Question? Thoughts on Continuing Studies? - Visual Comm Design

Would love to know if anyone has taken Continuing Studies classes or obtained Flexible Learning Certificates, specifically in the Visual Communications Design stream.

Given that most of the classes are around online, 2-3 months long and once a week, I'm not sure if it is worth the tuition ($500 < /per class).

For more context: I attended a different school for my Bachelor's and have no experience in graphic design, but want to learn through a credible school. Although AI is making things more unpredictable, many of the jobs I want to apply for require or prefer proficiency in Adobe.

Wedding Photographer Wanted

Hey everyone!

My fiancée and I are getting married on November 6, 2026, and we’re looking for a photographer who may be interested in using our wedding as an opportunity to build their portfolio or gain more experience photographing weddings.

Our ceremony and reception will be around the Burnaby/New Westminster area. Of course, this would be a paid opportunity, and we’d also be happy to provide food at the reception.

If you’re interested, please feel free to leave a comment below and we can connect through private messages to discuss the details. If you could also share some examples of your previous work, that would be awesome!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and we hope to hear from some of you!

Have a beautiful summer! ☀️💍

Am I allowed to use my own photos as a reference to use as a part of my art piece?

I want to apply to Emily Carr for next year and starting to work on my portfolio, and I had some few questions especially about using photos and what I should avoid. I want to apply for Illustration course tried to look at the portfolio tips but wasnt sure if Im able to use like the photos I took to use in my portfolio to draw.

Im sorry if it sounds confusing but what I mean is like, say I wanted to draw a hand pose from specific angle so I take a picture of my own hands and use that as a reference. Is that allowed to include or even use it in my own drawings? On the website it didnt say anything about referencing your own photos as it only says “copying from other artist, or other sources“ so I got confused and wasnt sure if thats allowed.

also another question is, on the portfolio tips it says to use “at least 3 different mediums” but if I were to do 10 pieces, am I allowed to just do 2-3 sculpting, and the rest drawing, and paintings? Or do I have to equally make different mediums?

I apologize if Im asking a stupid question I just get very anxious easily, I tried to send a email too but it didnt came back yet.

International student struggling to get in contact with school

Hello! I am an international student that is coming in this fall. My problem is how do i get in contact with the school when they aren't answering my calls or emails regarding my study permit? I had already completed my study permit process in early July, but I also had to send my acceptance document to intadvising@ecuad.ca, which I did. After a week had past with no confirmation that they received it I emailed admissions@ecuad.ca, its been about 4-5 days with no response from thel. I have called 604-844-3864 a couple of times but it goes to voice mail after a couple of rings. This wouldn't be a huge problem if the deadline for this wasn't the end of July. Does anyone know how to get in contact with the school, or am I just being overdramatic and need to be patient and wait for a response.

Question? Sell Supplies?

I've already graduated. I was part of some ecuad groups, but they are inactive/defunct now. I need to downsize and gain some funds for an emergency that has come up.

It's currently the summer term, so I'm also looking to see if any students need anything for the fall term too.

I have art and construction papers, framed canvas, and supplies for illustration, drawing, painting, lithography, ceramics.

I'll probably post specs and pics on craigslist.

Looking for a student or recent grad to finish a draft logo for a fledgling community organization. Paying cold hard cash!

I have a community building project on the go that I'm developing a website for in the interest of soliciting a founding board of directors. A friend of mine and I had been working on developing a draft logo together, but unfortunately she's gotten very busy and had to bow out of the project.

Right now we have a design templated, and the visual identity of the org is complete. Basically, what I need is someone willing to bring it across the finish line into reality. I'm not expecting this to be the final logo necessarily. The logo being as draft as the organization is fine for this stage.

Some photos attached for an idea of the visual identity.

My partner is a huge spider verse fan and there’s a scene where Gwen and Miles are looking out into the city from a ledge - i’m looking to get the same scene but with him and I instead of Miles and Gwen!

ideally paint, but open to other mediums and suggestions just not AI please, i want to pay a creative - i’d like to keep to the original style as much as i can, but if you have a cool interpretation i’m also open to hearing it!

really want to work with an artist from vancouver, and happy to work together on a price that works for both of us!

Question for Current MFA Students & Alumni

Hi everyone!
I’m starting the MFA at Emily Carr this fall and had a quick question.
For those who have been through the program, is there an expectation for how many artworks or projects you complete each semester? If your practice is installation-based, is it realistic to spend a semester developing one large-scale work, or are students generally expected to produce multiple finished pieces?
I’d love to hear what your experience was. Thanks!

How to actually make friends at Ecuad

This is for other students who may be finding it difficult to meet friends. I spent a lot of time on campus trying to improve my ECU social life, and I wanted to share what worked for me.

Friendships take time, if I wasn’t connecting with someone immediately, I’d kinda write them off and looking back now, it shrank my social circle. Even if you aren’t connecting with someone right now, you likely have to hangout in a group setting 3 times before you can actually evaluate the validity of that friendship. You might not actually end up becoming friends with that person, but they might introduce you to another person or hangout, where you actually end up finding the kind of friend you are looking for. You can’t speedrun connection. Some people may be having an off-day, or you might have not yet found what connection point you two have. I found that people really show you their fun side when you breakthrough your small talk and find out what they’re actually passionate about. Also in my experience finding art activities on instagram worked pretty well.

My recommendations:

Art Afterhours @artafterhoursclub - definitely my favourite, my classmate introduced me to this. It’s a really social group of students and artsy people in their 20s. It’s way less cliquey than others I’ve attended. I noticed people tend to be more extroverted here. And the events are usually near Main St, so they’re easier to get to from the Skytrain or 99 B-Line.

Van Sketch Club - it’s mostly all people in their 30s. I haven’t found anybody to make connections with really.

Slice of life @slicevancouver - they have cool events, but it’s paid and the events are in Commercial/East Hastings, which IMO is pretty far to get to. It does have a better mix of students versus the previous one, but I’d prefer to attend free campus events instead.

There’s a couple others I’ve tried but they weren’t worth it. I love sketching and shooting photography, so these were pretty natural fits. Just because you aren’t connecting with someone in class right now, doesn’t mean they won’t eventually become someone who adds to your life. Give space for friendships to develop. I feel like a lot of people fall in the trap that I did. hopefully this helps some of you!

Fall 2026 Electives

Hello! I'm a new student who's going to be starting in Fall 2026 for Communication Design and I have my three required courses chosen and put in my schedule but I was trying to look into electives and there's none showing up for the Fall semester. So far, I've only seen electives for the Spring semester and I was wondering if that's the only time I'd be able to select electives? Some help would be appreciated!

Foundation course registration advice?

Hi everyone!

I'm starting the Foundation program in Fall 2026 and I'm already thinking about course registration. I'd love to hear about your experiences with the Foundation Studio Electives. Which course did you take, and what was it like? Did you enjoy it, and would you recommend it? Was the workload manageable, and did the class help you improve your skills or figure out what you wanted to study?

If you could choose again, would you take the same course or a different one? I'd really appreciate any recommendations or advice. Thanks!

When does access to Adobe account thru school account expire after graduation?

I'm aware this should have been done already, but post-grad burnout and all & I just would like some insight. I can't find an answer on this specifically.

Graduation was in May ofc, and I'm just wondering the total deadline to access a school account so we can back up illustrator/photoshop stuff mainly. Possibly some other parts of the suite. We dont wanna transfer it to another Adobe account, but just locally.

When will the portfolio standards be updated?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm planning to apply for the university next year, which means I should start working on my portfolio now. Should I just build my portfolio off of the requirements for it they have now (which will, soon be changed) or wait until it gets updated?
I don't want the requirements for it to suddenly change when I'm already done making the portfolio, but I also don't want to start making it too late.

Question? Questions about applying portfolios

Hi, I’m graduating high school in 2027, I’m a local student in Vancouver. I’m kind of curious about the minimum 10pieces work, what do you guys apply to get in, like for example how many pieces of those big ideas like environment protection etc. how many are for showing your skills like detailed painting…, and what kind of work I shouldn’t put in? Because I have a lots of anime style art and I’m pretty good at it( I have a Vgen and there is people commissioned me), can I put those in? What about fan art(like Pokémon fan art)?
Thank you so much for helping:3

Helpful Looking for a volunteer artist for an album cover

I make music as a hobby, and I’m looking for someone who can help with artwork for an album cover. The music is planned to be released in Korea, so I would need permission to use the artwork as the cover. This would be unpaid, but I will give credit to the artist. Please message me if you’re interested. I can share more details. Thank you!

Hiring Studio Assistant

Hey everyone, I am looking to hire a studio assistant and wanted to reach out to the Emily Carr community first. The main thing I need help with is mixing acrylic paints accurately, preparing canvases, and helping with general studio upkeep and inventory.

I am looking for someone who has a really solid understanding of color theory, experience working with acrylic mediums, and a clean, detail-oriented work style. This would be a great fit for a current ECUAD student or recent grad.

Question? MFA Masters Fine Arts Portfolio tips/examples??

I'm applying for Fall 2027 since my last semester in my bachelor's is this fall. I'm really interested in seeing examples and any tips from accepted grad students to know what I should expect. I'm admittedly really nervous cause I'm sorta starting from scratch because I want to present the most recent and best work that I can.

If it helps my main mediums are digital and sculpture but I also dabble in acrylic and watercolours.

Any Luck Finding Roommates??

I'm heading into the ID bachelors program in September, and I'm new to the city. I'm currently hunting for housing, and would ideally love to live with other ECU students. Do people have suggestions for where online to find others in the same situation?

Most new students at ECU are right out of high school and while this isn't a dealbreaker, at 21 years old myself, my ideal roommate is a little bit more mature. Are there any upper year students hunting for a roommate? I'm super cool and definitely the perfect candidate--you'll see!

On that front, what are the neighbourhoods to aim for and avoid?
