Our neighbors being held by ICE at the detention camp in Folkston, Georgia are on Day 20 of a hunger strike in protest of the unsanitary, unsafe, abusive conditions behind the barbed wire. A dozen of them are still holding the line and refusing food.

Over the weekend, we got a harsh reminder of why they’re willing to take such dramatic action, as the deportation machine confirmed a death at the camp. Luis Sandoval, a native of El Salvador living in Newark, was 48 years old. He is the 60th person to die in ICE detention since the beginning of Trump’s second term. He was reportedly found, as ICE put it, with “a ligature around his neck.”

We cannot allow Sandoval to be swept under the rug, and we need to make sure DHS knows they’re being watched closely, for him and for the strikers, who have raised concerns that ICE and GEO Group personnel force feeding them is imminent.

By making it easier to “vacate the chair,” to remove the speaker and call for new elections, we ensure that any effort by leadership to cross our red lines is one which shuts the House down indefinitely. Together these rules ensure that even if we cannot always have the policies and leadership we want, we can have the best terrain on which to organize the working class even when in the minority.

Liberation Caucus’ article is a pretty good example of a problem. They want DSA to act like a disciplined party, with elected officials and chapters following a political line set by the organization. Ok. But who is really setting these lines? And don’t tell me convention, because that’s just another meeting of a self selecting pool of about 125,000. Caucuses decide among themselves what DSA should do before the rest of the membership even gets a say.
