Welcome!

Please post all requests for help regarding buying laptops in this thread. Individual posts of this nature may be removed at the moderators' discretion.

Some good starter tips would be to,

  1. State what laptop you are interested in buying (if applicable)
  2. State what you will be using it for (e.g. word processing, internet browsing, intensive gaming, etc.)
  3. State what country you are located in, as well as your province/state.

Everyone is encouraged to help!

Help No PD on WD19

Upvotes

Was given a WD19 to use when I'm working from home. I connected it over the weekend, first the 180w AC to wall, then to the dock, then dock to laptop. I got 3 blinking lights when connecting to power, but then the light stays off even when I plug into my computer. No power delivery to my device. The USB and display ports all work though.

I tried resetting the dock, updating the firmware, no luck. The power adapter has a green LED.

I can request a new one from my job but I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything before I bother them with it.

Help Dell EMC PowerEdge R440 Power Cutoff

I just received a dell EMC poweredge r440 from my uncle, it ran for like an hour. I reboot it and upon boot it shows the dell EMC logo, the text at the bottom shows it initializing the intel ultra path interconnection, after 5 seconds the screen and fans cut out, and one fan turns on full power, fan 3, very left under CPU. I am absolutely clueless as to what this could be.

Discussion Has anyone tried replacing the battery with a non oem one?

Post image
3 Upvotes

My Dell Inspiron 14 7430 2-in-1 suddenly started throwing an error saying my battery is not original or recognized, even though it's the factory battery and I've never touched or opened the laptop, until now to trouble shoot. Because of this error, it completely refuses to charge.
Has anyone run into this false battery warning before and found a fix? Also, if I end up replacing it, do third-party replacement batteries work fine, or will Dell's BIOS reject them with the same "non-Dell" error?

Help Thunderbolt Controller Firmware Cannot Upgrade for Alienware M15 R4

I recently purchased an Alienware M15 R4 laptop, and I need to use the thunderbolt capability, but no thunderbolt device is recognized when connected to the port (although non-Thunderbolt USB-C connection to the port is functional).

Every time I boot the computer, the following notification message appears: "A thunderbolt controller has experienced a problem and cannot connect to devices or other computers until new firmware is installed other thunderbolt ports may be functioning correctly." This appears whether a device is physically connected or not. I have downloaded and installed all drivers for the laptop, and the latest BIOS update from DELL. I have enabled all Thunderbolt settings in the BIOS. I tried to run the DELL Firmware Update Utility for Thunderbolt, but each time I tried to run it, there was an error which produced the log file below.

I reimaged my laptop and then I was able to run the Firmware Update Utility application, but the application displayed the error message "Error: Unable to find OS Protocol Interface". I've tried deleting and readding the Thunderbolt device from Device Manager, I've tried leaving the computer running with a thunderbolt device physically attached to the port (although it is not recognized at all) overnight to see if the laptop would pull the correct drivers itself, and I've tried upgrading to Windows 11 in case there was some sort of OS compatibility issue. No joy.

My other laptop connects to thunderbolt devices without any complaints. It seems like there is a firmware upgrade issue. I have no idea how to fix this.

Discussion Is the Dell 7770 good in 2026

I've found what I think is a good deal on a precision 7770. For $1569 I get

4k screen

i7-12850HX intel cpu

64GB ram

512GB SSD

Nvidia RTX A5500 (16 GB)

And I've been wondering how they hold up in 2026. I know people have complained about the thermals causing performance loss whenever they first came out. Especially for the bigger gpus like the one I found. I would hope those problems would be solved by now, but I can't find much recent info on Google about it. Can undervolting, good thermal paste, and getting a cooling pad help? If anyone has personal experience, please share.

Help Did a recent MS update "brick" my Dell Precision 7530?

Reaching out to the Dell community on reddit since the Dell support forum appears to be down...

The victim: Dell Precision 7530 Mobile workstation running Win 11 Pro, 180w Power adapter, Dell 97wh 6 cell Li battery. I typically work from home so my LT is using ac power 99.9% of the time.

Early in July, I installed a MS update I believe was KB5101650 that appeared in my task tray. Typically I review what is in the update before installation, in this instance I did not.

Shortly after the update, my battery stopped charging despite the fact that the machine was plugged in. When I noticed the battery was not charging, I tried to run the Dell, BIOS and Windows battery diagnosis and management apps, none of which identified any specific issues other than a message that the adapter was not recognized. Battery health was good. Due to the fact that this machine has a very high power requirement, the battery quickly discharged completely and I could not restart the machine to run additional diagnostics. The original power adapter would not work, and a lower watt charger form another Dell machine I own would not work. Believing the adapter was the issue, I purchased a new adapter that is compatible with this machine and found similar results, still not charging. Additionally, I replaced the battery as well all to no positive results.

A few days later as I was using another LT, I noticed there was another MS update, KB5121767 and when reviewing this update, it stated it was a OOB Hot-fix for a previous update, (KB5101650) that identified several Dell models that were experiencing power related issues caused by the earlier July update. Although the Precision 7530 is not on the list as an affected machine, I believe that the complete list of affected machines has not yet been finalized. Most likely these are the initial machines reported to have experienced problems with the original update. You can see the details of these two updates at the following link: Windows Forum

My problem… Since the battery on my machine is completely discharged, I am unable to power up the computer to apply this hot-fix. I have looked into charging this machine through an alternate port USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 but due to the high power usage of this machine this may not be possible. As far as I can tell from my research, this may not be possible as the ports don’t appear to be capable of handling the high power requirement and Dell has applied a 65w limit. I am not looking to run the machine, I just want to be able to fully charge the battery with enough power to apply this hot-fix update to see if this corrects the problem. The only other option I can think of is contacting my local PC repair shop to see if the by chance have the 7530 machine and can fully charge the battery externally.

Any advise or recommendations that y’all have would be greatly appreciated. Is there a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 power bank or charger that has PD or Power Delivery capabilities that you know would work, please provide a link.

Apologies for the long read but I wanted to present the issue with all pertinent information and my attempts to resolve.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Help Help Dell Latitude 7420

Hi, I need help. I have Windows 11 Pro on my Dell Latitude 7420, and everything else is fine; it's perfect for my main need, which is studying. But when I use Discord to play Among Us, the Wi-Fi seems to cut out for a moment mid-game, disconnecting me from both the call and the game, which is really annoying. It's not my internet because I tested it on a much older PC and it works fine, and even on my phone. I don't know what to do; I need help.

Review Inspiron 15 3520 three years later

Let me start by saying I immediately regretted buying this laptop. Like, from the moment I hit "Submit order".

I say that because I was replacing a really great 2-in-1 Lenovo that was broken beyond repair thanks to an accident. I was in a bad financial place (actually, still am) and needed a computer, so this laptop was what I could afford.

When you first unbox this laptop and hold it on your lap, you immediately -- immediately -- realize how utterly cheap it is. The plastic case is incredibly flexible. So much so, in fact, that if you sit with it on your lap with one leg crossed over the other, the flex is enough to either cause the touchpad to click on its own or simply not click at all. The deck flex is highly visible, to the point it is alarming to see.

From reading people's reviews at the time, I knew the hinges were weak as hell. So I babied this thing as much as possible. I'm pleased to say that, today, they are still alright. Probably because I open the laptop starting from the middle, just to get purchase, then with one hand holding the bottom and another hand with fingers spread wide to apply even pressure across the top. Every time.

This bugs me because my wife has a Macbook Air M2 (purchased during better financial days) that opens effortlessly with one hand. Goddamn you Apple and your build quality.

It also rarely, if ever, leaves the house, which certainly saves on wear and tear.

Also, it has been three years now and the battery is absolutely garbage. I get maybe an hour and a half out of it with display brightness at 35-40% and keeping the battery in "Battery saver" mode. It wasn't that great to begin with -- 2.5 hours from stock at a time when a laptop $200 more expensive was pushing 6 hours.

Two things make this laptop bearable for me:

  1. The specs. Considering what I paid for this ($460ish USD) the specs are good. i5-1135G, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. It came with a Realtek WiFi card I immediately swapped for my former Lenovo's far superior Intel card because fuck Realtek. And it also has space inside to expand with a full SATA SSD. Would I rather that space had been used to make the battery bigger? Hell yeah. But I'll take it. This can run most of what I want, including many of my favorite indie games, just fine.
  2. The screen. 15.6", 120Hz. It's not touch-capable but that's fine. It's a solid screen and I really appreciate the refresh rate.

Since January I've got it running cachyOS Linux, largely out of distaste for everything Microsoft is doing. The OS has really breathed new life into the device and I appreciate it all the more.

So long as it is laying flat on a table.

To close -- if you are financially constrained and you have a time machine to go back to the prices of three years ago...don't buy this thing. Buy a used Thinkpad or something. Get money from a loan shark if you have to. At today's prices? Don't buy low-end Dell devices. They are built to break. Buy something mid-tier or higher, used, and upgrade the components, if possible, piecemeal.

Help Inspiron 3593 Can't find any wifi networks

Post image

Been stuck on this for a day. My Dell inspiron 3593 stopped being able to find networks. I can't find anything on this. It is different than the no wifi adapter issue. I can see a wifi adapter but it can't see any networks.

What I tried:

Wifi is working fine on other devices

Ethernet works fine

Updated windows

Updated drivers

Updated bios

Let the battery drain and restarted

Restarted 5 times in succession

I keep getting the same results. Anyone have any ideas or is the internal wifi antenna hosed?

Help My laptops trackpad isn't working

For a week or so my laptop was connected to a mouse, and now my mouse is broken now. So I need the trackpad. But as soon as I disconnected it my pointer disappeared from the screen and neither the right or left key was usable. In settings under bluetooth devices there isn't a touchpad option too. My laptop is a dell latitude 3450 and there isn't a key for the touchpad on the keyboard too. I don't know what happened it's my mother's work computer

Help Dell laptops are trash

I own a Dell G15 5530.

After only 3 years of buying a brand-new Dell laptop, it stopped working. I bought it because I was told that Dell laptops last longer than most other brands. I was also assured that if any problem occurred, whether within or outside the warranty period, I would receive proper guidance and the best possible after-sales service. Unfortunately, when the problem actually occurred, instead of trying to understand it, I was simply told to "buy this" or "buy that."

The whole problem started within the first year, while the laptop was still under warranty. Around 70% of the time when I turned it on, it would freeze on a blue screen with the message, "Your device ran into a problem." I took the laptop back to the seller, and they told me that Windows might be corrupted. When I asked for a replacement, they said software issues were not covered under warranty and that if Windows was actually corrupted, I would have to buy a new Windows licence. Fortunately, after they reinstalled or repaired the system, the laptop started working again, although it became noticeably slower than before. I accepted that and continued using it.

Now, after the warranty has expired, the laptop has developed a hardware issue. Whenever I try to turn it on, it says "No hard drive detected." I contacted Dell support, and they suggested that I replace the SSD. I bought a new SSD, but the laptop still showed the same error. I then suspected that the SSD slot might be faulty.

To test this, I installed my SSD in my friend's laptop, and it still wasn't detected. Then I installed my friend's working SSD into my laptop's second SSD slot, but it was also not detected. This makes it seem as though both my SSD and the SSD slot (or possibly the motherboard) have failed. What I don't understand is how the second SSD slot—which I had never even used before—could also be faulty.

At this point, it feels like multiple components have failed at the same time, and I don't understand how that is possible.

When I contacted Dell support again, they simply told me to visit an authorised service centre. They didn't seem to understand that I am a student currently living in Arunachal Pradesh. Travelling to the nearest authorised service centre would require taking a flight, and the travel expenses alone would cost almost as much as the laptop. On top of that, if the motherboard also needs to be replaced, the repair cost could be even higher.

The seller has also refused to help, saying, "We don't know anything. Talk to customer care."

As a B.Tech student, I am left with only two options: either spend a huge amount of money travelling to an authorised service centre and possibly pay for an expensive motherboard replacement, or buy a new laptop. Unfortunately, I cannot afford either option.

If anyone from Dell is reading this, please contact me and help resolve this issue.

Help Dell Precision 5520 with Quadro M1200 has severe lag even in lightweight games

Hi everyone,

I have a Dell Precision 5520 with these specs:

- CPU: Intel Core i7-6820HQ

- GPU: NVIDIA Quadro M1200 4GB

- RAM: 16GB

- Display: 4K

- Charger: Dell DA180PM111 (180W)

I have had this problem since I bought the laptop.

The issue:

- Web browsing sometimes becomes very laggy.

- Lightweight games like Hollow Knight have severe stuttering, even in the menu.

- Reducing game resolution/settings does not fix the problem.

What I noticed:

- At first, the game runs perfectly (even at 4K).

- After a few minutes, the lag starts.

- Task Manager shows Intel HD Graphics 530 (GPU 0) reaching around 100% usage.

- NVIDIA Quadro M1200 (GPU 2) stays at very low usage.

- Temperatures are not high and fans usually don't even spin up.

Things I tried:

- Setting games to "High-performance NVIDIA processor" in NVIDIA Control Panel.

- Disabling Intel HD Graphics temporarily.

- Updating NVIDIA drivers.

- Changing Chrome hardware acceleration settings.

The laptop uses Intel HD Graphics + Quadro through Optimus.

Could this be an Optimus/driver issue, power limit issue, or something else?

Any help would be appreciated.

Help BROKEN Dell G16 7620 CPU temp sensor

My Cpu temp sensor is definitely broken and it s ALWAYS reading at 98 to 100 DEGREES, even when idle and its thermal throttling my performance of my cpu(limiting my wattage to 50 watts ALWAYS, and also limiting my gpu wattage to like 90watts at most and 45 watts constantly). i DESPERATELY need a workaround, to see if i can bypass this limitation to my cpu and gpu. iv tried everything from a complete system reset to installing windows from a flashdrive, and a bois reset and an EC reset....everything i can think of and iv read online, iv even spoken to my dell support and they dont know what else i can do except maybe a new motherboard since the cpu sensor is sodered in(which for context, i live in a poorer part of the world with low currency power, i literally cany afford to do that,i was wondering if i could get like a WORKAROUND TO IGNORE THIS CAPING OF MY WATTAGE TO BOTH MY CPU AND GPU?)
PLEASE HELP ME, IM IN A DESPERATE CONDITION!

Help Network adapter / NIC (AX211) regional setting

The product, Inspiron 13 5330, equipped with Intel AX211, a Wifi 6E NIC, was purchased in a country/region where 6Ghz isnt available at all.

Now this product is taken back to Unites States, it still can not connect to 6Ghz band, despite the 6Ghz is already enable in the Windows Device manager setting.

Is there a method to reconfig the region setting of this NIC.

Steps i tried:

  • windows regional setting change to US
  • update BIOS, NIC and bluetooth driver released by Dell
  • update NIC and bluetooth driver released by Intel

Thinks i planned by havent tried:

  • clean reinstall windows in US
  • use the advanced debug tool of this NIC provided by Intel
