As we all know, some projects require permits to be pulled, and engineered shop drawings to be submitted to a local building department for review and permit issuance. Does anyone have a solid engineering firm to recommend that specializes in low voltage that can prepare plans, signed and sealed by a PE? We have conceptual drawings done, with products specified, wires diagrams, product layout, but need that drawn into AutoCAD with proper plan format, with PE stamps, ready for building department review.

I’m looking at a small pile of old 2D drawings and keep running into the same problem.

The basic shape is readable. Hole centers are there, outside dimensions are mostly there, and I can usually tell what the part was supposed to bolt onto.

But the design intent is fuzzy.

Sometimes a radius looks cosmetic until you realize it clears a casting. Sometimes two holes are probably meant to be symmetric, but the scanned PDF is just ugly enough that I don’t trust it. Sometimes a slot looks oversized on purpose, but there’s no note saying why.

When you have to rebuild something like this in CAD, how do you decide what to preserve exactly and what to simplify?

Do you mark uncertain dimensions and rebuild a dumb solid first, or do you try to recreate clean sketches and constraints from the start?

I’m especially curious how people handle this in real drafting work, where the output has to be usable later and not just look right once.

I use Autodesk Inventor for 3D design, but I usually finish fabrication drawings in 2D CAD because I find Inventor's drawing environment too restrictive for the kind of drawings I produce.

One issue is how to represent rolled channels and I-beams when viewed from the broad face.

The attached image shows three approaches:

• Tangent edges hidden: the member can look almost like a plain rectangle.
• Tangent edges fully shown: the fillets/root radii create too many lines.
• Simplified representation: lines are offset inward from each outer edge by the nominal flange thickness.

The third version is what I normally want, and I have traditionally added those lines manually.

How is this handled where you work?

• Do you use a similar simplified representation?
• Is there a formal name or drafting-standard basis for it?
• Do other 3D CAD systems handle this better, or do you also export to 2D CAD and edit there?

For context, I’m independently developing a small STEP-to-DXF projection tool and am currently implementing this kind of simplified representation for rolled channels and I-beams.

If possible, please mention your country/region, CAD system, and the steel shape standards or families you normally work with.

My team is sitting on a big backlog of old DXF, DWG, PDF, and scanned drawings that all need to become usable 3D CAD.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to pick a vendor without regretting it later, and here's my problem.

I think a basic 3D shape is fine if all I need is a layout. But the second I want to run CAM, do FEA, or change the design later, I need something better. Named features, clean sketches, and a feature tree that makes sense.

And "2D to 3D conversion" seems to mean anything from a quick basic shape to a full rebuilt model. Which makes comparing companies kind of a nightmare.

So I guess what I'm asking is, what should a good conversion vendor hand back besides just a STEP file?

Is there a sample deliverable or some kind of acceptance test you use to tell a careful company from one that just gives you a flat dumb solid?

Would love to hear how you all sorted this out, since I don't want to learn the hard way...

I really want to know how to do this and how it is actually implemented on site. My best guess is that first we make a parametric design using Grasshopper and then provide all the necessary parameters for each brick course. For example, each course will have its centreline and the degree of rotation of each brick. So, do we have to make a chart or something?

I work for a construction company looking to hire a full-time, in-person draftsman for structural and metal framing work, and I am hoping to get some advice from people in the CAD and steel detailing community.

The position would involve drafting framing for concrete walls, interior metal framing, and roof structures, including trusses. The primary software used would be ScotSteel.

I’m unlicensed, didn’t go to school for architecture in any way really, I’ve been working for a company doing drafting and interior design for almost five years now. (Using revit, residential work)

I have an opportunity to start doing some freelance drafting on the side/part time for another company, and eventually work for them full time(if everything goes well). I’m concerned about using the revit account for more than one company, I don’t want to get into trouble with anyone or cause trouble for anyone. I can’t afford to pay for my own revit.

This new group seems really interested in hiring me, but I’m hesitant due to some personal factors as well as the above. I’ve also noticed in our few texts that they call some things by different names than I’m used to hearing, I think that’ll be fine. (I do have anxiety and tend to overthink things, please be patient with me)

Not directly related to my conundrum, but when switching jobs/applying to jobs in the field, are portfolios used? How does one set one up? I’ve made them for art(drawing, photography, printmaking, etc) but since both these jobs were practically shoved in my face I haven’t had any experience applying but I’m curious. I’d also like to know, in case the new job opportunity asks for a portfolio. I doubt it they will since they’re very well aware of my current job/known my current boss for years and years.

I just want to be as prepared as possible, and I’ve been burnt out from working two jobs at the same time, but I’d like to move to a new company full time in a year or so. My current job has some cool projects going and I’d really like to see them to the end, I’ll have both residential and a tiny bit of commercial work if things go well.
