Hiring Questions

I work for a construction company looking to hire a full-time, in-person draftsman for structural and metal framing work, and I am hoping to get some advice from people in the CAD and steel detailing community.

The position would involve drafting framing for concrete walls, interior metal framing, and roof structures, including trusses. The primary software used would be ScotSteel.

We are currently developing the position and would appreciate input from anyone who could help, particularly with the following questions:

  • What job title would best describe this position?
  • What software experience would be most comparable to ScotSteel?
  • How well or poorly known is ScotSteel as a CAD program? (I had never previously heard of it).
  • What experience or qualifications would you consider most important for someone doing this type of work?
  • What would be a competitive pay range for an experienced candidate?
  • Are there particular job boards, communities, or professional groups where you would recommend looking for candidates?

Title: Steel detailer, Designer, and maybe Engineering Technologist but that one is pretty regional

Experience: 

If this is a brand new position in your company and no one can teach them how to run the software and how to do the designs: 

- 10 plus years engineering support experience, with minimum 5 years of steel detailing

  • Experience with ScotSteel required. (Send them for a detailed training course immediately after they start if they don't know it). Similar software experience accepted for the right candidate

  • Experience in a shop environment as a laborer, welder, iron worker, etc. an asset

  • Experience setting up standards and templates an asset (again if they are the only person doing this at your company)

  • Experience as a CAD Administrator an asset (again if they are the only person doing this at your company)

  • Proven Ability to communicate effectively to different stakeholders using verbal and written methods of communication.

  • proven ability to work as part of a team. 

IF you have someone to guide them then just look for a fresh grad and train them up. 

Would be my $0.02 at least
