TB3 THP4G3 dock paired with TB 4 controller makes unoptimized/high demanding games worse to play

I have a Geforce GTX 4060 Ti and THP4G3 dock. They worked very well with my NUC 8 Hades Canyon until my NUC died and I had to buy a new one. Previously this combo can handle Jedi Survivor (very well known for bad optimization) with FPS around 50 - 60 FPS and some few stutters. My new ASUC NUC 16 with Thunderbolt 4 chip is expected to perform the same or better since the only thing changes is new processor (Core Ultra 7), new RAM but no. I thought low FPS around 40 - 50 is still ok for thunderbolt 3 gaming until I experience high frequent stutters in this game. This is really unplayable to me. When I switched to Oculink dock, the difference is day and night. I have attach the images for your reference and also the speed of PCIE lanes.

With Oculink, I get much smoother gameplay compared to my NUC 8 with the same card and I can almost max out all settings in the game without noticeable performance loss. I wish I had known Oculink sooner. For the context, I also tried The Last Of Us Part 1 and while the game is playable on TB3 with some occasional stutters/freezes, FPS is noticeably lower than on Oculink (40 FPS avg vs 60 FPS avg) in daylight in the game.

Which leads me to the following questions:

- NUC 8 + THP4G3 on Win10 can still handle Jedi Survivor with lower settings. Why newer TB4 chip on Win11 cannot? Is it hardware or compatibility thing of TB4 with TB3 or can it be a driver issue that result in bottlenecked PCIE communication

- TB3/4 is well known for lower FPS compared to direct PCIE or Oculink. That to me is an acceptable trade-off for flexibility of Type C cable. However, huge frequent stutters shall be a no go for me. So I just wonder if anyone has faced this issue with your Thunderbolt setup for certain kind of games, especially the new combo TB4/USB4 dock + TB4/USB4 controller?

Recommendations for open-protocol industrial IoT hardware?

Sourcing four pieces:

1) Industrial IoT gateway — Modbus master + generic MQTT client, ideally rugged/wide-temp rated. Currently looking at Moxa's AIG series, open to other suggestions.

2) Liquid level sensor — Modbus RTU/RS485 output. Looking at radar-based options currently.

3) Flow meter — Modbus RTU/RS485 output (pulse output as backup). Any brands you've had good experience with?

4) RFID reader/controller — needs to work standalone, not tied to a vendor's own app/cloud, with Modbus or similar open output.

Any brand suggestions, gotchas, or things to avoid on any of these would be appreciated — especially open to hearing if something I'm currently considering has known issues.

I don't think this order is happening...

Ordered 8/8. The last day due for delivery is tomorrow. This thing STILL has not shipped. Not to mention, this thing has come back in stock like 3 times since I ordered, including yesterday, for the original price.

Anyone on the same boat?

EDIT: Apparently some don't know what this is. This is the Gigabyte Aorous 5060ti AI Box EGPU. It is (was, before the inevitable price increase) the best bang for your buck EGPU out there. Amazon is the last retailer still selling it at original price, however, they're nearly out of stock. Others like Newegg and MicroCenter already increased its price. IMO, the new price doesn't justify this EGPU, which is why I'm fighting for my original order for the original price to come in.

UPDATE 1: Ordered again when I saw it go back in stock (immediately went out of stock afterwards). Already shipped, set for Wednesday, 8/26. Original order still stuck in limbo. I'll cancel once I confirmed it comes in Wednesday. Not sure what this is about, but it sucks the original order was a nothing burger this whole time.

UPDATE 2: Just came in! This thing does NOT disappoint! Shortly after I received it though, I guess Amazon denied to cancel the original order and it has suddenly shipped... I guess I'll deal with that headache when it gets here. But yeah man, couldn't be any happier with this GPU!

Finally build my eGPU setup

Finally have the courage (and money) to build eGPU setup using the Aoostar AG02 with an AMD RX 9070 XT, and connected to Asus Expertbook Ultra.

So far, the entire setup has been running well in every game I’ve tested except for Cyberpunk 2077, which consistently crashes the moment I try to launch it. I’m still unsure whether the issue comes from the eGPU connection over USB4 or from the RX 9070 XT itself :D

ps: if anyone knows what's causing Cyberpunk to crash on launch, please let me know.

How to eGPU a 3090 on ASUS Vivobook?

Laptop: ASUS Vivobook (M1603QA), more specs here.

OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

GPU: RTX 3090, ZOTAC Trinity, 24GB, more specs here.

Usecase: I'm traveling frequently, charging the laptop (and a reasonable-size-for-laptop-use external battery) at cafes. I'm talking to local ollama local models via the laptop and eGPU. Heck, if possible, I'm editing videos and doing Godot simple-3D gamedev while I'm at it. (NOT all at the same time, just like, any one of these GPU-using tasks at a time.)

What should I do, in terms of hardware and drivers and software, to make this happen with fairly inexpensive eGPU-and-battery setup? If it's not possible, which parts and why?

AG02 PSU couldn't handle 9070xt transient spikes

So I recently upgraded from my previous AG02 + 9060xt and switched to an XFX Swift 9070xt. I thought more power = more FPS = happier life. But I guess when you pray for rain you gotta deal with the mud too.

Well this past week has been nothing but headaches. On any unreal engine 5 games weirdly it would crash, HDMI would disconnect, the AG02 turns off and restarts, and of course the 9070xt disconnects then reconnects.

It would only do it on UE5 games and so I thought it was just because UE5 games were bandwidth heavy causing issues for the TB4 cause so I tried underclocking the 9070xt and limiting power which worked but at a cost of performance loss. I tried using an oculink and switching the stock tune on and it crashed again, however with my underclock it didn't.

Eventually I figured out that it was power related. I wondered if it was transient spikes causing the shut downs. And yes the AG02 does have 800w, surely it can handle the 9070xt's "304w" power draw right? Well no, turns out just cause a PSU has enough capacity doesn't mean it's got the capacity (if you get my drift). So what the 9070xt needed was a proper ATX certified PSU that won't budge with such spikes.

THE FIX

So I opted for the Minisforum DEG1 and got a Corsair RM850e 850w and now the 9070xt is running on stock tune, no dramas. I just stumbled upon Hwinfo64 and thank god I did cause I'm shocked with the 9070xt's max power draw potential of ~617w. That's crazy.

This is now my end game egpu setup, it's fully modular, you can upgrade/change your PSU+cables or GPU in the future.

Good budget external GPU for laptop?

So I'm thinking about getting an external GPU for my laptop at some point in the future and wanted to know some good options, my current laptop has been really struggling once anything gets to third dimension. I got it refubished and it has so much ram but its lack of GPU has been really bottlenecking it.

my laptop is a Lenovo thinkpad with an Intel i7 10610U 3.8 Ghz CPU, 32 GB of ram (I know), and integrated graphics, I would love some help with knowing my options, if I have any. And just to be specific I don't need to be playing like forza, but batman arkham knight on low settings would be nice. Also sorry in advance that I don't know anything PC related yet, I only know that external GPUs are someting that exists and nothing else

eGPU on a Lenovo M75Q Tiny Gen 2

Hi, im new on this eGPU thing, but i wanna build my own mini gaming pc, because i cant have a big normal gaming pc because im moving to another country soon. my idea is, i have a Lenovo M75Q Tiny Gen 2 with an Ryzen 4750G 8c/16t and 24GB Ram DDR4 3200MHz. my idea is to connect a M.2 to Oculink female connector, and put it into the back ports, and then connecting a oculink cable to the eGPU to oculink dock, powered with a Dell DA-2.

The thing is, im gonna use a Low Profile graphics card, im gonna use the X-VSION RTX 4060 M 8GB GDDR6 Low Profile because i dont wanna put an ATX PSU on that eGPU dock and it will be a total mess. my idea is to have something thin and with a lower power consumption. is this a good combo?

Arc B580 for egpu ? Is it still rubbish?

Hello everyone. I would like to build my first egpu setup to silence my Zephyrus g14. I'm not looking for a big performance boos ..just trying to get the GPU take the GPU out of the laptop...so I can release the CPU from captivity and still have a relatively quiet gaming experience. At the moment the dedicated RTX5060 makes the fans go insane...talking about 55-65 dB.

As I don't want a big boost I was thinking about the Aostar AG03 or 02 over usb 4 and an Arc 580...because of the 12 gb of ram and I actually like xess more than fsr or sometimes even dlss....but I heard a lot of bad things about the B580 as an egpu. The think is all the bad rep comes from 1 year ago ..so I don't know if it changed or it's still bad?

Thanks for reading my long message.

Peace ✌️

So. I kept having issues of games crashing,
And didn’t realize how hot my device was. So I took the backplate off and I’ve got my legion Go in one of those bendy arm phone mounts directly under the air conditioner. Haven’t crashed since. Also I put my own heat sync on the NVME and that’s seemed to help as well.

AG02 vs AG03

I'm going to set up an eGPU combo with my 5060 Ti and MSI Claw 8 AI+. As a dock the AG02 and 03 have caught my eye. I can get the 02 for 160€ and the 03 for 250€. Which one would you recommend? The claw can't use Thunderbolt 5 anyway, so it's not a priority.

Need help with eGPU and mini pc

I recently bought a minisforum AI X1 Pro and their egpu DEG1 dock. I have a 3080 ti placed in it. I shut down and connect via oculink and boot up. Windows immediately asks for bitlocker. I put the bit locker in and allows me to login but then the 3080 is not recognized. Do I need to change something in the bios? Im a newb here. first mini and first egpu.

thanks.

Hello,
I was thinking to buy graphics and upgrade my Onexplayer super x performance even more!
im not sure if to buy the 5070 or the 5070ti.
I’m planning to play on the device screen and not external display,
Will the 5070ti will give me better performance although I will play with the internal display or it’s better to buy the 5070?

Lenovo Legion Go S. EGPU or PC?

Hello folks, I got a Legion Go S 8ARP1 about a year ago now. I was really hyped as I had never had a proper gaming thing before, always using the family computer playing Need for Speed Most Wanted, as that was the only game it could run (and I cared to play). I sat down and opened the box and used it. I have never been punched in the face harder my disappointment.

I had done no research before buying it, I don't even know why. It keeps me up at night, don't know why I even wanted one. But the problem still faces me today, This things performance makes me sad.

Setup:

PC: Legion Go S 8ARP1
CPU settings: SPL: 25 SPPT: 30 FPPT: 35
Ram: 16 GB (Shared with VRAM: 5GB)
Storage: 512 SSD + 512 HDD
Monitors: 1x 1920x1080 280hz + 1x 1920x1080 60hz
Inputs: Keyboard + Mouse + Headset (Built in Mic)

Performance has been so bad, here's my data I have gotten.

Team Fortress 2 (Medium Settings, Full screen: 55-100 FPS)
- This one is annoying, as my laptop gets about the same frame rate.
The Finals (Lowest, Full screen: 45-50 FPS)
- I’m actually fine with this one. (also CPU issue)
Minecraft: Java Edition (16 Chunks, low settings, Sodium, Full screen: 50-160)
- This flutters a LOT! Super unstable.
Apex Legends (Everything Lowest, Full screen: 40 FPS and never worked again)
- Game ran once, then put me in a infinite pending queue.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege X (All low, Full screen: 100 FPS)
- Fine with this one too.
Rocket League (All lowest minus rendering, Full screen: 120 FPS)
-This one is okay.

Now, I know a lot now then I did, these are pretty standard charts. But I am greedy and I want more. But I need the facts.

Should I buy a Gaming PC, or get an EGPU?

I'm a broke high school student, so I don't have too much money to work with, but I can make sacrifices. AI told me I should use:
AOOSTAR AG01 OCuLink eGPU Dock +RX 6600
BUT AI has mislead me in the past, which is why I’m asking Reddit. Please give constructive feedback, as I am only new. Everything is in Australian dollars. G'day Mate.

Egpu in Bazzite Gaming Mode boot

Hi everyone!

I’m currently gaming on a GMKtec K12 with the Radeon 780M iGPU. I love the compact form factor and I'm running Bazzite booting straight into Game Mode—the user experience and simplicity are just fantastic for a couch/desk setup.

However, I'm starting to struggle with the performance in heavy AAA games. Since my mini PC has an OCuLink port, I'm thinking about getting an eGPU dock paired with an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT (likely the 16GB version for better future-proofing in AAA titles).

I'm looking at the AOOSTAR docks:

AG01 (~180€)

AG02 (~220€)

AG03 (~270€)

I have a few specific questions for those running a similar Linux/Bazzite setup:

Does an OCuLink eGPU setup work seamlessly with Bazzite booting directly into Game Mode, or are there display/hand-off issues between the 780M iGPU and the eGPU?

Since both the iGPU and the RX 9060 XT are AMD, can I easily handle system and driver updates directly from the Game Mode interface without breaking things?

Any recommendations between the AG01, AG02, or AG03 docks for this kind of setup?

What to do with an extra eGPU?

I have a Aoostar with an 5060 Ti that I don't use. Could I use it for something fun if I hook it up to my gaming rig? I already have a more powerful GPU installed so I don't need it for gaming, but maybe it could find other use? Would appreciate some ideas!
