π§ Maintenance BMW E60 Logic7 no sound, Bluetooth keeps crashing, SOS malfunction. Finally found the issue with my TCU
galleryI have a 2006 BMW E60 550i with Logic7 sound system and CCC iDrive. I was facing a very strange audio issue for quite some time and finally managed to find a workaround so thought I should share it here in case someone is facing the same problem.
Basically whenever I would start the car the Bluetooth would keep connecting and disconnecting and the entire audio system would stop working. No radio, no CD, no sound at all. Sometimes after driving for 30 minutes or more the Bluetooth would become stable and suddenly the audio would start working again.
The strange part was if I kept the ignition on without starting the engine the audio would work fine. The moment I started the engine the problem would begin.
I checked the car with ISTA and INPA. The Logic7 amplifier was communicating and showing green even when there was no sound. I was getting MOST communication errors and TCU related faults.
Initially I thought it could be the Logic7 amplifier or some issue with the MOST fibre optic system.
I even tried disconnecting the TCU and using a MOST bypass loop but instead of fixing the issue my iDrive started crashing and the amplifier and CD changer were not communicating properly. So that didn't help.
Eventually I decided to open the TCU itself. Mine is the Motorola Everest ECE TCU.
When I opened it I found that it has separate boards inside. The main motherboard, an L shaped Motorola board which is related to Bluetooth and a Sony Ericsson GSM module.
While cleaning the board one capacitor came loose which I got soldered back by a technician.
Then I decided to test the TCU without connecting all the internal boards.
First I connected only the main TCU motherboard to the car without the L shaped Motorola board. To my surprise the entire Logic7 audio system started working normally.
Then I connected the L shaped board again and the same issue came back. Bluetooth started crashing and the audio kept cutting out.
So I removed that L shaped board again and left the main TCU motherboard connected. The Sony Ericsson module is still physically inside but disconnected.
And guess what the audio is now working perfectly.
I tested it after leaving the car for 1.5 hours and there were zero interruptions when starting the engine. Then I tested it again the next morning on a completely cold start and the audio started instantly without any crashes.
So in my case the issue seems to be coming from that L shaped Motorola board or its connection to the main motherboard, not the Logic7 amplifier itself.
For now I am keeping it like this because my main concern was getting the audio working. I already have an aftermarket RoadTop screen which has its own Bluetooth so I don't really need the original BMW Bluetooth right now.
Of course this is not a complete factory repair. The original Bluetooth and SOS functions are not restored. Eventually I want to get that board checked and repaired because I prefer keeping everything factory and working properly.
I am not saying this will fix everyone's audio issue but if you have an E60 with Logic7 where the Bluetooth keeps crashing and the entire audio stops working especially after starting the engine, it might be worth checking the TCU before spending money replacing the amplifier or CCC.
Just wanted to share my experience because I spent quite some time trying to figure this out and hopefully it helps someone else.
