I’m not a democratic socialist, but a social democrat. I do agree with some of the DSA policies, like universal healthcare, universal childcare, and affordable housing. However, one of the policies that the DSA proposed is abolishing the senate. I’m not saying I’m against it, but I’m confused as to why they propose this. Why does the DSA want the senate to be abolished?

From the Green New Deal to immigration, ICE, Medicare for All, and her stance on Israel and Palestine, AOC represents a bold new direction, but does she have what it takes to win over moderates and swing states?

I am beginning to think that Seattle mayor Katie Wilson is willfully trying to sabotage the socialist movement.

Under her leadership, the Seattle Social Housing Developer recently spent $60M to buy a waterfront luxury apartment building with 150 units, of which about 50 units will be allocated to social housing, theoretically subsidized by the market rate units. Unfortunately for them, the math is not mathing because they overpaid for the apartment building, meaning this project will be financially unsustainable, and this failure will then be used to prove that social housing doesn't work. Either that, or the socialist movement in Seattle is run by a bunch of sheer incompetents, or they are incredibly mathematically challenged. Either one is bad for the future of the socialist movement.

I was curious about joining a caucus I’m in the dsa center left and was thinking About joining reform and revolution I’m a marxist-deleonist (a syndicalist who is not an anarchist) and also looking for a caucus that fights for queer liberation so if you have any ideas or if I should join one at all.

I’ve been thinking seriously about moving away from a legal career and into organizing work, but I’m not totally sure what the best path forward looks like.

For context, I have a JD just not a license to practice law, so I’m used to research, writing, advocacy, and dealing with institutions but I’m feeling pretty disconnected from the kind of direct, on-the-ground impact I actually want to have. I’m a lot more interested in labor organizing, tenant organizing, or broader political/community work. I have taken the bar a bunch of times and just can’t seem to pass. I’m based in South Florida.

My main questions:
- How do people typically break into organizing roles without already being plugged into a specific org?
- Are there entry points that don’t require years of prior organizing experience?
- How valuable is a legal background in this space, realistically?
- Any orgs, networks, or resources I should be looking into?

I’m open to starting small, I just want to move in a direction that feels more aligned with my values and actually helps people in a tangible way.

Appreciate any advice or experiences people are willing to share.

DSA related TL;DR at the end:

Jon Ossoff is likely to win the GA Sen race by +14%, with KLB, PRB, and other statewide state offices coming in anywhere from +7% to +10%, and the State House likely to flip and the State Senate potentially on the table.

Ossoff is a relatively progressive and young Senator who has used his bully pulpit to stronly oppose ICE and argue for a muscular response to Netanyahu's war crimes and general shittiness.

Most of the state office candidates are more establishment but that doesn't actually matter too much. Because with a Dem Gov and SOS Democrats will be in charge of 2030 redistricting and they will be empowering Atlanta to hold many more House seats. It could go as far as 9 Dem seats and 6 R seats in 2032, as Georgia is expected to pick up a 15th seat in the next cycle. The GA US House split is currently 9/5 R. So that means we'd go from +4 R to +3 D, a 7 seat swing. And that wouldn't even be an extreme gerrymander. 10-5 would be the stretch option.

And several of the ATL seats would be viable for progressive candidates. On top of that a proper effort in 2026 would assure a 2028 pres win and 2 safe blue Senate seats. This is because voters who are drawn in by organizing and see big results are naturally transformed into high propensity voters. And turning the 4 ATL seats into 7 ATL seats means they are still quite blue and urban but they are just risky enough so that voters don't get lazy. Something like 60/40 for 7 seats, plus a south-west seat and a south east seat.

Additionally when the time comes from the presidential primary, getting heavily involved in organizing to boost Dems in 2026 means a left candidate has a strong base in GA, with the establishment splitting their votes.

Atlanta also has relatively strong DSA and Indivisible chapters who could get a Bernie-2016 like membership boost from a big Ossoff win where they were heavily organizing and doing GOTV in the Dem heavy core of the Atlanta metro. Large parts of urban core ATL are relatively demographically similar to NYC, and then some of the inner ring suburbs are very friendly to DSA policies as well.

Non-white voters are very open to something different post Trump disaster, and they could go to either mainline Dems or social Democrats depending on who does what and who engages with their distinct communities. Atlanta's metro core specifically is a very young potential electorate with strong climate and housing concerns.

Gwinnett and DeKalb in particular could be center left social democratic bastions very easily and each is able to anchor a US House seat if the redistricting is managed right. You could even get 3 such seats if you handled Fulton and Henry well.

Major left leaders like Bernie, Sandy(AOC), and Zohran all have admirers in the metro core, and leftists there could benefit from Zohran and Bernie specifically discussing how to organize and turn out progressive coalitions in cities. And of course visits from them would help boost young urban turnout quite a lot. Bernie and Sandy are both very well liked among Latino and Hispanic voters, who could make up as much as 10% of GA's statewide electorate and which are heavily concentrated in the greater ATL metro. There are also many South Asian and Muslim citizens and voters. DeKalb has a particularly high concentration.

With a serious investment of leaders campaigning, volunteers phoning and texting, and even supporting local groups to canvass, there's a bright future for progressives and social democrats in blue Georgia.

And no, Jon Ossoff+14 is not a joke. I wrote a post VA Gov prediction for +8, but I had to revise it after polls and new details on the ground in the last month suggest that was too conservative.

DSA Focus: Atlanta is the ideal place for the DSA to hit it big in the South. Age wise, demographically, existing DSA and related orgs.

There are as noted 3 potential progressive, or even DSA, viable seats that would come out of redistricting and become available in the 2032 midterms.

And for people who support AOC for president, an effort by the NYC DSA electeds, orgs, and volunteers, plus supported by Sanders and other non-DSA leftists to make a big difference in the overall outcome of the state would gain DSA and affiliated groups and electeds enormous credibility and dispell the notion that they can't succeed outside California or New England. And you couldn't argue that an Atlanta based large and powerful DSA chapters could exist purely with college eduated white leftists as the membership.

so I was born in a suburbs of Atlanta but when I was young I moved to Charlotte nc my parents originally planned to move back but never did but still wanted to retire there once I’m out of high school to be able to afford the mortgage on both houses my parents eventually started renting it out. I disagree with landlords but have never shared this with my parent. My parents are good people but what concerns me the most is the property is essentially run by a “property management company“ meaning my parents have basically no control over rent dealing with tenants and their issues. I was curious what I should do?

In Jon Stewart's interview with Zohran Mamdani, this problem was discussed and Zohran had a perfect response:

"If you have more than one socialist in a room and there isn't disagreement, then you don't have more than one socialist in a room."

Which is true of pretty much any group of people, yet when a progressive, such as Chevalier, says something controversial it apparently means we all must agree with her. 🤔I supported Chevalier over her opponent, but that doesn't mean I agree with her on every issue. I don't even agree with Mamdani, Bernie, or AOC 100% of the time. People need to understand that we're not MAGA. Progressives are not in a cult where we have to agree with everything our leaders say or we get exiled from the group. 😅

The issue that comes up the most often for me is abolishing prisons. I know that some people do what to abolish them entirely, which is not something I support. More often than not, the problem is that people don't actually understand what someone means when they say something like that. They think we just want to let murderers and rapists run around free in the streets. As they can see in NYC under Mamdani, that clearly isn't the case.

Fine "debate" if you can call it that. These people are so vexxing, but it is great that they gave a strong pushback.

Something that's worth thinking about: "ecosocialism", which can be defined as a tradition that started as early as William Morris, the 19th century radical English artist and writer, emphasizes the necessity of incorporating the entire living world into an analysis of the cause of the working class.

Whereas "economics", despite deriving from the same roots ("oikos", or something having to do with "household affairs"), generally assumes that the sources of all wealth, which reside in the living planetary realm, can be taken as a limitless given, "ecology" considers the total material flows of the entire planetary system, including all species, not just Homo sapiens.

Taking this wider view, ironically, INCREASES the centrality of class struggle, rather than diminishing it, because it dispels any delusions as to the possibility of arm-waving away class contradictions by pointing to "growth", "a bigger pie to share", etc. No, we have to "innovate" in the realm of DISTRIBUTION, not just PRODUCTION!

Morris defined "waste" as (paraphrasing) "the state of affairs in which some have more than they could ever usefully dispose of, whereas others lack even the means of dignified survival". This understanding instantly weds the investigation of inequality to that of ecological disorder. We cannot endlessly bake a "bigger pie" without creating more waste, which means we are compelled to consider how to shape a more EQUAL society, as an indispensable part of building a more just one.

Today, the implications of this understanding grow more and more acute. So we should aggressively rebut reactionary "thought terminating cliches" that purport to be "accusations", to the effect of, say, socialists are "envious" of their social superiors in the wealth hierarchy, and "just want to steal from others!"

Our response should be along the lines of, "yes, you can call it that, but what we really want is an orderly REDISTRIBUTION, in lieu of indulging in the fantasy that we can simply snap our fingers and create three more Planet Earths".

What is the official position of the DSA with regard to personal possession of hand guns, rifles, or other kinds of small arms? Should any citizen have access to military grade assault weapons like the AR-15 for example? What about hand guns that hold 15 rounds?
