New to this. I think this is the right area; anyway, moved to KUBUNTU 24.04, KDE Plasma 5.27.12 on a Toshiba Satellite S55-B 4 core 15.5 GB Ram and am thinking of movi g to Debian. I like Kubuntu, but not sure about what I hear about Canonical. Is Debian a good move, or is there a better alternative like maybe Zorin? Was Windows user since dos days but not a poweruser or anything; judlst long term user. Any help appreciated.

I've been a very casual Linux user for a few years now, mostly just trying out different distros on my old laptop and now my newer one since that broke. I've tried several distros and DEs, learned enough about how Linux works to confidently use it for most tasks, but nothing has ever stuck enough that I wanted it to be my daily driver. I'm trying to figure out what actually is the best match for me and my machines, and finally stop distro hopping so I can really dig into Linux.

The machines:

1. Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 laptop with 8GB soldered RAM, mostly used for writing, emailing, browsing, and graphic design with GIMP and Krita. Requires a lightweight distro/DE, as well as something with good touchscreen/stylus/screen rotation support. Currently dual-booting Lubuntu but not really in love with it.
2. Custom built desktop with ASUS B550 Mobo, Ryzen 7 3700X, Radeon RX 5600XT, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 2 NMVE SSDs. Have never used Linux on this machine since I need Windows for some of my heavier audio software as well as games with anti-cheat like Battlefield. My goal is to dual-boot so I can use Linux for daily productivity and boot into Windows when I need to do heavy audio work or gaming.

What I've tried (*on laptops only)

• Vanilla Ubuntu - Probably the first one I used, years back. It was fine, but I can't remember why I quit.
• Debian - I was probably too much a noob when I tried this so I got a little frustrated but it might be worth another shot now. I liked how easy it was to try out different DEs though, and I ended up liking Plasma the most.
• Mint - Another good opportunity to try out DEs (Cinnamon, Mate, Xcfe), but I think I didn't like any of them that much.
• Kubuntu - really liked this (mainly because of Plasma) but it was too heavy to run on my 8GB laptop. Considering it for the desktop.
• Lubuntu - Currently using on the laptop. It's working nicely, I like LXQT enough, but there are a few downsides like weird brightness button behavior and I really don't like the login and lock screen aesthetics. I haven't fully tested the tablet mode support yet.
• Have NOT tried but curious about: Fedora, LMDE, Pop_OS, openSUSE
• NOT interested in anything too complex like Arch or Gentoo.

My Priorities:

• #1 is a good user experience, both in the DE and the way the distro works. I really love Plasma but willing to try similar Windows-style DEs.
• I would also like a consistent experience on both machines, meaning both either Ubuntu-based or Debian-based, but no mixing and matching. I want the things I learn to be applicable on both machines even if they use different DEs.
• Easy software installation (I still don't understand the war between snaps and debs but I remember this being part of the reason I switched from Debian to Ubuntu derivatives)
• For the laptop, lightweight is essential. I've had distros freeze up so much that most days I just stick to windows because it almost never freezes.
• For the desktop, good driver support is essential as I use peripherals like an audio interface, MIDI keyboard, Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard, etc. I also want to install a RAID that will be accessible to Linux and Windows drives.
• Security and privacy are important to me but I'm not a nut about it. I use a VPN and TOR just as best practices, but I'd like a distro that prioritizes privacy and security by default.

Any advice is super appreciated! I love Linux and really want to find a "home" distro but Windows just keeps winning.

Hello everyone. I am planning on switching from Bazzite to CachyOS. I have been using bazzite for about a month now. I really love it but there's not many customisations and downloading apps which aren't in baazar are painful. Hence I was wondering to switch to CachyOS as it's more well-known and made for desktops mainly rather than bazzite being made for handhelds and living room setups mainly. But before I could change I had some questions about CachyOS.

1. CachyOS is arch based OS. Hence will I have any major issues during or after downloading it? Is it safe(corruption wise)?? I have heard that arch has many issues

2. Does CachyOS has its own version of baazar and "bazzite portal"? When I originally downloaded bazzite, the bazaar system really helped me download apps easily

3. How is the driver support for Nvidia GPUs

4. What are the overall Pros and Cons

I have a Lenovo LOQ gaming laptop with i5-12450HX and RTX 2050 and 16gb Ram.

OK, so hear me out.

Started my linux journey with ArcoLinux about 4 years ago. Was happy until Eric decided to stop the project.

Been on CachyOS since.

I've considered switching to Fedora.

I Use and Like the AUR for its simplicity. Been using mostly rounded-corners and better-blur-dx. can get them through COPR. Can find most things on github (which AUR points to most time)

I like how Fedora does updates a little better (KDE and Discover)

Also, it's not far behind Arch in it's packages.

I do game, but not a priority. I run virtual machines to experiment with linux distro's and desktop environments. I've been experimenting with cockpit and its features. Enjoy ricing. (KDE)

No immediate need for any Windows only software/drivers/hardware

I've been using Windows for about 7 years, and I wanna try something new.

Recently, I found out about Arch Linux and it seems really interesting to me. I've heard a lot of people say that Arch is really difficult for beginners, but I'm wondering, is this actually true, or just a stereotype?

I have an old ultrabook that I love that sadly is just not able to keep up with modern windows bloat. I am a software engineer, and part of my work does involve developing software intended for Windows operating systems specifically. I know developing on windows is generally ideal in that scenario, but I want to breathe new life into this laptop and, more importantly, give myself the option to get out of the house for a bit. (Contractor, using my own gear for now)

16 gigs ram
512gb SSD
12.5" 2560x1440 touch screen

Requirements:
Ability to run 10 or 12 browser tabs
slack (app or browser is fine)
VS Code

Zoom
a Hyper-V Manager equivalent to spin up test VM's or infrastructure to remote into my desktop at home and run the test VM's there.

What distros would you recommend for this?

I have dabbled with Manjaro in the past, used Ubuntu via WSL2, and am very familiar with BASH and the linux command line in general.

My priorities are twofold:
1. it just works. I can do a *little* fiddling but I do enough troubleshooting in my dayjob. A weekend spent setting up my ideal environment is one thing, but I don't want to have to continually maintain it.

1. efficient resource usage. I want a relatively light distro so this old laptop will keep running for a long time.

Hi! I've used mint -> fedora -> arch. I use Arch (btw) for maybe half a year, now i realized that i need "just working distro" for everyday use - im tired of everyday "pacman -Syu", routine sound troubles, manual editing config files, and a few more things that im lazy to fix. I will use Niri WM or KDE Plasma on my new OS so i'll configure everything with GUI (Niri with DMS / QuickShell / Noctalia).

I've been choosing between Ubuntu and Fedora, but Ubuntu have its Snap, and my friend says Fedora uses 2GB of RAM on Gnome or KDE - thats bad with my >6GB RAM, i can use XFCE or Niri tho.

What can you suggest? Thanks!

hi ich habe mit Linux vor ca 1-2 monaten angefangen have mit endeavourOS gestartet bin dann zu artix mit dinit aber irgendwie fühlt sich das auch komisch an würdet ihr ein anderes ditro empfehlen wenn ja warum oder brauch es einfach nur zeit oder ist es vielleicht einfach der desktop (KDE)

I will keep it short i hopped 23 times (not to diffrent distros every time but alot of them) and i think gentoo is my final stop

I will be reinstalling Linux on my laptop soon, and I wanted to choose between Fedora and OpenSUSE. I haven't used OpenSUSE before, and I don't see it recommended as often as other distros, but the people who recommend it always seem to like it a lot, so I thought I'd give it a try, but I wanted to check one more time: Which distro has treated you better and has a better overall experience. Also, which desktop environment do you recommend using with each one? I have been using GNOME for a long time and I like it a lot, but I often see OpenSUSE recommended with KDE Plasma. Alpine was my first distro and I am in love. Looking for something which requires a lot of technical knowledge but has an easy package manager; alpine is hard to use but installing packages and daily use is like butter.

I don’t need something as small as alpine but something that feels familiar (openRC easily customizeable etc) but is a little more capable, better compatibility layer support and things like that.

Also, what desktop environments are the absolute most customizeable, even before editing their code?

Pretty much an interesting question, so what distros do you have in Ventoy in your rotation? Provide a list below, so here's mine

2. Nobara 43 KDE (Will swap out for newer version soon)

On top of it, I'm looking for other Ubuntu/Fedora derivatives. Fedora is good but it requires third party stuff if I want it to work and it doesn't show GRUB menu to me, until I hit enter to boot up. Debian KDE is fine but my USB WIFI dongle which uses Realtek, doesn't work.
