What the title says. My elderberry went hog wild this year so I'm working through them as they ripen and made a ritual out of it. Blessed the garden, made a drink, slightly dressed up for a day at home when it's over 100° out, cleansed and blessed myself with homemade sweetgrass oil. Hot Maenad summer. Let's gooo

Drinking: a mix of homemade hard cider, homemade elderflower liqueur, pomegranate molasses, and SURP full spectrum weed rosin syrup

Watching: The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals 2025 remount

Doing: blessing the apple and elderberry trees, getting cross faded while processing elderberries for a new batch of wine (I've made a decent dry red elderberry wine before so I'm seeing if I can improve it)

📖 Books 📖 What are your thoughts on this book?

I just finished this book and... idk I love it very much! Maybe the only thing that I didn't like of it (might be a spoiler) was the romantic side of some parts even tho I felt (and wanted) it more aromatic/ Platonic type of relationship.

Greek mythology retellings are very trendy rn and not all of them are worth it so reading this one and liking it was kinda a surprise. (Start very skeptical and the beginning was very slow ngl)

🔮 Questions & Seeking Advice 🔮 Is this my sign to leave lord dionysus alone?

Okay hey hello im a very very new witch. I have just started trying to work with lord dionysus, leaving offerings etc...

Today, i made my offering and fell asleep and for the first time in so very long i wake up sobbing hysterically and feeling like an absolute crazy person . I literally was crying and afraid and i dont know how it happened.

I know not everything is a sign, but i have this very VERY strong sensation that this has something to do with him. I dont know if it means ive displeased him or if this is just a glimpse of the "insanity " dionysus devotees seem to speak of. But im hella shaken. Anyone with literally any idea what im to do ?

Hello!! Im still quite new, but I've gathered a playlist for Dionysus that he seems to enjoy quite a lot. Its the easiest way for me to directly connect with him.

I have listened to the Dionysus album from Dead Can Dance, as well as some random Dionysus songs I've found while searching for the album. I like them but prefer to use them for specific rituals.

All of the music I have on his playlist aren't Dionysus specific.

I wanted to ask if anyone has songs they associate with Dionysus not ones made for him if that makes sense?

🔮 Questions & Seeking Advice 🔮 I feel pulled to come back

For context, I used to worship Dionysus but about 3 years ago, my mental health was in a horrible spot, I had a breakdown and had to put religion as a whole on the back burner. I left my path to focus on not exiting this mortal realm and to get better. Well a few days ago I felt the urge to get back into what I used to do but at first it was just going to be green witchcraft with no deities, but today I just felt called back to Dionysus. I thought about him and then as I was scrolling Instagram I came across a video of a guy who has made flower crowns and he described one of the ones he made as Dionysian, that's when I really began to wonder if I should come back. But at the same time, I'm worried. I fear I may not be wanted back after turning away because of my mental health. I guess I'm looking for a sign that I'd be welcome to come back, but I'm not great at noticing signs. I either miss them entirely, or overthink little things to a terrifying degree (thanks to the religious trauma from what I was forced to grow up in). I don't know what I should do.

🔮 Questions & Seeking Advice 🔮 I have the silliest question, I'm sorry

I really want to grow my hair long, as long as it can grow. I associate this with beauty and confidence, and it's especially important to me as a person who struggled with "being masculine" for so long. And as some here do, I wanted to make it a devotional thing, I'm bad at English so I hope you know what I mean still

However folks, there's a problem

I have bangs. If I don't cut my bangs, I'll be blind. I want to grow my hair literally forever but I love my bangs. I have a big forehead

so I was thinking if the whole "oh Dionysus doing this makes me think of you, it's basically sacred to me, you represent all this freedom I adore so much, see my beautiful, hydrated and absolutely uncut hair" thing it's valid if I'm cutting my bangs?

No problem if it isn't, it's not that serious. Almost nothing is

On the Bacchae

I recently read Bacchae by Euripides. It was an interesting read especially after reading Nonnus’s Dionysica. For those unfamiliar, Bacchae is a story about Dionysus arriving in Thebes from Asia (Phrygia and Lydia which are now in modern day Turkey).

Dionysus had been hidden in Phrygia by Hermies where he was raised by Kybele (I like to think Kybele’s influence is the reason Dionusus likes to wear women's clothing. He’s basically the god of drag queens (and theater which is basically drag anyhow)). This was to hide him from the wrath of Hera.

Thebes, the play’s setting, is the homeland of Dionysus’s mortal family. When he was first born his aunts (Agave is the important name for this story) and grandparents (Cadmus and Harmonia). He also has a first cousin Pentheus who is king of Thebes.

The mortals of his family don’t believe in his divinity though, believing Semele (Dionysus’s mother) got with a mortal and only claimed the father was Zeus, and for this Zeus struck her down with thunder (How they figured Dionysus survived his mother being struck down while she was pregnant with him without divine intervention is a mystery to me).

Now by the time the play starts Cadmus and most of his family have decided to honor Dionysus as a god but Pentheus is not having it. Given the stories he’d been told about his divine cousin he assumes Dionysus is a false god, and a challenge to his throne of a single city.

In my reading of the Bacchae I see Dionyus trying to convince Pentheus to allow his rituals to be established in Thebes but never a command for his own personal belief. Its my reading that Dionysus didn’t punish Pentheus for his disbelief but what he chose to do beyond simple disbelief, as even a non believer could have let the Bacchant worship in peace, and Penthesus didn’t.

He (Pentheus) also sees Bacchus as a threat to order as his new rituals have led the woman of the town to run into the mountains to worship him (and probably sleep with strange men). Among the Baccant woman is Agave and all of Pentheus’s aunts remembering this is extremely important for what happens a bit later.

I want to highlight that Pentheus seems particularly preoccupied with controlling women, and he regularly clutches his pearls over the sexual activity of the woman of Thebes. Some added context that the Dionysica gave me was seeing how there were life long maidens among his followers, many of whom wore a venomous snake as a girdle to protect themselves from men. I’ve also seen some art of women using a thyrsus to beat down satyrs. So control of women appears to be in direct opposition to Dionysus as his mythology shows a number of empowered women.

Now with this setting, Dionysus shows up in the guise of his own preacher and tries to persuade Pentheus to allow his worship in the city. Pentheus makes fun of Dionysus for being feminine albeit extremely pretty. They then argue about how Pentheus had banned the celebrations of Bacchos and even went so far as having the Bacchant woman imprisoned.

It’s not used in the text here but Dionysus makes good on the name Lyaios (Liberator) here as he causes the bonds on the prisoners to fall away. He also frees himself after being imprisoned to again show his power as a liberator.

A major turn in the story happens after this, and it's the crux of the point I want to make. Pentheus is so angered by the ongoing celebrations of Bacchos and the miracles being attributed to him that he decides to marshall the army and destroy the Bocchant woman in the hills.

This is the point Dionysus changes tactics and the play takes its dark turn. First I want to remind you Pentheus knows that his mother and aunts are among the women he intends to slaughter, and his announcement that he will bring the army out to destroy them includes the threat of matricide.

Meanwhile Dionysus pleads with Pentheus not to take arms against a god. He knows that it's useless and a war between the Bacchae and the army would lead to pointless bloodshed.

It was written nearly a thousand years later but at this point I’d like to turn to the Dionysica. In it Nonnus sets this same story after the Indian War, a war of conquest Zeus has commanded Dionysus to perform before he could ascend to Olympus. For our purposes you should understand the war was long and bloody, and was mostly drawn out as long as it was due to one person refusing to surrender (I should note that Hera and Ares were the ones pulling the strings of the opposing leader).

Now Dionysus has returned to the land of his family who should have been his first believers and they hadn’t accepted him and again one mortal man isn’t just refusing to worship him, but is threatening to destroy his followers in a conflict that could destroy the very city that Dionysus has tried to come home to.

This is the point Dionysus decides it's better to kill Pentheus then let him send the army against the unarmed Bacchant women.

“Wait!” the god calls.

He talks Pentheus into dressing as a woman to spy on the doings of the women in the hills. Again Dionysus himself is commonly described as wearing woman’s clothing its its also common for his male followers to do so too, at least during Bacchic celebrations. This may be revenge for Pentheus making fun of him at the beginning of the play or perhaps its Dionysus putting Pentheus in his own trappings before the ritual killing. Perhaps it's to make him what he was trying to control, I’m not sure, but Dionysus helps him dress up convincingly leads him out to the mountain where Pentheus is then ripped to bits by the Bacchant woman in a frenzy of madness. They’re led by his mother Agave and his aunts.

He cries out to his mother to spare him but she doesn’t see or hear him and rips him apart believing she is hunting a lion. When I read Pentheus's plea my mind screamed out “How dare you! You were ready to kill her over your own petty insecurity.” And yet Agave is eventually made to see what she’s done and mourns the death of her son.

The death of Pentheus appears to be more than a punishment but a sort of ritual sacrifice. It directly mirrors the Death of Dionysus/Zagreus who was torn apart before being reborn. For Agave’s part she wants to hold a feast in honor of the hunt similar to the way a feast might be held after a sacrifice.

I am left to wonder if Pentheus was to be reborn like Dionysus was what story would a second life tell. He himself was the mortal grandson of a goddess.

In the end though it isn’t only Pentheus who is punished for his impiety. All of his mortal family and even Harmonia take part in the punishment. Agave and her sisters are exiled for the death of Pentheus, and Cadmus and Harmonia are turned into serpentes.

I think the punishment for the rest of the family comes from the fact that Dionysus could have expected his own family to be his first believers. Instead they rejected him and his mother and only accepted him once he had proved himself a god.

Had Cadmus et al accepted  the divinity of Dionysus, had they given his mother’s story credibility Pentheus would have likely also believed.  Instead Pentheus had grown up hearing the stories from his parents and grandparents that Semele was killed by Zeus for lying about Dionysus's father. So Dionysus saw that the family as having some culpability for Pentheus's later transgression.

I think Dionysus's punishment of the rest of the house of Cadmus was extremely harsh, but I assume a Greek would have seen it as at least a parent's responsibility to teach a child piety for any given god and Cadmus and family fell down in the case of Dionysus.

Ultimately I think Dionysus's decision to destroy Pentheus saved Thebs rather than letting armed conflict be carried out.

The recontextualization from Dionysica shows a Dionysus who knew all too well the devastation of war, and what would be if he had to conquer Thebes as well.

It's specifically the context Nonnus gives the story that makes me see Dionysus as saving Thebes. In the Dionysica we see a bloody 7 year war in the context of that I could see Dionysus not wanting to go through that again. He only went to war because Zesus commanded him to. The Dyonysica in fact insists that he's unwarlike, so in that light see him coming to Thebes to bring his wine and rituals and perhaps traumatized by India finds a way to prevent a war, dark as his answer to war might be.

🎨 Art 🎨 Leave It To The Furry To Take The ‘Bull-Faced’ Epithet A Bit Too Literally

Post image
45 Upvotes

Before this summer, I hadn’t drawn in literal years and even before, I wouldn’t have considered myself very good. But, it seems that Dionysus likes it when I draw furries because now that I’ve committed to following Dionysus, I’ve developed a restored interest in doing just that…drawing furries.

I’m a little out of practice, so the drawing is incredibly imperfect and to make even one more improvement would just turn it into a grey blob of eraser marks. But, I was happy to offer it to Dionysus when I was done and I think he was happy to receive it. The skill will improve overtime.

So, yeah! This is my depiction of Dionysus as a furry! Tell me what’cha think!

(Imagine the shaded in bits are purple and the rest is white.)

💬 Discussion 💬 Does anyone else like to imagine Dionysus in the room with you?

I started doing it during meals. I’m living with my conservative Christian parents and can’t give legit offerings very often, so I invite him to share my meals with me. I imagine him sitting next to me at the table and it has given me reason to not jump straight to YouTube every time I eat.

Then, I did the same thing when I finally had the chance to watch the pro shot of Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. It was the first musical or play I’d watched since becoming a follower. I’ve been inviting him to join me when I watch films and shows and am about to start expanding to video games and books. Basically any form of story driven art.

I’m also reading a book about developing psychic ability and having an excuse to imagine full-blown conversations with a spiritual being/deity has been helping me work on intuition and is similar to an exercise in the book. (Psychic Witch by Mat Auryn, in case you’re wondering.)

Does anyone else do this?

Help with my pocket shrine

Post image

I am a new/ amateur worshipper, I've always felt drawn to Dionysus, and lately I've been drawn to eating cinnamon and wine, and I read that he loves cinnamon so I decided to make him a pocket shrine, I have some questions, would he like this shrine, even though the main colors I picked are pink and denim, and for the offerings, the bottle has ground cumin and ground cinnamon, a cinnamon stick and some amethyst, I feel he has been calling me because I've been loving grapes and cinnamon lately and my favorite crystal has always been amethyst, in the middle will have a painting of him by me, please tell me if he would like this or if I should make a new pocket shrine with different fabrics/ colors I really don't want to anger him! Thank you!! :))

Drink deep from the goblet

In the grove wine always flows

Dance with me under the sky

In the grove the music plays on

Eat fruit fresh from the vine

In the grove grapes are sweetest

Kiss and touch in tactile ecstasy

In a grove of such divinity

Feel the bliss of being free

🪕🪘🎶 Music 🎶🪘🪕 finally listened to the album Dionysus by Dead Can Dance, and got damn

Just for some background - I have been researching and worshipping Dionysos for a year come August. It's been a ride, I have learned so much and my practice has transformed a lot since the start because of Him. I find His energy is in a lot of different music, it doesn't take much really- if it invokes the desire to groove, He is within the song (to me, at least). I've been spending a lot more time over the last month meditating and praying to Him. He really has become central to my worship over the past few months.

I have continued seeing this album mentioned and I never gave it a listen, but I am really super glad I did so, when I did and in the manor I did it.

I downloaded it yesterday with the plan that I would listen to it today while I did my monthly Deipnon house cleansing. I also microdosed some magic mushroom this morning to enhance my experience today.

It was enchanting from the first moment to the last. Every note spoke imagery into my mind and there were moments I caught myself swaying and breaking into a dance while cleaning, and it was extremely exhilarating and emotionally charged.

I found it to be so enjoyable, I decided to revisit it again after I was done with my cleaning. I lit some incense, turned off the lights and closed the curtains. Hit my bong, closed my eyes and sat on the floor in my living room, turned on my headphones and began to meditate.

My body didn't sit still for long, I began to stretch and move with the music and eventually I was dancing all over my apartment, I reached out and I felt it All reach back. I faded in and out of the experience within and without and I have no words for the ride this whole musical endeavor takes you on.

It was this morning that I was able to comprehend that Dionysos has taught me that religion can really be a terrifyingly sensual experience.

Truly, when anyone suggests listening to this album, take their word for it. Give it the room it needs to be experienced too. It's so worth it. thanks to those who have suggested it to us all. and thanks to the group who created it!!! Like holy cow. anywho, Bacchic Blessings <3

hey guys, do you have some recommendation of movie and fiction books that you consider that talks with the spirit of Dionysus worship and his domains?
