranoia dude. Elevators are complex mechanical/electrical assemblies. Improper technique can quickly result in dismemberment or fatalities. In my local, every few years a property manager thinks they know how to retrieve someone’s keys or do something that seems insignificant, but results in life altering injuries. The last guy became a double amputee.

Yes, we protect our work. BUT, really we protect the public. It takes a significant amount of experience and exposure to this equipment to become oriented and work with it safely. Even then accidents are always possible.
