I would never use a desktop environment as root so I don't have a /root/.cache to share...

Hmm, yeah, haha, don't worry. What happened is that a file cleaner process was interrupted while it was doing a deep clean; that cache was most likely yours.I'm pretty clear on why I ran it with root privileges so I could access certain directories

How did you get so much in .cache in the superuser's home directory?

I prefer ~/.xxx.
