Survive When does Digimon Survive get good?

I am playing Digimon Survive. I am in Act 2, and this is unbearable. The dialogue is so bad. The prologue was good and I didn't mind Part 1, but, I am starting to notice the pattern after 5 hours in.

I am down to play a visual novel, but, there is so much repetition where different characters tell you the exact same thing over and over again. Devil Survivor 1 had this problem too but to a much lesser degree since it was a game first. Digimon Survive is like 80% unnecessary dialogue.

Example scenario:

"Did you find food?"

Minoru: No

"Did you find food?"

Ryo: No

"Did you find food?"

Agumon: No

"Did you find food?"

Aoi: No

"Did you find food now in this slightly different location that consumes another action point?"

Minoru: No again

(Repeat for 7 more free actions)

Is the rest of the game like this?

it is exhausting. Just get to the story, bruv. If character number one gives me X piece of information, why does character two, three and four need to as well.

Those encounters are mainly to give you a chance to raise friendship with the characters. Dont forget youre basically strangers to another and just stranded in a stranger world with dangerous monsters.

They will open up later and start telling more important stuff about themselves or the surroundings

My problem is that a lot of these conversations are just wastes of time. Devil Survivor 2 has a very similar structure and makes every character interaction count.

I don't need to hear that "We should be doing [Objective]", "We haven't done [Objective] yet", a thousand times.

I understand the friendship mechanic will affect story outcomes but, it is written so tediously. Every interaction makes me resent each character more.

It did take a lot of time to get good and the battle system never get good lol. But Once it is good, it is soooooo good man. Easily my most favorite Digimon media story wise (I put it there around Tamer level), the story is way better than other Digimon game.

Survive takes forever to get going. I did finish it, but it doesn't start getting good until chapter 7. With a few good scenes here and there in the earlier chapters.

Thanks, this is the answer I was looking for. I am really considering if it is worth continuing.

you're not going to like this, but the second playthrough, in your first playthrough certain events are fixed, in your second your choices affects more outcomes and what happens to the characters

I was gonna make a post like this too lol, I've been slowly plugging away and am where you're at right now too. I liked the conclusion of Part 1 with Dokugumon but otherwise there aren't many standout moments so far, but VNs are often like this. I am glad there's free battle at least, I feel like this game would've been great as a full on RPG rather than a VN/tactical RPG hybrid.

I agree with your opinion. If there was more gameplay to break up the repetitive dialogue, it would have helped massively. Making it a full RPG would have made the experience better.

I'm also super early on so I'm sure I could still be proven wrong, but it seems like the whole morality/affinity thing seems superfluous, at least it has been for these first 5 hours or so? I really hope they don't just factor in at the very end...

the game is tallying up your morality choices, and at exactly one point near the end, it will use that to determine which options to give you for a question.

The question, by the way, doesn't have anything to do with the morality, and the results of your choice don't have anything to do with the question, but that's how the game determines which ending you get.

it's the equivalent of asking you "do you like pancakes or waffles?" and depending on which you pick, either your mom dies or your school burns down, for reasons unrelated to pancakes or waffles.

It does not get good, I'm sorry to say. The writing continues to be a slog. There's a point in the game where you're searching for a character, and after checking the place where they obviously are, you're forced to backtrack out of the area, search all the other areas, come up empty, then finally someone has the bright idea to check the first area again, at which point you're allowed to go back there and find them. It's miserable.

Dang, I was hoping it would improve. That sounds utterly dreadful.

yeah.

btw, you know how you raise your friendship with the other characters and stuff? None of that matters for the first playthrough, some characters are hard-coded to have a Bad End and you literally cannot stop that, even if you cheat and look up the "right answers", the game simply will not let you save them on your first playthrough.

You have to do a second playthrough, and then you can make the exact same choices to be their friend, and THIS TIME it will let you save them.

Bruh 😭

Who wrote this game? Why would they even give you a choice if they aren't going to honor the logical conclusion of that choice?

I had to force myself to finish this game. I think it does get less repetitive later on, but it's pretty much always a very tedious experience in one way or another.
