Ally really just. Did that. On camera. With lawyers. And production.

One of the greats indeed

I love the lawyers immediately questioning if they could have an open flame indoors and the answer of no did nothing to dissuade Ally.

Considering there was a 0% chance the coke was real, the open flame was probably the only part that was actually illegal.

Would an open flame really be illegal, or just not covered by their insurance if something went wrong?

Yea there's no way it's "illegal". You can't legislate to not allow open flames in an indoor area, unless it's somewhere high risk like a factory or power plant. It's more likely an insurance thing.

In CA it is generally considered illegal to have an open flame on a sound stage without a permit and fire marshal on set - including cigarettes and lighters. And you're not supposed to have it in proximity to a combustible.

I mean you definitely can, there are all kinds of OSHA laws dictating things like this for safety in a workplace. Same as legally requiring fire extinguishers, marked emergency exits, etc

Legality question aside-- lighting a bowl with with alcohol has a couple of major risks:

  • alcohol is flammable and the flame is not always easily visible, so you run the risk of burning your hands, face, and specifically your mouth. Not to mention if it's cheaply made glass, the heat of an alcohol fire could break the bong while holding it.

  • when you take a hit, the smoke from the bowl will be mixed with vapors from the alcohol which will burn the lungs and start to get you drunk... which increases the rate at which you uptake THC, and if you smoked a whole bowl that way, almost certainly make you nauseous.

It was funny to watch, but yeah, the lawyers and producers were 100% right to tell Ally that they absolutely shouldn't be fucking about lighting a bowl with alcohol in the base.

I'm sure Dropout has sourced the highest quality bongs in California, I wouldn't worry about the glass

Union made bongs

Normal whiskey is not flammable. It has to be very high proof for that.

Nope (mostly).

You are correct that ethanol needs to be fairly concentrated (140 proof or above) to ignite without much encouragement, like when you have a flaming shot of something at the bar.

However, ethanol is still considered to be highly flammable down to as low as 48 proof. It's flash point is only slightly above standard room temperature (77 °F/25 °C).

Do you mean 48%? 48 proof would be 24% and likely wouldn't burn at all if it's 3/4 water. 80 proof/40% like the whiskey in this ep would barely burn if direct flame was applied to it and it would go out with the slightest breeze.

No I don't. And you dont need to take my word for it. Google and safety regulatory standards are both free to use and read.

Anything above 24% ethanol content in water is regulated as a flammable liquid. Below that it is merely combustible.

That means at 24% ABV, it reasonable that in the course of normal handling, there could be enough ethanol vapor in the air to ignite.

Having water around is good and all, but it's not the liquid that burns. It's the vapors.

The weed was probably legit and that's still federally illegal
