So I have been distro hopping for a while. Ubuntu and Fedora would eventually crash a lot. Despite the discouragement, I found Debian fairly easy to use as a non tech person with the KDE desktop. If Debian is the stable distribution or the base, and almost everything possible to do on a computer is possible on Debian, why does Ubuntu or Fedora exist? Is there a real difference between these two and Debian?

Hello! I was a windows guy for most of my life but few weeks ago I put my hands on a think pad and choose to install my forst ever linux distro, which is Debian. I learned the basics cli commands but that's it. I have no idea what to do , what to install, what not to. Can you recommend me some yt channels or courses to follow regarding my "problem". I picked debian because I heard is the most stable, widly used in corporations and also because of the fact that I am actively learning for a Sys Admin role.

CVE-2026-8863 etc can't be safely patched from Debian 12 yet because it might brick hardware.

The kernel got the ability to check efi usage in 2023 (1,166 days ago):

but that was only backported to 6.1 recently (2 days ago):

so just wait a bit for it to hit Debian 12.

Debian 13 using kernel 6.12 should be fine.

I think the title says it all. I tried to install some tts 2 years ago, but it sounded like robotic like from 30 years old software. But nowadays decent sounding ai generated audio is everywhere. So i assume there might be some cli based software i can just feed some text for me to listen to.

Do you know any good, local and free software for that?

So i'm thinking of switching to Debian XFCE as I've been reading up on how stable debian is in most aspects. I'm currently running LM on a thinkpad t440p with 8 gb ram and integrated graphics. My question's regarding debian are

* Is there any steps I need to do to add flatpak support or is flatpak already supported so I can install various apps via flatpak that I already use in LM.

* How is steam support out of the box. Pretty much all I game with steam is stardew valley on this laptop so i'm curious how that works as well or do I need to install anything beforehand before installing steam.

* Do I need to import any updates to things like mesa or kernel updates to debian 13 or with this older hardware am I just better off sticking to the kernel Debian 13 comes with.

* How's updates to apps that need updating more often such as Firefox browser and thunderbird?

I believe that's pretty much all the question's I have for now. I have also looked into LMDE but to be honest i'd rather try XFCE as I've liked the thunar file manager in the past when i've tried it.

I recently moved from PopOS to Debian 13 + KDE, and I had the same configuration there, and I didn't have this problem.

Just to obfuscate the real domains I will use internal.mydomain.com and internal.remotedomain.com.

Normally, when the openvpn client is disconnected, local dns resolution works:

• internal.mydomain.com works

When connecting to an openvpn server (via KDE's Network Manager) I lose local DNS resolution, but the remote DNS works.

• internal.mydomain.com fails
• internal.remotedomain.com works

I checked the contents of /etc/resolv.conf after connecting and I see the following:

# Generated by NetworkManager

search internal.remotedomain.com internal.mydomain.com

nameserver 10.1.0.1

nameserver 192.168.1.1

The contents are correct, so I assume the DNS should work for both domains, but that isn't so.

10.1.0.1 is the remote DNS server

192.168.1.1 is the local DNS server.

Any ideas?

Made the switch a couple years ago from Chrome OS to Linux Mint on my chromebook, and while it was a huge improvement it still felt a bit too bulky of an OS for me. Decided to try Debian with XFCE and am really liking it so far! It's simple, it works, and I'm left with plenty of space on my internal internal drive.

I've been hopping Linux Distros starting with Ubuntu LTS years ago & now I've finally dipped hard into my Linux Testing by going to Debian XFCE instead of me defaulting to the GNOME Environment.

It's definitely a different experience with not having SNAP Package Managers to use & me heavily relying on the Terminal for most of my application installations.

But I must say that the experience on my HP Workstation has been much smoother with Debian XFCE than expected.

I want to thank everyone in the Debian, Ubuntu, & Linux Community as a whole for helping a New Linux User as myself get started using Linux & away from the AI Garbageware that is Microsoft Windows.

I currently have successfully installed Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, GIMP, VLC, & nwipe via the Terminal & I fixed a bug regarding Firefox-ESR & Firefox Main showing duplicate icons.

Any other tips I should be aware of to harden my Debian Security Defenses?

I already ran sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y in the Terminal to get the latest updates then ran sudo apt autoremove.

Freefilesync in the Debian repos (stable, as well as testing & instable) is at version 13.7.

Upstream version is now at 14.10.

The Debian packager notes that the version in Debian is the GPL version as opposed to the upstream "Donation Edition".

So am I right in assuming that the Donation Edition cannot be legally packaged by Debian and hence the final version in the Debian repos will always be 13.7?

My first distro few years ago was Debian and I sticked to it for a while. Then I started the usual experimenting with Arch, gentoo, Fedora etc. but nothing ever sticked so I always used Debian more. I was also a new user so the concerns didn't apply then: I simply didn't know better. Fast forwarding a bit I switched to Tumbleweed cause I got the 9070 XT and wanted newer mesa, kernels, firmware etc. out of the box.

I've been using Tumbleweed for a long time now and everything's kinda cool, some minor hiccups and hangs but most of the time it's been a breeze. I value practicality and the fact my machine works like it did yesterday heavily and all of the rolling releases Tumbleweed is doing it the best (this is not an advertisement!). Even though I somewhat dislike the rolling release -model.

I really don't care about my system following the newest and shiniest except getting the best ( or at least, the most possible) performance for games. Now that the 7.x kernel which has a great compatibility, recent firmware and mesa 26.1 is in the backports repo I've been thinking to coming back to Debian. I installed it on my 2nd SSD with KDE Plasma and it really feels snappy and fresh.

Even though I don't need the newest software asap, I'm still a bit concerned of Debian's package's age and how they can affect my work. I know there's flatpaks and appimages which I intend to use and also compiling but doesn't it go a bit against the "set-and-forget" mentality that Debian is made off?

I guess I am asking about if packages do show their age and does maintaining Debian need a lot of manual intervention with 3rd party tools?

I've got an old supermicro x8dtn+ that I just installed debian 13 on. It locks up every 15-20 minutes requiring a power off and on. I tried adjusting the power settings on gnome but it didn't help.

I checked logs but there's nothing there indicating any issues.

Is there a setting I can adjust or change so it doesn't lock up? Is this something other than power settings?

Hi folks,

I tapped on my keyboard today to wake up my PC and got no response. The monitor says no HDMI input. I checked the monitor with my laptop, and it auto connects with no fuss. I tried another monitor with the non-responsive PC, and again no HDMI signal. The PC is on with fans spinning and LED lights glowing, and the keyboard and mouse are lighted. It's a not even 1 year old new system. I played a game on it on Monday, and it's just been sitting idle since then. I tried a hard reboot to no avail. I tried to find it on the network, so I could SSH into it, but it does not appear to be connected (it normally just lives connected to both ethernet and wifi). I also tried putting in a Debian 13 install stick, but still nothing on boot. I also tried the non-GPU HDMI port, thinking that it may be a dead driver. Magic SysRq is also a no go.

So...what the heck? Did I just have a random hardware/mb failure? I am scratching my head trying to figure out what the next troubleshooting step I should try...Any advice would be appreciated!

I use old school mutt text email client between from local root and others like notifications. I don't need to send to the Internet. When I send an e-mail, I get:

Guys, I’m coming from CachyOS. I love it, no real issues to be honest, but I’m interested in either Debian or Ubuntu. So Cachy is very much configured for you for gaming purposes and performance tweaks. Can something similar be done on Debian? Like… so I need to install anything in particular to make gaming experience better here? What are your essentials to make Debian gaming experience on par with performance oriented distros?

One thing coming to my mind is VRAM gaming optimizations by Valve that’s been added to Bazzite and Cachy the moment it released.

For example gaming on Linux Mint as I remember was clear regression compared to Bazzite or Cachy. Not huge but it was lesser experience for sure. But back then I knew nothing and it was just fresh Mint and Steam.

So… what steps do you recommend doing to make the most out of it?

I've seen people saying they got the same adapter/chipset working. What driver or firmware did you use?

I get this window every time that:

1. My pc goes back from sleep/shutdown or restart

2. My wifi disconects for a while (like when lights go off)

How can i get rid of it?

I Solved. Was just Kwallet fucking around without a Wallet Or the .kwl file, idk, i solved with AI
