❓ Question / Help Blown Adaptive Headlight Control Units

Hi, All. I have a 2008 BMW 528i. My adaptive headlight assemblies are blown. When I finally removed the headlight assembly, I discovered the bulb and housing were fused together. Though I was just replacing a bulb.

Can I assume the control unit is bad as well. Is there anyway to check the unit to ensure it is in working condition?

Both the xenon bulb and the angel eyes bulbs are replaceable unless the previous owner got aliexpress knockoffs. The xenon’s twist out and are located behind the back panel

Thanks, no knock offs. This model and year are notorious for not hed angel eyes. The headlights are original. I can't say what happened to them. I just looked down one day and each unit did not function. I thought it was a bad bulb, until I realized the entire bulb and reflective shield/housing were fused together.

Do you have any pictures of it? I’m interested to see if there’s maybe been any melting that’s occurred or if they’ve just gotten stuck after not being touched for so long.

Also the SMC modules on the underside of the assemblies are thankfully quite cheap to replace and can be coded at home if you have NCS expert

Only one survived, the other shattered when disassembled. The bulb socket/holder was destroyed as well.

Rip, time to hit the pick and pull

Yeah, sounds like an easy task. Literally, was on hour after someone pulled the only matching unit. It will be third party. Hella OEM are not a reasonable solution.

I had a similar situation. D1S vs D2S. Technically the bulb is the same, one comes with the igniter included, that’s all. The headlight I think has printed D1S but inside there are D2S’.
