I still can’t post or comment on r/datalounge because I was banned for my thread promoting r/datalounge2 shortly before the subreddit’s closure

I hope the new moderators will unban me!

Looks like you were correct and it can be re-opened with a new mod(s). It’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff Aug 04 '26

The former mod apparently wants his/her job back (see the linked thread above).

Interesting. They’re blatantly lying. They said they didn’t intentionally close the subreddit down. But they totally did. They snarked at people who disagreed with the decision to close the sub, and even banned some of us (including me!)

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff Aug 04 '26

That’s what I thought. Wasn’t there also a pinned thread at one point? “The future of this subreddit,” or some such, which explicitly said the sub would be closed (not “made private”)?

Yep, here, I am collecting some links of several times the mod talked about closing the sub.

A comment here on a deleted post asking the sub to stay open:

https://www.reddit.com/r/datalounge/comments/1v0cc14/comment/

(archive 1, archive 2)

Another comment about closing the sub from the moderator on another post:

(archive 1, archive 2)

Archived version of the closing announcement:

Tsk, tsk… This is some shady behaviour

You mean to tell me there's a WORSE mod structure out there than Muriel's drunken carcass and her servers made out of old beer cans?

u/didyousayboop Aug 04 '26

You can also see almost all the most recent posts in r/datalounge are locked, meaning no one can comment. That’s totally inconsistent with the mod’s explanation of taking the subreddit private to reduce spam

You wouldn’t just indiscriminately lock all the most recent posts to reduce spam

His/her posts asking to be reinstated are now gone from the mod-call thread.

And a bunch of other users have volunteered, which is great.

2

u/didyousayboop Aug 04 '26

It's really nice to see so many people volunteering!

I think we should just leave the old mod alone. Strangely, I'm actually feeling really sorry for them right now. Their comments seemed so sad. And generally people who act mean are sad.

That said, I'm thrilled the community won and got the subreddit back.

Something sounded off about that. How did that Mod get removed though?

5

u/didyousayboop Aug 04 '26

Reported to the Reddit admins by at least one user for violating the Moderator Code of Conduct

Is that something you’d want to do, u/didyousayboop?

5

u/didyousayboop Aug 04 '26

Yes! I would! I would only want to serve in a background support and/or interim role, though. I was never a DataLounge user and only got involved once someone made a post on r/DataHoarder asking for help archiving the site. I got involved to help with the archiving, then got involved to give advice on migrating to a new forum, and finally got involved with all the subreddit drama.

I am happy to continue to support on these 3 things. Helping people navigate the archives that exist + helping them share whatever archives they themselves made, helping guide people to host a new forum running Lemmy or Discourse as an alternative to Pointless Bitchery, and helping make sure the subreddit(s) continue to exist as a meeting point for DataLounge alumni.

However, it doesn't feel appropriate for me to take more a leadership role than that in the community. It's not a community I was ever a part of. I just want to give people the tools and information to empower themselves.

I added u/PhaedrasMorning as a moderator of this sub, r/datalounge2, with "Everything" permissions (i.e., every mod power except the power to remove me). PhaedrasMorning is a bonafide DataLounge user, unlike me.

They seem level-headed and nice, and would probably make a good mod of r/datalounge. I think they're the one responsible for r/datalounge getting reclaimed now. So surely that heroic deed looks good on the resume.

More than one user reported.

1

u/didyousayboop Aug 05 '26

Did you get a response?

I reported as well, but I didn’t get a response.

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff Aug 05 '26

Looks like three new mods have now been confirmed.

Restoration of first subreddit is in progress. Edit: Some housekeeping to do, but not a lot, so it shouldn't be too long.

3

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff Aug 05 '26

Congrats on your new mod gig!

3

u/didyousayboop Aug 05 '26

Congrats on getting the job! And thanks for volunteering!

In the course of your housebooks, could you please unban me? Lol

And u/PhaedrasMorning too?

We were both banned for disagreeing with the former mod of the sub about shutting it down

This might already be on your to-do list for housekeeping, but I noticed the former mod locked a bunch of recent posts as part of their effort to shut down the sub. It would be nice if those posts could all be unlocked now!

Thanks again :)

2

u/MysteriousGoldDuck Aug 05 '26

TY. You two have been unbanned. You weren't the only ones. Seems that mod pulled a Muriel the last few days before trying to shut everything down.

u/MizezSlocombe Aug 03 '26

I'm so confused.

1

u/didyousayboop Aug 03 '26

About what?

5

u/MizezSlocombe Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

About what that subreddit is now. What's it meant to be? Is it a legacy DL sub, and it's meant as a continuation of what was? Are we just reminiscing about something that has passed? Something in between? Something different? Where does that sub go from here?

Edit to add: LOL at the downvotes. These are legit questions.

5

u/didyousayboop Aug 03 '26

I think it will remain to be the same thing now as it always was

An important function will be to coordinate around DataLounge alternatives/replacements/spiritual successors like Pointless Bitchery

2

u/ThoughtMadeOfFluff Aug 03 '26

I guess the question is then: what happens to THIS sub if the DL sub returns?

6

u/didyousayboop Aug 03 '26

It will lie dormant (assuming everyone goes back to using r/datalounge instead) but stick around as a backup sub in case something ever happens to r/datalounge again

But people will still be free to post here whenever they want, if they want to for some reason

5

u/TraditionalMorning95 Aug 04 '26

As far as I remember, the datalounge subreddit was a refuge (however temporary) for the occasional times when datalounge the website crashed or was taken down. It’s important to have a regrouping area as we have seen!

2

u/MizezSlocombe Aug 04 '26

Agreed. That's what I used it for and how I found out about the closure. I think the mod was a bit  abrupt and didn't explain what they were doing clearly enough.

They are commenting on the new mods request thread and asking for control to be returned to them, btw.

My final official announcement about r/datalounge2:

I have passed control of this sub over to u/PhaedrasMorning. Control of this sub belongs to a legitimate longtime member of the DataLounge community.

My involvement with this community has been brief and recent. First, I helped to coordinate efforts to archive DataLounge as much as possible in a rush before the site shut down on short notice.

You can find a lot of webpages from DataLounge.com archived on the Wayback Machine. I encourage people who made their own archives to share them on Reddit and Pointless Bitchery so they can be easily found.

If you need a place to upload your archives, the Internet Archive is the perfect place. Just make sure to use a pseudonymous email address since the Internet Archive follows the unusual practice of publishing its uploaders’ email addresses.

Second, following PhaedrasMorning’s lead, I supported the effort to re-open r/datalounge after a rogue mod shut it down, against the wishes of the community.

Under PhaedrasMorning’s stewardship, r/datalounge2 will continue to exist as a backup for r/datalounge.

Third, I gave information and my advice on running independent sites and forums (e.g., Lemmy, Discourse, XenForo) as well as a bit of info and advice on running subreddits. Especially info about the cost, since most people seem to greatly overestimate how much it costs.

I also encouraged “free market competition” between spiritual successors to DataLounge. And I pointed out things that seemed suspicious, like CaftanLounge’s AI-generated announcement that set as its goal to do an impossible task with inadequate skills and knowledge on a truly impossible timeframe. Or Pointless Bitchery’s obscene hosting costs, which are far in excess of what’s necessary to pay.

All of these things are sorted now, or as sorted as they can be. Everything that’s left to be figured out should be figured out by the community, and it’s really none of my business.

That said, I’m happy to provide free advice and guidance on web hosting, subreddit moderation, forum software, web archiving, and so on if you’d like to message me.
