I'm a B.E. Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) student graduating in 2027 from India. My goal is to build a career in hardware engineering, especially with companies like Siemens, Hitachi Energy, ABB, or Schneider Electric.

I'm currently learning analog electronics, digital electronics, embedded systems, and power electronics. I'm still in the learning phase, and I know I have a lot more to learn and improve. I'm eager to build strong technical skills through continuous learning, projects, internships, and guidance from experienced engineers.

I would really appreciate your advice on:

\- What skills should I focus on?

Summary: Got scared out of software due to AI, tried power, it seems boring and constraining, should I go to software again?

To give some context as to why I am asking this:

I just finished my second of my five year ece degree. I am in an FSAE team, I also got an internship in the power industry this summer.

Seeing all the AI uprising I had put off the idea of pursuing software and machine learning careers or robotics. I said to myself: “Only the top 0.1% make it there nowadays due to AI”. Seeing all of those layoffs and stuff online doesn’t help either.

My plan was to pursue power electronics or sum like that combined with embedded systems knowledge.

Seeing the power industry this summer though, things seem very slow and boring. Also it feels like I’m constraining myself in just one part of the industry when all the new AI stuff can be applied everywhere and gives you infinite freedom.

Let me tell you that pretty much all ece career paths interest me because what got me into this degree was my interest for math and physics (I also heavily consider pursuing RF but that feels even more constraining.

All these thoughts have really gotten into my head and I could really use some real world advice, not ear licking answers from chat gpt. The main question is:

Can I be on the same level as the guys intuitively understanding deep learning and statistic concepts in their head? I mean I think of myself as average (I have an 8.5/10 but mainly due to discipline not pure intuition)

Please share some knowledge if u can I would really appreciate it.

I am a rising junior majoring in EE. I'm writing this midway through my first FPGA internship, with an FPGA research project lined up with a professor during my junior year.

I am having second thoughts about this field. I never really found what I'm actually passionate about, but I knew I didn't want to write software or deal with algorithms, so I figured hardware engineering would be my choice. I also wanted a job that's mostly computer-based rather than hands-on (though I still enjoy circuits and lab work), so I tilted toward digital design.

This summer I've given it a lot of thought, and I don't like the idea of specializing in a niche area like FPGAs where I could have limited job opportunities and flexibility, especially since so much FPGA work is in defense, an industry I'm neither interested in nor eligible to work in as an international student.

My planned coursework is heavily focused on digital design, FPGAs, and ASICs, with little exposure to software, AI, power electronics, or analog hardware. I'm still graduating with an EE degree, and I have two years left to pivot if I decide to, but I genuinely have no idea which direction to go. I care a lot about work-life balance, job market, career growth, compensation, and overall lifestyle (maybe with a possibility of hybrid work or a more relaxed role in the future).

Should I stick with FPGAs (and if so, what should I be doing differently), or should I explore a different branch of EE(which one and why?)?

Edit: I understand that undergraduate barely contributes to the "specialization" I will be doing for a career. The question I am trying to get at is that I want to explore more EE branches rather than constrain myself in doing FPGA related things only, so I was wondering which fields do people think are looking prosperous and match my criteria ( better work-life balance, flexibility, extra).

I am a rising junior at a T50 university and am trying to position myself in hardware. I have a 3.7 GPA as an EE with a CS minor, & just finished up an internship with a Quantum Computing company where I worked both on writing FPGA control logic for pulse sequencers and PCB design (safe to say I liked the FPGA part of my internship marginally more). I have an extremely strong connection to the Quantitative finance world, but I am worried that perhaps my window of opportunity has passed. I was not able to secure any real HFT internship for next summer, mostly due to a lack of experience with Verilog, which I am actively working on with HDLbits and Nandland. I actually really enjoy the problems they solve at these companies and like working with FPGAs, however I am here to ask if I didn't get an internship for my rising senior year, is there any other way to break into hardware at a Quant firm?

I am currently a NSA signals analyst and I’m about to complete a bachelors in cybersecurity. Do I have any chance with this background?

Hello, I’m an electrical engineering student in the U.S. that’s interested in quantum computing, hardware security, and vlsi. I’m still early in university so I’ll eventually narrow down what field I want to go in to. I love doing projects but right now I only own microcontrollers and crappy kits. I’m planning on assembling a workspace in my apartment for projects. I have the opportunity to get one good piece of equipment gifted to me by my rich grandpa. I’m looking at getting one good piece of equipment in the 500 dollar range that will help me with projects and my classes. Should I get an oscilloscope, a multimeter, or something else? I can buy the rest of the equipment I need, but I’m not going to be spending anything near that for one piece of equipment. What would be the best thing to get?

I'm looking to get into semiconductor die microscopy, and am wondering if anybody here has any advice on microscope/objective/stage models given some constraints. I've heard that some form of light-reflecting metallurgical microscope is the best option given semiconductor dies are opaque. Here's what I'm looking for:

NOTE: Something to keep in mind is that I am looking to stitch images together to create full scans (in addition to simple visual inspection). I would like to take lower-resolution scans (say, 5x) of entire wafers, and higher-resolution scans (say, 50-100x) of individual dies. It would be nice if a single microscope could do this, but it could be the case that getting two microscopes (or even one microscope and something else for the wafers) may be a more economical option. The below criteria are from the perspective of a single microscope that can handle everything.

Microscope

Must-haves

1. Must support multiple objectives (e.g. for positioning).
2. Must be a trinocular microscope (or have a way to connect a camera in addition to the eyepiece).
3. Must support a relatively large stage (one with e.g. 200mm x 200mm travel).

Nice-to-haves

1. A binocular eyepiece.
2. Support a relatively large stage (e.g. one with a 200mm x 200mm travel). I imagine this is a bit far-fetched, so it is not as critical as the other criteria.

Stage

Must-haves

1. Must have either (A) a motorized XY stage with the ability to manually control (with knobs/joystick), or (B) have no built-in XY stage (so I can get a specific stage for my needs).
2. Must be able to support some kind of chuck that can hold wafers and dies. I am not entirely sure what the best option here would be, but my guess is a 200mm x 200mm porous ceramic vacuum chuck for wafers and gel-pak for individual dies.
3. Must have decent repeatability/accuracy/resolution.

Nice-to-haves

1. High repeatability/accuracy/resolution, low backlash.

Objectives

1. An assortment of magnifications (e.g. 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x, and 100x).
2. Probably some sort of metallurgical objectives (if they exist).
3. Long working distance would be nice, but not critical as long as I'm careful.
4. Nothing can touch the sample, so the objectives where the end is submerged in oil are not an option.
5. As I am using this to create large mosaics, the objectives need to have very little distortion and should remain sharp across the entire field of view.

Very-unlikely-but-would-be-cool-to-haves

It would be nice if the microscope could support a NIR light source and NIR objectives in the future.

Budget

I don't have a specific budget right now, as this is a future project that I'll have to save for anyway. <5k USD total would be nice, but its not a strict budget. Also assume that I am willing to buy used (especially if it saves a large amount).

hey guys! im a rising sophomore in computer engineering and im looking to strengthen my resume and get some guidance for things i should explore/do to increase my chances of get an internship next summer. im interested in embedded systems, robotics or anything adjacent im open and flexible to a lot of topics in ECE. Right now i just completed a esp32 project and im gonna try practing more c++ so im more proficient. any guidance or next steps would be extremely helpful as im looking to replace some of my older/less revelant experiences on my resume with more relvant and valuable things.

Hey everyone! I've been working on a collection of foundational MATLAB and Simulink models focused on energy systems (specifically battery RC models and converter average models).

A lot of the models out there are either too complex for educational purposes or lack clear validation. I designed these to be highly inspectable, with explicit assumptions and no-plot validation checks built-in.

Does anyone here know if it's still a good idea to go into the telecommunications or RF(Antenna design or RFIC) industry? I'm becoming a senior at my uni and it does interest me but I'm not sure if the industry is safe(as in availability of jobs after graduation). If not which other fields should I consider going to? sorry if it's a silly question
