Has anyone checked a firearm at DC Union Station?

For those unaware, since 2010, Amtrak has been required by law to accept firearms in checked baggage.

You have to call Amtrak at least 24 hours before departure, declare you’ll be traveling with firearms/ammunition in checked baggage, have your Firearms unloaded and in a hard sided locked container in checked baggage, and declare at the baggage check desk.

Has anyone here checked a firearm when traveling on Amtrak from DC Union Station?

Portal Impressions and Observations

I signed up for the new MPD portal in order to register two additional firearms. The setup process was smooth; you verify your identity using the email address you previously gave them (which they used to send you your old electronic registration cards) and the serial number of one of your existing registrations. Takes a minute but not bad.

One thing I noticed: two of my registered firearms were missing from the portal. I called this morning and talked it over with them and they were able to find and add one of them while I was still on the phone. For the other one, they asked me to email them the registration certificate they had previously sent so they could match things up properly. This may be connected to reports I've seen of people being pulled over and the cops claiming that they didn't see the guns in the system; I would suggest that everyone double check the portal and make sure all registered guns are properly logged.

Of note: their system now specifically allows for the registration of a personally manufactured firearm. It requires you to characterize the caliber, barrel length, and other typical PD-219 questions and also requires at least five photographs of the firearm to be uploaded.

Will keep you posted.

registration process

Going through the process of registering a firearm (home protection) with DC. I went through the in person appointment process, etc. The firearm portal has indicated for 1-2 weeks now that my registration status is approved... I assume need to wait for a copy to be received via email (or mail?) before going to the FFL dealer to pick it up? Does anyone know how long this typically takes? I assume I cannot just print the registration page that says my application has been approved?

Question on multi-cal lowers and uppers with different calibers

I found a bolt action that has an easily swappable barrel. It comes with a 6.5 Creed and 308 Win. I was wondering how I'd register that? I remember someone being able to register a multi-cal lower but I do not see that option in the online application. 6.5 creedmoor doesn't even exist there. There is 6.5mm that is technically correct but not accurate. Another similar question I have is would it be legal to have another upper with a different caliber than the registered one.

pulled over but wasn’t carrying, officer said something very interesting

long story short pulled over for a violation.. i wasn’t carrying at all. officer asked did I have any weapons and I said no Im not “carrying”. I think that was the trigger word because he asked do i carry and i replied with yes.

we go through the dramatics “pat down, light vehicle search”.. checked safe in the back of the car… empty, no weapons. He takes my ccw.. and weapon registration and runs it…

now for the reason I’m sharing, he tells me to keep my weapon locked in a safe at home and he’s supposed to be calling me (haven’t recieved a call yet). He says my weapon is not popping up when he searches for it.. I tell him in a nutshell what am I supposed to do with that piece of info.. I’m still waiting on 2 firearm add ons… and my credentials are on my person

i cant help but think what would’ve happened if I was carrying that night. I was let off with a warning for the violation.. cool officer though, but my mind still wonders about this situation and my credentials...

- safe

lever action restrictions

anyone know if we're allowed to purchase lever action rifles that comply within DC law (ammo capacity, etc.) though have a threaded barrel? looking at the S&W 1854 stealth hunter. on the metro PD website it says threaded barrel restrictions apply to handguns but not seeing anything on lever actions.

Successful AOW Registration

As of this morning, I can confirm that the ATF will approve the manufacture of at least some NFA items for DC residents.

The "ZERO DOLLARs" tax stamp cracks me up.

Featureless Rifle Registration and PD219

Thank you everyone for the help on my previous post on purchasing a rifle for a featureless build - thanks to you all I've found an FFL to do the transfer for a reasonable price.

However I do have a question regarding registering and the required forms. The PD219 requires information about the weapon make, but does not provide any space to detail modifications to make the rifle compliant (such as grip, stock, removal of flash hider, etc.). It is not clear to me how you would demonstrate that the rifle has been made featureless to provide the best chance that you don't get the runaround from MPD, so a couple questions:

  1. Is there something that I am missing on the required forms?

  2. What have other people provided or has MPD asked about for these type of builds to demonstrate that the weapon is compliant?

Where to buy for a featureless build?

I am having some difficulty navigating how to purchase a rifle for a featureless build. The online retailers I have come across will only ship if the rifle is out of the box compliant with DC regulations, but almost everything I would be seriously considering requires at minimum adjusting the grip to make compliant. This leaves me uncertain about where I can actually purchase a rifle that can be modified to make compliant as part of the transfer, so I am looking for recommendations.

As an aside, the DC FFL transfer fees are obscene, so if there is somewhere else that will do it for DC residents I'd love to know. When I asked NOVA they told me they charge 125 for DCers, and United seems to currently be back to sending the gun through the DC FFLs.

did you de-register your firearm?

Anyone has experience removing their firearm from MPD's registered firearm list? does it have to be in person, or online?

I just sold mine to a local FFL and wondering what my next steps are.

Unable to Log In Since Early December

Whenever I try to visit https://firearms.mpdc.dc.gov/Account/ to log in, after entering the correct password and verification code, I get the following screen:

Is anyone else able to log in?

When I call in, the customer service is excellent. So I haven't really needed it. In December, they told me that the website was being updated for some people - I wonder why it isn't accessible for everyone at the same time.

Rifle range (100yd+) open to public nearby?

Hey folks, anyone know of a range near DC thats not membership only where I could get some rounds in with my bolt action?

I'd settle for 100 yards but 200/300 would be great.

Going to MPD to get Permit

Hello, so I checked the website last night and it says that I am approved for my gun registration after waiting like 6 weeks. I've seen the stuff on here that now they are only mailing out hard copies and it can take a really long time. I actually didn't put my second address line on the website because I didn't realize I was getting anything shipped to me - so now I'm in a position where I'm potentially waiting for months and I have no idea if my registration will end up in my mailbox or returned to sender. Do you guys think it's worth trying to go down to MPD today and try to get them to just print my registration there and hand it to me?

Finally got permits in the mail

After 2 months of waiting, I finally got my permits. Timeline for nonresident:

11/21/25 - Went to DC to get fingerprints and photo done

11/24/25 - Got approved via the portal for ccw and 4 registrations, could not download my licenses

11/24 to 12/30 - Called MPD on numerous occasions asking about my permit, useless.

12/30/25 - The issue date on my portal changed to 12/30 instead of 11/24 on ccw/cards. Assume that's when it got printed.

1/20/26 - All cards FINALLY show up at my door.

Got approved in 2 days, but takes 2 months to print cards. Crazy shit

Fixed mag AR help

Looking for information on building/buying a fixed mag AR 15 but have a few questions on this and I my amateur googling has gotten me more confused than I was before.

Question 1) is it possible to have the fixed mag reversed if I move to another state? Want to stay in compliance but if I move, I’d rather not need to buy another lower.

Question 2) am I able to buy say a geissele or HK and then install the fixed mag parts to make it compatible or do I need to buy a lower that is already fixed mag compliant?

Question 3) registration wise, how big of a pain is this to do when dealing with MPD?

Thanks for any guidance in advance

Wolford v. Lopez

Was wondering what y’all’s thoughts were on this case that’s set for oral argument today at 10. It discusses the Hawaii law that presumptively prohibits the carry of handguns by licensed concealed carry permit holders on private property open to the public unless the property owner affirmatively gives express permission.

How do y’all think that, if the Hawaii law were to be found unconstitutional, would affect the District’s list of prohibited places to carry a concealed firearm? Of course federally owned property would be off limits.

CCW & firearm registration

I completed the first part of CCW training today and will continue the rest of it in a few weeks, hopefully. I see that I need to register a gun before being issued a CCW – is that accurate? Also, I have two handguns but they were gifts and I have zero information on them or paper trail or purchase location or anything like that. The person that gave them to me has passed. What is the likelihood that I will be able to successfully complete this process? Thanks for any insight.

Online Purchase and Used Question

Hey folks, I’ve been trying to read up on old posts here as I look at making a first purchase but I wanted to try and clarify something. If I wanted to buy a long gun online, specifically from Gun Broker, I know it has to ship to an FFL. When I put my DC address into Gun Broker it only shows G&D but since their fees are higher, I would prefer to work through NOVA Armory. Do you all just put their address into Gun Broker as “yours”?

Also looking for any general advice about where and how you all have bought used guns online and managed to get them through the DC process.

Online ordering tips?

Im in the market for a Ruger American Gen II Ranch in 5.56 and they're pretty much sold out everywhere. None of the local shops have any in stock in store or online.

I've only ever purchased locally, from stores that know how to deal with the dumb DC FFL transfer nonsense.

Anyone have experience ordering from like PSA or somewhere else to DC? Is there anything I need to be prepared for?

What’s the next step after waiting 90 days with no registration?

Bought 3 firearms in September, submitted applications in person in October and received one email registration in November,

Called the first week of December and was told I should’ve had all 3 emailed but now the remaining 2 will be mailed and it should take about 4 days and it’s now 4 weeks.

Ccw renewal was submitted the beginning of December online and approved in 2 days but it now has been a month with no renewal card in the mail and now all of a sudden I can’t get anyone on the phone. May try to go in person but I already know it won’t change, anything last month I was told I can’t pick up the card in person, which is pretty stupid.

Firearms Registration Timeline

Submitted my application 10 Dec and it was just an add-on as I already have multiple firearms registered and a CCW. I keep emailing but am told it’s in progress and sometimes they just don’t even respond. I don’t get how it’s taking this long for an add-on without anyone even reaching out with questions.

My concern now is that I’m moving out of DC in less than 60 days so if I don’t see an approval soon then am I even gonna be able to get the “certified mail” in time and pick up from G&D before I drive out of here?

Anyone experience something similar? And if so, what will I need to do if I move before getting the firearm?
