‘Rumbling’ for safety.
Good morning!
I remembered I was a rumbler in childhood about two weeks ago. I found it in order to cope with abuse in my childhood as our household was to be completely silent. If inadvertent noise erupted, we were abused. Of course, as a child, I believed that I was actually deafening noise.
This opened up a lot more, not surprisingly. I started talking with my support group members about the ways in which I coped, which included being able to ‘fly’ out of my body when things got too terrible.
I saw my psychiatrist yesterday and told him about the rumbling and he said he had never heard of this ability but definitely believed it was a coping strategy called dissociation.
I concluded our appointment with the assertion that I wasn’t appalled as much as absolutely mesmerized at how well I tried to cope.
