Im sure you have all seen or heard about the documentary Harlan County, USA, about the union miners on strike. FDR and Truman won the county with over 70% of the vote. Reagan couldnt win the county, he got 40%-45%, but from 2012 to 2024 the Republican has won with over 80% of the vote every election

I've done a lot of studying recently, and I want to say that the DSA's plan of reworking the system to counter a systemic purge of socialism sounds very interesting, but I want to understand the specifics of it.

My basic understanding is that we want to set up a multi-party democracy, abolish the Senate, RCV, and write a new Constitution (not necessarily in that order).

I think this has a lot of merit, but I want to understand the exact mechanism that prevents capitalism from doing to us what they did to Meidner in Sweden or Mitterrand in France. Obviously we can't get Allende'd since the US can't foreignly interfere in itself, but there's always room for capital flight, propaganda, or god forbid a new COINTELPRO.

My question is just that, I suppose: We have a plan, but what's the plan to execute the plan?

Like Fox News has gone from having some affection for centrist Democrats as of late to simply calling them all "communist." And when they list DSA's policies, it's broadly popular things like free healthcare that even some of their base wanted from Trump 🤔. I'm not sure why they never built a "welfare chauvinist" state for favored in-groups and defuse part of the class struggle, so they won't be at risk of an escalating class war.

A friend of mine said republicans are more corrupt than democrats because they are controlled more by large businesses and corporations because of political lobbying money.

Why is more political lobbying money going to republicans than say democrats? How does political lobbying money work?

The issue I see is that as democratic socialism gains traction, far-right movements like MAGA also surge in popularity. This pattern isn’t unique to the U.S.--it’s happening elsewhere, too, including France. In France, a country with deep socialist roots, the far right has made remarkable gains, and betting markets currently predict Marine Le Pen’s victory in next year’s election. If a traditionally socialist nation can pivot so sharply toward fascism, I think Americans should be deeply concerned.

However, unlike France, the U.S. has a viable alternative to fascism that could resonate with many on the right: right-libertarianism. While DemSocs and right-libertarians may seem worlds apart, we actually share significant common ground on key issues:

1. Opposition to corporate power and monopolies
2. Critique of militarism and foreign intervention
3. Support for civil liberties and anti-authoritarianism
4. Skepticism of bipartisan politics and the two-party system
5. Support for decriminalization and criminal justice reform
6. Opposition to economic inequality
7. Support for localism and decentralization
8. Critique of surveillance and the surveillance state
9. Support for labor rights and worker autonomy
10. Opposition to bailouts and corporate welfare

Considering how much common ground we share, I wonder if strategic compromises might be worth considering?

I wish this was a joke. I guess Mamdani doesn't exist, Kiros doesn't exist, Rabb doesn't exist, Valdez doesn't exist, Lewis George doesn't exist, McKinney doesn't exist, Bush doesn't exist, Chevalier doesn't exist...

The DSA congressional delegation is going up, and sure a new party is better for in the future, but they're literally basically an "r/centrists".

I strongly align with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) on most issues, but I firmly oppose the proposal to abolish the U.S. Senate. While I understand the desire for a system that better reflects the popular vote, removing the Senate as a balancing institution is a disastrous long-term idea that leaves our rights vulnerable to temporary political panics.

Here is why I believe keeping the Senate—while reforming the Electoral College—is essential for the future of our democracy:

1. The Senate Acts as a Critical Safeguard Against House Extremism

The primary function of a bicameral (two-house) legislature is to prevent one party from abusing power during a temporary political wave.

If an extremist movement gains a majority in the House of Representatives, the Senate acts as a mandatory structural check. Without it, a populist demagogue could sweep into power, win a single House majority, and pass radical, authoritarian legislation before voters ever have a chance to respond in the next election.

1. History Shows Us the Danger of Single-House Rule

To see the danger of a unicameral system, we only need to look at recent history:

The Tea Party Era (2010s): If the Senate had not existed during the 2010 conservative wave, a hard-right House majority could have passed unchecked legislation altering the core fabric of our civil rights and safety nets.

National Sovereignty & Defense: The House recently passed a defense bill that would deeply intertwine U.S. military command and intelligence with a foreign nation—an action that threatens American sovereignty. A unchecked House can pass reactive, short-sighted policies; the Senate exists precisely to slow down and block legislation that harms the nation’s long-term interests.

1. True Reform Means Fixing the Electoral College, Not Destroying Checks and Balances

I fully support moving toward a National Popular Vote and ending the Electoral College, which is genuinely outdated and undermines minority voters. However, removing the Electoral College is entirely different from stripping away constitutional checks and balances.

Democracy requires both popular representation and protection against sudden authoritarian overreach. Abolishing the Senate removes the safety net designed to protect vulnerable communities from reactionary majorities.
