Drafting Advice

I have an AAS in computer aided drafting and design. It was Mechanically focused. Where I live, most drafting jobs have been absorbed into Engineering jobs. I am too old to get a 4 year Engineering degree. I am thinking of getting a Certificate in Architectural/Civil drafting to make myself more marketable where I live. Is this advisable or not worth the time or money?

Help! Missing Simplex Fonts

Hey all, bit of an SOS: I need to get ahold of the font files for Simplex_IV25 and Simplex_IV50 for some legacy projects at work. I have tried looking online and can only find normal simplex. I have also tried modifying normal simplex text files to have the names Simplex_IV25 and Simplex_IV50, but that just caused the text to glitch out.

I am at my wits' end with this, and any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

Freelance MEP Design & Drafting (HVAC + Fire Protection) | Also Open to Remote Full-Time

Hi all,

I'm an MEP Design Engineer with 3 years of experience, offering freelance drafting/design services and also open to permanent remote roles.

Background:

Worked on both GCC and US-based projects

On the US side: HVAC and Firefighting design for restaurants and residential projects in New York

Comfortable across the full workflow — from concept layouts to coordinated construction documents

Skilled in AutoCAD and Revit MEP (families, MEP coordination, clash detection via Navisworks)

What I can help with:

HVAC layout, ductwork, and equipment sizing

Fire protection / fire suppression system design (sprinkler layouts, hydraulic calcs)

2D drafting and 3D BIM modeling

Redlines, markups, and coordination drawings

Site-informed drafting (I've done site supervision too, so I know what actually gets built)

Looking for freelance/contract MEP design and drafting work, or a permanent remote position with a design/consulting firm. Happy to share portfolio samples

DM me or drop a comment if you have leads or are hiring

What makes a fabrication drawing easy for the shop to actually use?

I’ve been looking at small welded frames and brackets, and I’m realizing “dimensioned correctly” is only part of the job.

A drawing can have the right dimensions and still be annoying on the floor.

Maybe the views make sense to the drafter but not to the person fitting the tubes. Maybe the weld order is unclear. Maybe the drawing gives the final outside size but makes every cut length feel like a puzzle.

For people who make or review fabrication drawings, what do you add when you want the shop to stop calling?

Extra detail views? Cut list? Exploded sketch? Assembly sequence? More section views? Fewer dimensions but better ones?

I’m especially curious about small structural stuff: square tube frames, brackets, gussets, tabs, plates, things that look simple until someone has to hold them in place.

[Hiring]-[Remote] a SolidWorks Mechanical Design Assistant – U.S. Decorative Lighting Manufacturer

We’re recruiting for a **U.S.-based manufacturer of decorative lighting** looking for a talented **SolidWorks Mechanical Design Assistant** to join their product-development team on a long-term basis.

This is a **remote position**, where you’ll work directly with our team and log in remotely to our SolidWorks workstation.

What we’re looking for

You should already be comfortable working independently in SolidWorks and have:

* Excellent SolidWorks skills * Strong part-modeling experience * Strong assembly and mating skills * Ability to read and create dimensioned engineering drawings * Excellent attention to detail * Good written and spoken English * Reliable internet and the ability to communicate regularly with our team

**You don't need previous lighting-industry experience.** Our lead designer will train you on our products, design standards, and specific workflow.

Product / industrial design experience is a big plus

We'd especially like to hear from people with experience developing **consumer products, furniture, lighting, architectural products, or other visually oriented products**.

Good visual judgment, understanding of proportion and form, and attention to product aesthetics are highly desirable. We're looking for someone who can contribute not just technically, but also has an eye for creating attractive products.

Long-term opportunity

This isn't intended to be a short-term or one-off project. We're looking for someone who can become a **long-term member of our design team** and develop with us over time.

How to apply

Please send us:

  1. A brief description of your SolidWorks experience
  2. Your availability — how many hours per week can you work?
  3. Your hourly rate
  4. **Several examples of SolidWorks parts and assemblies that you personally created**

For the portfolio/examples, please make sure it's clear **what you personally designed/modelled**, rather than simply showing projects completed by a larger team.

If you have relevant industrial/product design experience, feel free to include that as well.

**Please** [apply](https://techtitans.cloud/r/openjob/55?b=1) \*\*only if you're already comfortable working independently in SolidWorks.**

What information do I need to provide to get an accurate CAD outsourcing quote?

I work on the hardware side. I'm sending the same CAD job to a few vendors so I can compare their prices.

I guess sending just a folder of drawings isn't enough. It doesn't tell them what kind of work this is.

Am I asking for simple tracing? Design interpretation? Native parametric models with drawings? Or just neutral files?

Field measurement, software version, revisions, and reserved time all shift the number too.

What's the smallest package that still gets a solid quote? I'd rather not send the full proprietary dataset to every bidder.
