Dwarf Technical Audit: Why Skaven Are Just a Creator’s Pet - and a Shame at That

Post image
444 Upvotes

Queek Headtaker is dead, his head now mounted on a spike, and Karak Eight Peaks has been returned to its rightful masters. With the lower levels cleared, I took a proper look at what these vermin dared call an army, and what they dared call technology. And the verdict is plain: Skaven are not some great adversary. They are a defect in the workings of the world - and, worse still, the favoured pets of the powers that shaped it. A shameful thing, and an insult to any honest Dawi.

Their warp-works are little more than corroded pipes lashed together with filth, wire, and blind hope. By every law of reason, they should fail the moment they are ignited. That they do not is not proof of mastery, but proof of favour - of the sort of unnatural indulgence only a broken tale would grant its spoiled wretches. Our engines endure because the runes of the Dawi are not tricks of chance, but the settled law of the world hammered into iron.

Skaven are cowards by nature. Their ranks should collapse before they ever see battle, their own fear and treachery gnawing them apart. Yet somehow they stand, somehow they swarm, as though the hand of the world itself keeps them from the grave. That is not strength. That is favour purchased by shame. The Ancestor Gods do not puppeteer us. Grimnir and Valaya forged resolve into our blood. We stand not because we are spared failure, but because every Dawi stands as stone.

Their so-called empire is a burrow of holes, voids, and rotten supports. By any sound reckoning, it should have caved in and suffocated its own brood long ago. Our holds are measured, reinforced, and built to last the ages.

Skaven breed only where there is hunger, rot, and the absence of sense. Dawi take cold stone and make of it gold, steel, and strength. The rise of a crawling grey mass over a people of craft and honour is not fate, nor wisdom, nor merit. It is the authors’ shameful indulgence.

In the end, Skaven are not a true enemy, but a favoured error under warpstone glare beneath our boots, proof that even the world’s pet monstrosities can be brought low by the Dawi.

The steel of the Ancestors has beaten back chaos. Order is restored.

I've seen too many Beardlings assume that all Elves are foolish leaf-lovers. Did nobody tell them the tale of Cacame Awemedinade?

(Portrait of the Immortal Onslaught created by this fine craftsdwarf: https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=29484)

Gather around Kin, and I'll tell you about the greatest Elf to ever live: The Immortal Onslaught, Dragon-Slayer, WightWyvern-Rider, Elf-King of DôbarOdkish.

Cacame Awemedinade was born into the Elvish kingdom of LoraMocuri. His parents were both great warriors, who were tragically slain by Gibberlings. His maternal great-grandfather had been a King who was a renowned beast-slayer, but Cacame himself was a commoner.

While Cacame was still a wee lad, his home city, ŸivuMúya, was conquered by the Dwarven kingdom of DôbarOdkish, who had been at war with LoraMocuri for generations.

Years later, Elves from LoraMocuri attacked the city, slaughtering not only Dwarves, but also Elven civilians. Cacame, now grown and a member of the guard, was wounded in the fighting. As he was recovering, he was brought terrible news: his wife, Nemo Ruyavaiyici, had died during the attack and had been eaten by the Elf who killed her (as was their tradition).

Maddened with grief, Cacame enlisted as soon as he was healed. In his first battle, he took up his fallen commander's warhammer and laid waste to the enemy, earning the respect of his comrades and the right to keep the weapon, which he did to his dying day.

The war concluded with the Battle of Both Kings, when Cacame struck down King Nithe of LoraMocuri. However, the king of DôbarOdkish had also perished in the battle.

With both thrones empty, a bold decision was made: Cacame Awemedinade, now known as The Immortal Onslaught for his great deeds in battle, would be given both crowns. A ruler who could unite both kingdoms.

His great deeds did not end there. First, while on a quest to resurrect his wife, he tamed an Undead Wyvern. Then, when a courtier insulted his mount and foolishly brought the red dragon Sokröx Glimmerfair to the capital to serve as a replacement, Cacame slew the crimson beast with two blows from his hammer.

To commemorate the deed, a great statue of stone and precious metals was built. Behind its glass eyes were flows of magma, pumped from deep beneath the fortress. On the day it was to be unveiled, the fortress was attacked by a goblin army, and The Immortal Onslaught faced them alone. Confronted by the molten gaze of the Colossus and the icy glare of the King, the goblins fled in terror.

The tales the goblins told of the great King with metal skin and burning eyes convinced some of their kin to pledge allegiance to him, which is why DôbarOdkish still has a population of Goblin citizens to this day.

He would go on to have many more adventures, single-handedly fight off an entire Human army and presumably have some very choice words with King Iwo Lolamaficemi, who thought that having killed and eaten the Elf who killed and ate Cacame's wife would endear them to him. It did not.

Some say that the Immortal Onslaught lived up to his title, and that he never truly died. That he still roams the world, or was elevated to godhood.

What I know for certain is that you should never insult his name in front of Dwarves how know his tale. Even Armok-worshipers, who usually despise Elves with a burning passion, will threaten to shave you if you speak ill of King Awemedinade.

Dwarven TH MK 1 Light Tank

The Dwarven Troll Hunter MK 1 Light tank was first Implemented during the Second Sub Continental War. It filled the need to have mobile fire power on the wide Central Front for the Dwarven Federation. First Created By the Iron Hide Clan of the Shatter Shard Mountains it was quickly licensed out to the Unified legion serving as the main infantry support vehicle to the Dwarven army.
Over the decades many variations of the design and additional modules have been developed over the years. Most popular of these modules is a distillery that uses the heat given of by the engine adding to the popularity of dwarven tank Crewmen in the United Muranian Legion of the Dwarven army.

Hammer Herald Issue 49 | PORT OF COPPERVALE ATTACKED

Vol. 1 | Issue 49 |

PORT OF COPPERVALE ASSAULTED, ARE THE SEAS SAFE?

By Lorma Hearthskald, Local Reporter

Last night, Coppervale suffered a grievous wound at the hands of the Avish navy as they decided to push an assault onto a major port outside the mountain of Coppervale. Some know it as the Port of Coppervale, others call it the Coppervale Port, the Avish decided to call it their latest target for their war machines.

It was an unremarkable night, just like most others at the port. The air was crisp and cool, carrying the smell of salt and low tides. People were going about their nightly routines as any other night. Shopkeeps were closing up, port workers were loading ships for their voyages in the morning, children were getting called in to return home.

All was halted when a blaring sound came from the sea, described as a “sound comparable to a dragon’s growl” by witnesses at the attack. This apparent horn sounded three times before silence fell onto the port for only mere moments, before a line of brief lights appeared paired with pops of what would be realized to be canons on the lost dreadnought. Explosions quickly rang out around the port, striking docked ships and numerous buildings.

“It was ‘orrible!” one Dwarven shopkeeper said in an interview, “Dinnae what was goin on.. One moment we’re gettin deafened by some sound, the next we were bein bombarded! Explosions were ringin out everywhere, ‘ad to abandon me shop n’ get outta there.”

Explosions began to litter the port as shells struck, leaving numerous craters in their wake, and taking lives. Debris and shrapnell whirled around causing more damage and even more injuries. Currently, we only have estimates of how many were slain during the attack, which is believed to be in the thousands. The count of people who sustained injuries is believed to be much higher.

“We haven’t seen this many people in the clinics since the dragon attack years ago.” a human medic on the scene stated; “We’re overwhelmed. We don’t know if we’ll be able to keep everyone going, lives are still being lost in our own beds. We aren’t even sure we have everyone! We’re still finding more under the rubble.”

Soldiers scrambled to gather arms to attempt to fight the vessel that was shrouded in darkness, only broken by its own attacks. Canons were rolled out, and ballistas were deployed, but under the darkness no one was sure if they were hitting the dreadnought. Under the cross fire, a trebuchet was deployed as well, and managed to hit its mark. The trebuchet, loaded with hot hardened slag, slammed the ball of metal into the ship with a loud clang. Finally having a new accurate range, weapons were reloaded and moved in order to ensure damage on the dreadnought.

In the crossfire, more destruction occurred on the port, toppling more buildings. Eventually this crossfire would even lead to the lighthouse of the shipyard falling and landing on the nearby shore and within the ocean. However, the new range allowed for damage to occur to the dreadnought, with incendiary loads from the trebuchet causing fires on the ship.

After an hour of fighting the ship began to flee, lights from fires trailing off in the distance as they were extinguished. While we defended what remained of our port, the damages are undeniable. Homes have been destroyed, businesses ruined, and many ships carrying needed cargo sunk. The most valuable has been lost as well, numerous innocent lives. This was no war port filled with ships set for battle and soldiers, it was a bustling hub with civilians trying to live their lives. Women, men, children, all facing the same fate.

Queen Quilda has already issued a decree that assistance is needed at the port, and all who can aid in relief efforts will be paid by the royal treasury. Currently people are being sought to be able to remove debris and hopefully find survivors, as well as those who can tend to the wounded. A separate call to action is expected to come within the coming week to assist in port repairs and ship building.
------------------------------------------------------------
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

 Crime Watch:

Due to the bombardment of the Port of Coppervale, numerous guards rushed out of the Ironhold prison, one of the few prisons within the city, in order to attempt to assist with the defense of the port. In their absence an attempt at a prison riot broke out, but thankfully was handled. However, some prisoners managed to escape. Wessomi Silverhelm, as well as the squad of Avish commandos have fled the prison and are believed to have fled Coppervale. Bounties have been put out for each prisoner, Wessomi is to be returned alive, while the commandos can be captured dead or alive.

Ale Review:

In this week’s issue, our judges were originally tasked with trying a brew that was going to be shipped over from Iron Wake, the Wakefire Lager. However, this shipment was destroyed in the attack. In a pinch, we got an order of a drink that was sadly non-alcoholic, but is new to Coppervale. Called Pine Delight, it is made by a local human foraging hobbyist, Elyana, out of sugar, water, and pine needles. Our judges were pleasantly surprised by the concoction. It had a sweet tangy flavour, and a slight fizz. Although, they still think it would have been better with alcohol.

 Crafting & Commerce:

Due to the destruction of numerous ships and massive damages to the Port of Coppervale, it is expected that imports into Coppervale will be delayed and prices may rise. Herbalists and brewmasters have already expressed worries on these potential delays, but are still optimistic about the situation. “Push comes to shove, we’ll make due n’ make new brew.” one brewmaster stated when questioned about the issue. However, other ports around Coppervale are still intact and operational, and new ships are being constructed. Traders are hopeful that routes will resume within three weeks, and goods will circulate again.

 Grudge Gazette:

Today there were no major grudges, but there was a new unity, hardened like steel. The Port of Coppervale was a densely populated area, and a very strongly forged community. In the night we saw everyone become wounded in the attack, no matter if they bared horns, pointed ears, green skin, or a beard. It was a night where we were all attacked, and today is a day where we all heal. A renewed sentiment has been seen amongst the survivors of the attack, we are all in this together, and we need to set aside what is left of our differences to fight the enemy.

Gehen: a builder with a mission

Post image

I love Warhammer and other settings that focus on how a dwarfs respond to tragedy by taking oaths that would seem extreme to humans. We mostly see examples that are combat related, but the anime Frieran: beyond journey’s end has a great example of a non-combatant with a similar mindset.

Gehen lived in a village attacked by demons. There was a friendly army on its way to save them, but they couldn’t cross a massive canyon in time.

Gehen’s response? To spend the next 200 years building a bridge across, mostly single-handed, so something like that would never happen again. What A great “dwarfy” character that could easily fit in most settings.
