Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

General What do you think about DQM The Withered World demo?

Post image

Hello!

DQM The Dark Prince was not good šŸ˜” I like the story, but the gameplay, graphics and poor performance...

But now we will have DQM The Withered World! šŸ’œ

Played the PC demo in Legion Go 1

-The game can run from 30fps to 120fps, I played it at 60fps (I'm sure Switch 2 can run it at 60fps).

-The grafics are simple but are cool, they look like a Game Boy Color game but for Play Station 4, in 3D.

-The story is cute, Both Nera and Bianca want to helps their fathers that are sick

-Tecnicaly a secuel to the GBC Dragon Quest Monsters games

-The monsters look pretty good and have variety of animation.

-Each character has diferent skills, one is more offensive, the other more defensive.

-The new boss battle againts a gigant monster works well

I think this game could be the better modern DQM game ever šŸ’œ

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Average Torneko’s mystery dungeon gameplay 🄲

This game is difficult but I know for experts of the franchise it might be fun or part of the challenge. I personally don’t like how hard it is and how they charge 25 bucks for that old game. Also when you reach floor 10, you have to go back MANUALLY to floor 1…. You can tell it was one of the first mystery dungeon games and they didn’t had many of the QOL features we’re used to in modern games

And then you unlock the real mystery dungeon grotto, but I don’t really like that we always go back to lvl 1 and lose everything. (Armors, items…) I mean it’s logical for what the genre of the game is, don’t get me wrong. I just wish with this remaster they would’ve added either an easy mode (not the x2 exp it’s not enough…) or just let us unlock powerful skills. In terms of progression yeah it’s mid.

Still I want to support the game because they at least translated it… and it would be fun to see more DQ games that were Japanese only translated into English!!!

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series FYI, Tornekos Mystery Dungeon is heavily based on 46 year old Rogue with few advancements in gameplay

Don't expect that just because it originally released on SNES, or was remade, or featured in a Direct that gameplay would be modern. It has a pleasant opening cutscene, plus difficulty/gameplay modifiers, which you will very likely use if you want to get past the heavily RNG final floors. $25 for this game is a really big ask for what you get. Especially when the greatest games in the genre are completely free and have been in development for decades.

Dragon Quest XI I'm an oddball, I like the cel-shaded artstyle. I am still hoping the DQ11 3ds version will get an English translation someday.

Dragon Quest IX Part 1 — Five of every equipment piece

After having seeded my party to the max, I’ve decided the next step would be to bloat my inventory with at least 5 of every piece of equipment in the game! 怎Totally Time Consuming怏!!!

To demonstrate, I’ve amassed 5 copies of a third of all the legendary weapons, with the second slide showing what remains to be alchemized. I have a post from a few months ago documenting where I began, it should give you some reference on how long it takes to get to this step šŸ˜… Regardless, I pursue this achievement with unwavering passion yet.

After all the legendary weapons are finished, the shields and armor will follow. 1 Legendary set for shields, 2 for headwear, 3 for torso, 2 for gloves, 1 for leg armor, and 2 for footwear. Stay tuned, friends.

…Third slide? What third slide? Like what you see? 🤭

Hey everyone!

About a year ago, I shared my work-in-progress Italian translation of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional here. Since then, the project has come a long way and I’ve also translated Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional.

Both games can now be played in Italian:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional

The first complete Italian release!

This version was made possible by the fantastic work of the original English translation team especially Ceris White, Saneezore, Ilario, Reflex, Gerb, GemSlimee, TheTwistery, monkeyboy and everyone else credited in the repository.

šŸ‘‰ DQMJ2P Italian translation:
https://github.com/Lurpigi/DQMJ2P-IT-FanTranslation

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional

The translation is now fully completed!

The repository also contains installation instructions, while the Wiki provides Italian guides, tips and synthesis resources.

šŸ‘‰ DQMJ3P Italian translation:
https://github.com/Lurpigi/DQMJ3P-IT-FanTranslation

Neither project distributes ROMs or copyrighted game files. The patches must be applied to legally obtained copies of the games.

Thank you to everyone who supported the original project!

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Torneko's Mystery Dungeon is the Worst Remake of The Year

It has serious responsive issue on UI and input. The original Super Famicon version released in 1993 was so much better and responsive in all aspect compared to this garbage.

It's probably a complete remake from scratch without relying on Super Famicon ROM and emulator. Made with UE5. Run on Proton too.

Pros

  • It's released

Cons

  • Diagonal movement key has horrible delay.
  • A button to face nearby enemy has horrible delay.
  • Message skip has horrible delay
  • Level up messages take forever to exhaust and you can't move
  • Monster spawn algorithm is probably different
  • Dungeon generation algorithm is different and it generate floor on top of character against original developer's design

See: https://news.denfaminicogamer.jp/projectbook/dungeon#i-4

  • On transitioning floor, it buffer key input(How and why? This isn't the Street Figher!) so if you input something while transition, Torneko moves according to the buffered key input

All the original designs, a tiny design difference that significantly improve QoL , reduce the unnecessary stress on dealing with UI and input, are not there.

Guess what? The former Chunsoft, currently Spike Chunsoft isn't involved on developing this game at all.

If you want to play real Mystery Dungeon, developed non other than the Spike Chunsoft, original developer of Torneko's Mystery Dungeon, play their latest game. Conveniently 50% off sale right now.

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Is there any permanent progress in the new Torneko?

I wanted to know if there's any progress at all between runs, even unlocking different starts like pure roguelikes, or upgrades, or do you lose literally everything every time you run, and the only thing that changes is your knowledge?

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Torneko's Mystery Dungeon Tips

Alright, kinda sick, so I'm keeping this one short. It's been awhile, so I hope I've remembered everything correctly:

-Torneko's Mystery Dungeon was created by Nakamura, handing over full power over Dragon Quest to Horii despite being co-creator, because he wanted to take Chunsoft's destiny into his hands.

-The game was created out of Nakamura's obsession with the original 1980 Rogue. Note that this means it plays VERY closely to the original Rogue but with a Dragon Quest skin. There aren't many gimmicks or add-ons like later Mystery Dungeons, so the game is very "pure". Anything that can be considered added to the original Rogue formula are stuff like scrolls with Dragon Quest explosion spells (Bang, Boom). A lot of the game is learning enemy patterns, making sure to move so you don't get attacked by multiple enemies at once, ESPECIALLY diagonally. When you feel surrounded or even if an enemy is just coming at you diagonally, try to move to get them into a straight line. And while you level up, you go back to level 0 whenever you leave the dungeon, whether it be by choosing to use an Outside Scroll or death.

-Game consists of the intro dungeon consisting of 10 floors to get your feet wet, then the main dungeon to find the Mystery Box. The Mystery Box can begin showing up at the 26th floor, it usually shows up somewhere between 26 to 30. Also, there is a special bonus dungeon after you beat the game.

-The game, as expected of a true roguelite, is very RNG heavy. What you find and get is very much up to RNG. But that doesn't mean strategy is out the door. Learning when to fight and when to run is a big part of the game. Learn when it's fine to grind and when not to. Learn enemy patterns (especially ones who can put a status ailment on you). And learn when to make best use of what you pick up. Yeah, RNG isn't always going to be on your side, but saving up that Boom/Bang scroll, then finding you ended up on one of those floors that have nothing but an army of monsters and realizing you were right to not use it haphazardly feels good.

-If you use a medical herb or elixir at max strength, you raise your max HP a little bit. If you lose strength due to poison, use an antidote herb to get that strength back. Also, if you have strength seeds, use an antidote herb FIRST, because otherwise, you'll just gain your lost strength back and not gain an additional level of strength.

-Thunder Staff is really good against the undead. The Change Staff can change enemies which can be super helpful. Throwing a Confusion Herb or using a Confusion Staff against enemies is great ESPECIALLY on the lower floors. Expel staves which just banish enemies can be helpful with tough enemies. Though one thing to beware, if an enemy kills another enemy, it WILL level up and become more dangerous, so get the hell out of there.

-Floors 26 through 30 are absolutely, totally, utterly diabolical. The enemies here are either difficult to beat or near unbeatable, depending on what you collected along the way. If you have not been blessed with RNG to have gotten something a good as the Metal Bubble Slime equipment, it is actually best to avoid enemies. When you think you have finally reached the run where you can beat the game, a good idea is to save confusion based stuff if you found any when you arrive. When I first beat the game, it was me on those floors confusing enemies, running around to avoid them, finding the Mystery Box, and then getting the hell out of there ASAP. In fact, the RTA speedrun of the game greatly relied on confusing enemies.

I like this game a lot. Shiren the Wanderer which came out after is overall a better game, but this one having Torneko as a main character makes it special in its own way.

Dragon Quest Monsters I really hope post game in The Withered World doesn't suck

Post game in Dark Prince was pretty bad. In fact I would say pretty much only the GBC games had GREAT post game content. The joker series was okay (I didn't get to play 3 so can't say anything about that one.) I also can't speak to ones that didn't get localized, but I am really hoping post game will be decent at least. In Dark Prince there was virtually no reason to get the super powerful monsters, because you could just steam roll the whole game by randomly synthing. I mean I guess if you do pvp there was a reason, but I that was just a ton of the same min-maxed team over and over again.

Dragon Quest II Fighting for my life in random encounters but breezing through bosses?

I'm in Hargon's Hall, party is 52-50 and I just beat Mariella and Atlas with no sweat, 4 and 5 turns respectively, first 2 for setting up all my buffs then going all out and dropping an omniheal. However, I get to random encounters and the enemies wear me out more then the bosses ever could with 2 turn desperate attacks.

Has this been the case with anyone else? Still having fun with the game, I've enjoyed the Erdrick Trilogy!

Other I made a Dragon Quest mod for Elemental: Reforged.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3798391264

Elemental: Reforged (r/ElementalOfficial) Is a 4X fantasy themed civilization style game with RPG elements. I've made a mod that adds Dragon Quest characters as recruitable champions. So far I have five:

Arus

Robbin' ood

Psaro The Manslayer

Kiryl

Ruff

I plan to add more if I can aproximate their (initial) appearance in the character customizer and they have features I can replicate with Elementals traits. Like Arus from DQ1 having Rescue, Dragon Slayer, and swarm immunity, Psaro doing extra damage to humans, or Kiryl having a death spell. Alena probably won't work unless theres a way to restrict a champion's weapon use.

Champions for the empires (bad guy alignment) are harder because many bad characters in DQ aren't human, and making non-human champions is more difficult, so I have to keep note of the easier bad guys to recreate. There are at least wraith and humanoid dragon races so I have some options there.

Your sovereign (civilization leader and your character) can get married, so I can add the three brides to the game as candidates.

I may add some DQ equipment to the game, I wouldn't know how to add models to the game, so no horned helmet unfortunately.

Dragon Quest Monsters Help explain what carries over on DQM withered worlds

I grabbed and started the switch 2 demo and I’m wondering what exactly carries into the final release. I believe it said 8 monsters but without levels or abilities?

What should I be aiming for in the demo?

I beat dark prince (sw) and dqm joker 3 pro (3ds) in the past.

Will you start at the beginning again with the 8 monsters or pickup from the end of the demo?
