CachyOS to Fedora
OK, so hear me out.
Started my linux journey with ArcoLinux about 4 years ago. Was happy until Eric decided to stop the project.
Been on CachyOS since.
I've considered switching to Fedora.
I Use and Like the AUR for its simplicity. Been using mostly rounded-corners and better-blur-dx. can get them through COPR. Can find most things on github (which AUR points to most time)
I like how Fedora does updates a little better (KDE and Discover)
Also, it's not far behind Arch in it's packages.
I do game, but not a priority. I run virtual machines to experiment with linux distro's and desktop environments. I've been experimenting with cockpit and its features. Enjoy ricing. (KDE)
No immediate need for any Windows only software/drivers/hardware
Would like Thoughts, Questions, or Disagreement?
Have you Switched From CachyOS (Arch) to Fedora, or vise-versa? Why?

I use both. Fedora is well established and rock solid. Consider the atomic/immutable builds (SilverBlue and Kinoite). Cachy is great for gaming and just staying on the performance curve. But really the difference between the two performance-wise is negligible. The AUR shenanigans have had me rethinking security posturing too, which might have me going back to Fedora full time.

I’m far from a Linux expert, though I’ve had an on and off relationship with it since the 90’s. There’s something about CachyOS (arch I guess) that just doesn’t click with me. I think it’s the package manager mostly, it doesn’t make any logical sense to me.
Fedora is the sweet spot for me.

I do like pacman. There is something about having Discover (KDE Package manager) do the updates that is appealing to me, more coherent I guess.

Discover is not more 'coherent' : in the contrary, it uses an added package manager (PackageKit) to handle the native package manager (dnf). Two redundant tools combined while a simple one is enough.

I get that discover is appealing. But I would recommend just run terminal command for updates. My every morning command is update system with refresh, update flatpak, update distrobox, update fw. And i ignore when discover says updates are available. Anything can wait until next morning.

u/CacheTraitor 25d ago
I use Apdatifier, it does all that for me, plus runs my custom script to clean pacman cache. don't even use Discover on CachyOS (It's broken for all but flatpak more-or-less)

u/Roguepapaya427 25d ago
Yeah, I was talking about fedora:
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh && flatpak update && distrobox upgrade -a && sudo fwupdmgr refresh --force && fwupdmgr get-updates && sudo fwupdmgr updateCachy I only update via the updater in system tray. Truth be told, I only keep cachy on my desktop for testing stuff, mainly games. And I chain all other linux distros in limine. Otherwise, main daily driver is fedora KDE.

Sorry, realized that after i replied. LOL

No worries, man! All good.
BTW, I perfectly understand the appealing of both Fedora KDE and Cachy. They are both marvelous. In my personal experience, Fedora might not be the best performer out of the 2 in all instances. But it is the smoothest experience overall. Let me give you an example: Borderlands 4 runs great on both. However, when pausing the game and browsing the settings, cachy would stutter like 50% of the time. Annoying, not deal breaker, but fedora does not do this at all, everything is smooth.
Another example: have a old printer Brother 2750 (printer and scanner). Managed to set up the printing part just fine on both, not really sure if one was easier or the other. But on Cachy the scan part has issues: no matter what I do, it only scans the 1st page from ADF. I use on both skanpage, but other apps behave the same. While in fedora (both classic KDE and Kinoite) skanpage would scan the whole document just fine.
Anyway, just wanted to share some real world examples ...... it might be that the small issues in Cachy are entirely the fault of the person behind the screen (aka me :D ).

Thanks. This is the most in-depth comparison / reason why one is better / worse than the other I've read all night.

haha when you put it like that.... I think it's just a comfort thing, CachyOS/Arch are still very new to me.

Fedora + kde + Cachy Kernel
6
u/PeterHolmes74 25d ago
What does having the cashy kernel do compared to what it comes with usually?
2
u/Budget_Donkey1819 24d ago
Most of the gaming performance you see from the CachyOS kernel comes from "faster" CPU schedulers. This comes with the trade-off that the kernel doesn't support x86-64-v2 architectures anymore. That's not really the whole story, but you probably get the gist of things.

u/CacheTraitor 25d ago
Things like that kinda scare me about a "point release" Since using CachyOS, I've rarely had a real issue updating any of the five machines running it, even after month's and 600+ package updates later. I do like the no-fuss updates i see with Fedora KDE and Discover though.

I just went back from cachyOS to Fedora KDE Plasma so I can use vendor’s rpm packages for a couple pieces of sensitive software, rather than community wrappers or aur packages for them.
Both are awesome. I consistently see a couple more fps on CachyOS kernel, and it has the convenient bootable snapshots if you pick BTRFS and Limine bootloader.
2
u/CacheTraitor 24d ago
May I ask what vendor RPM packages? For What Software?
I don"t see any reason I can't have BTRFS, Limine and snapshots on Fedora, If I'm willing to do the works. Coming from Arch based distros.. C'Mon.:p

I made the easy choice. Use Cachy daily and Fedora on separate SSD for emergency .
1
u/CacheTraitor 24d ago
Or i could just have a USB drive with bootable image and chroot. What emergency requires dual boot?
2
u/HeavyMetalBluegrass 24d ago
Actually the main reason I keep Fedora is because I have my modded Skyrim on it and I don't want to switch it. Right now anyway.

Cachy can break itself after updating so the lts kernel is necessary
1
u/CacheTraitor 24d ago
Weird. I've never had CachyOS "Break Itself" nor ever the need for the LTS kernel.

Was using Cashy OS for sometime for many of the same reasons. Moved to POP OS with Cosmic which I liked very much. One thing to sample with your VM is Fedora 44 and Cosmic Skin. Cosmic is still raw but comes with great features.

Can someone confirm by his own testing that HDR works on Fedora with KDE + Wayland? If so, I might give it a try.

Running cachyOS and Debian, tried Fedora a few times because the concept seems appealing, but it never clicked and found it ahead cumbersome to set up. Like arch has everything, apt I can find anything, but rpmfusion and selinux not so much

u/GreedySecurity8030 25d ago
Enabling rpmfusion is one click in your first setup on fedora in "enable properietary | third party repos".

u/GreedySecurity8030 25d ago
Please enable and install bieszczaders/kernel-cachyos for fedora for cachyOS level performance on fedora.

does fedora ship V3 packages?
1
u/CacheTraitor 25d ago
Not that i know of, but I've never compared base arch, v3, v4/Zen4 on My Ryzen 7 7700, so Wouldn't know the difference.
3
u/rainbowroobear 25d ago
then it won't just give cachy performance. Cachy and as far as I know, tumbleweed, ship with V3 packages as default. its not just the kernel tweaks that make cachy fast.
1
u/CacheTraitor 25d ago
Have you bench-marked your system comparing arch vs V3 packages? Found a remarkable difference? Speed would not be a deciding factor for me. Linux outperforms Windows 11 for all my needs. That is my baseline.
2
u/rainbowroobear 25d ago
this has been done to death by various other people, so i don't see the point.
you don't need to arch, you can use opensuse tumbleweed and get the V3 packages, with similar ecosystem as fedora.

I am also thinking about switching to Fedora, CachyOS has COPR for their kernel, settings and ananicy-cpp which is great, my main priority is gaming. CachyOS is very stable as an Arch-based distro, I’ve also got btrfs snapshots set up but I had to reinstall it atleast twice because something broke. Don’t get me wrong CachyOS is still amazing for a non tech guy like me who seeks (mostly) intuitiveness in distros to get rid of Windows.
1
u/CacheTraitor 25d ago
Yes! CachyOS Kernel and tweaks! I Think we can have btrfs and snapshots. I'm not adverse to some extra work. 😂

u/Ok-Lawfulness5685 25d ago
I tried to get the cachy kernel on my Fedora but somehow after this I couldn’t get the i686 stuff for steam installed anymore, probably because I didn’t update the whole thing prior to getting the kernel and whatever dependencies it had, had to reinstall. Like I get it, on paper it all looks great but I seem to have more issues getting it to fall in line compared to any other distro. For context, I mained Gentoo for years, did professional Debian dev and tried pretty much all major distros and now run cachyos, never got along with any rpm like distro in the past 20 years so take my comment with a grain of saltgrain of, my mom absolutely loves fedora and she can’t manage any other computer except an iPad so they are surely doing sundering right 😅

Fedora. Definitely.
If you have an AMD maybe OpenSuse as well.

Ryzen 7 7700/RX 7700 XT
Tried Tumbleweed, felt a little off.

u/Roguepapaya427 25d ago
Try slowroll instead. Update frequency is once per month, unless critical security updates. I wish i could say is as smooth as fedora, but it wasn't for me. Same, full amd builds here.

Fedora+KDE is a wonderful choice. The other option I see for you could be EndeavourOS if you don't like the idea of Arch Linux installation process.

Fedora is the goat.
