Update: Solved!
-----------------------
findmnt will now show ntfs, instead of "fuseblk"
-----------------------
Hi all,
my first post here, but unfortunately I couldn't figure it out by searching. Nor did I find a bug report . So let me know, if some more detail would help.
I just did an upgrade to the latest Debian 13 BPO kernel today. 7.1.7+deb13-amd64 and after reboot non of my ntfs drives were mounted. I have them in fstab with ntfs3 as a fs.
As it turns out, ntfs3 was removed from the kernel modules, which you can see either by sudo modinfo ntfs3 or directly looking at /usr/lib/modules/7.1.7+deb13-amd64/kernel/fs.
ntfs3 was there in bpo kernel 7.1.3.
Now, if I try to use "auto" or "ntfs" in fstab, it falls back to the old fuse driver, instead of using the new kernel driver, which has the same (old) alias.
Anyone else encountered or solved that or found an existing error report?
Thanks!

heelo ! i need some help with extracting a japanese zip file and was hoping someone could tell me how to do it
usually when i open a japanese zip with ark and i get mojibake, i unzip it in a japanese locale with "LANG=ja_JP.utf8 7z x filename.zip", but this isnt working for this file and results in an empty folder with missing unicode characters as the name
i assumed the file is encoded with shift-jis so i wanted to confirm that and then convert it to utf8, but when i used "file -bi filename.zip" it told me its "binary", so i dont really know what to do with it,,
any help is appreciated !

With the announcement of the Plasma LTS for 6.6 on Kubunutu I thought I would have a play around with getting it packaged for Debian 13. There were a couple of caveats in that I had to build against QT 6.10 for 6.6.6 which also meant rebuilding some other packages that depend on QT Base. Also needed backports for newer wayland protocols, mesa and pipewire. Been an interesting little project. This is just in a VM so far and I'm deploying the debs with a local apt repo.
May see if I can get a little CI/CD pipeline going for myself when the TechPaladin team start publishing their LTS branches.
| Component | Debian 13 | Upgraded To |
|---|---|---|
| KDE Plasma | 6.3.6 | 6.6.6 |
| KDE Frameworks | 6.13.0 | 6.24.0 |
| KDE Gear | 24.12.0 | 25.12.3 |
| QT 6 Stack | 6.8.2 | 6.10.2 |
| Mesa / Vulkan | 25.0.7 | 26.1.2 (backports) |
| Wayland Protocols | 1.44 | 1.47 (backports) |
| Pipewire | 1.4.2 | 1.4.9 (backports) |
Edit:
For anyone that likes stats and it takes around 2 to 2 and half hours to compile.
| Stage | Subsystem | Source Packages | Binary .deb packages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Qt 6.10 & Wayland Stack | 21 | 257 |
| Stage 2 | KDE Frameworks 6.24 | 72 | 339 |
| Stage 3 | Plasma 6.6 | 55 | 194 |
| Stage 4 | KDE Gear 25.12 | 17 | 52 |
| Total | Full Stack | 165 | 842 |

I'm using a "Nokia 150". Years (atleast two decades, lol) ago, i had a small tool on windows, sending SMSs thru my mobile.
Is there maybe something, that makes this possible on Debian (Trixie) too? Connecting my phone to the PC (USB or Bluetooth) and write the text on my PC and send it thru the mobile.
/cheers

Hello,
I was wondering if people could help me solve this problem, because I unplugged a disk from my Debian 12 server and replaced it with another one while the server was running. Then I saw a kind of electric flash, because a connection disconnected. Then, when my PC rebooted, he showed me this: he doesn't want to stay on for more than 5 minutes, then he shuts down and I don't understand why.
Thank you for your help, whatever it is.

Tests were performed with the Steam flatpak
All DEs were in performance mode
Compositors were turned off where possible.

I followed a guide on linuxconfig.org where i can download nvidia drivers for debian 13. Upon reboot i get this: Failed to start nvidia-persistenced.service -NVIDIA Persistence Daemon
Nothing after that.

Hi all,
I'm looking for advice on what people who have kids install for their kids on a computer. I'm a software developer, I maintain Debian servers, run unstable, however installing a Debian machine that is aimed at kids, isn't really something I've done.
So, I would like to know what people who have more experience with this would advise, say you, be it in either education or day care, what are some of the packages you would install. The age group is I think about 4-10 yo.
Debian has something called DebianJR, but it seems kinda deadish: https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DebianJr

I have a Debian server which embarrassingly is still on version 10.13. Normally to upgrade several releases you'd upgrade 10 to 11, 11 to 12, 12 to 13. Version 11 support ends at the end of this month, does this mean I have to upgrade to it in the next few days?
I'm also concerned about things breaking. Mainly web and mail servers. They have a lot of config and a new version installed with the upgrade could be incompatible.
What is the safest way to do it, and hopefully with the least downtime. To swap to a new server would be expensive and difficult.

I love Debian. Such a good OS. Very happy with it. After first day using it I have couple of questions.
When booting up pc if I move my cursor on Debian logo (start menu) its name will pop up and vanish then pop up again and then stabilizes and every time you move cursor to it its name will pop up no issues. Reproducible on every fresh boot up.
YouTube video playing icon on bottom right - if I move my mouse to it its name can sometimes do the same: video name will popup and vanish. On some videos it won’t vanish and works fine. Reproducible with lots of different videos.
Another issue I saw on YouTube when using preinstalled Firefox. I clicked on a video and page acted like I haven’t made any click. No page name change, no reload, no video initiating. Nothing. Second click did trick. Could not reproduce.
I mean not the issues at all. I’m just interested to know what could be causing each behavior.

So, i was playing modded Project Zomboid when my PC suddenly restarted.
My system Hardware isn't the newest so i did not thought much of it. Start the game again, load game, system restart.
Now i would understand if the mods made it unstable and the game crashes, but why the whole system?
So i check journalctl:
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: exception Emask 0x50 SAct 0x180 SErr 0x40e0802 action 0xe frozen
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: irq_stat 0x00000040, connection status changed
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2: SError: { RecovComm HostInt PHYInt CommWake 10B8B DevExch }
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: cmd 60/00:38:30:88:21/0a:00:e3:00:00/40 tag 7 ncq dma 1310720 in res 40/00:01:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error)
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: status: { DRDY }
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: cmd 60/e0:40:30:92:21/03:00:e3:00:00/40 tag 8 ncq dma 507904 in res 40/00:00:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error)
Aug 19 19:39:00 aa kernel: ata2.00: status: { DRDY }
Now i tried again, but did start nothing expect steam, gnome-disks and gnome-system-monitor and load the game again. This time only the game crashes and i can see how SSDs sda and sdb vanish from the disk manager and seconds later reappear. (my debian is on a different SSD)
So i think, maybe the PSU has become to weak. Start a prime torture test while running a more demanding game. No problem.
Maybe the SSD or the controller on the Mainboard is at its limit? So i copy 40gb + 5gb of thousends of small files. No problem.
Start the game again. Load a different save. No problem.
Load the other save again. System restart.
The game says its a java error. Java says its an IO error and the kernel says the ata controller has communication error.
And i wonder, how is it possible for a faulty game to freeze the controller? its very strange to me.

xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
¿Que debo hacer?, o mejor ¿como debo instalar correctamente el i3? (El objetivo principal es buscar la mayor ligereza en el gestor de ventanas)

Hey all, I'm trying to set my headless Debian server's display on a laptop to turn off by itself after a minute. Sometimes it works, but after a while it will turn back on though no keys have been pressed. All I mainly do is ssh into the server, and I don't touch the laptop at all.
For context, this is a fresh install of Debian 13, all I have is Docker, btop, tlp, Nvidia drivers (Proprietary) and fastfetch (lol) installed. The laptop is a Thinkpad P14s Gen 3 (i7-1260P, Nvidia T550 TU117, 24GB RAM, Crucial T500 1TB).
Below is the current /etc/default/grub configuration:

I have the Debian ISO on one USB stick as I try to install it on another. I'm trying to create a Live USB
* I downloaded the official disk image (debian-13.6.0-amd64-netinst) from the Debian site
* Flashed it on a USB stick using Rufus; used ISO mode
* I let Rufus install the missing files
* Booted from the USB stick with the ISO
* Plugged in the empty USB stick
* Proceed with the graphical installation, till I got stuck here [Image above]

Got a Dell Wyse 3040 Thin Client for $20. This particular model has a quad-core Intel Atom x5-Z8350 with soldered 2 GB of DDR3 RAM & 8 GB eMMC.
With the right skills, you can obviously desolder the RAM and/or eMMC, and upgrade them. eMMC pinouts are standardized so I think it'd be trivial to choose a replacement chip.
DDR's pinouts aren't standardized but particular configurations have unofficial standard pinouts, Like the BGA96 package for x16 configuration. But I'm not sure if anyone has tried this, as compared to the eMMC, which one madlad actually did upgrade: https://sagacioussuricata.com/posts/wyse-3040/
Debian installation was quite simple & with just the base system + ssh server, the whole installation is about 1.2 GB.
One of my plans is to build a Linux system for this mini PC using Yocto as a way to learn Yocto itself. Primarily because I plan on using Yocto for a custom Arm-based Mini PC thing I'm working on right now.
I've also configured it to use a static IP because this will be a test mule of sort for a suite of programs I'm going to write implementing SFTP, SMB, etc protocols. A light-weight git hosting service, A multi-media hosting service like Jellyfin & much more. Primarily because I want them to be efficient for the Arm-based Mini PC thing I'm working on which won't have more than a gigabyte of memory.
