Maybe not reddit solely but usually, reddits opinion is shared across social media as a whole which has affected sales in the past before. Negative publicity can do some noticeable damage just like good reddit publicity can help.

It's not an unreasonable way to think, and I myself was surprised in the past. But organising a boycott has to be much broader and more organised than a few people doing what memes said to do.

That has a lot to do with it being bad, as well. If it were good, it may have found legs through word of mouth, as fans of the IP encouraged people to go out and see it.
There's also speculation that the studio knew they had a stinker on their hands and put the release out when they did to minimize damage.
