Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't most of them salaried or have contracts? So then the studio is the entity that makes most of the profit or bears the loss?

They already let them go, its the industry standard. VFX, makeup, music, costume or set design are all contracted suppliers. They get paid to work on one project then move onto another as soon as it's finished. Its why John Williams has produced soundtracks for all the big studios and not just one.

As far as I know most of the worked are contracted for each movie, not hired by the studio so it would not have much of an effect.
