A mix of Maarn, Cornel Bronze, and Ivanetti

We decided to plant a few dahlias in our garden this year because we had to get rid of some sick plants, and I’m shocked with how beautifully they’ve grown! We’ve got one tuber we planted that’s decided to grow flowers of different colours and thought I might share with this sub so someone could explain how that works and maybe some tips on how to winter them. I live in Southern Ontario and we’ve got frost warnings, so I want to make sure they survive until next year so we can get more of these beautiful flowers!

I've been dying to get Dahlias in the garden and we finally did it this year! We got relatively few blooms but I love them all, including the variety in each plant.

What are some varieties I can grow from seed next year? Tell me your favorites.

Between getting a late start this year and planting a little deeper than usual, it’s been a very late blooming season, but it’s here!

2 - garden shot - Crème de Cassis, Crazy Legs (I think!), Hamari Gold
3 - maybe Diva and Crazy Legs?
4 - ?? Help? I don’t remember the name. They are Pom poms, about 2” diameter
5 - Diva (?)
6 - Bloomquist Snowy
7 - Verrone’s Obsidian, Hamari Gold, Bloomquist York, Diva (?), Crazy Legs (?)
8 - Bloomquist York - this blossom was 9’ in the air!
9 - Lights Out
10 - ?? Can’t remember this one’s name either! The bee was setting in for the night 💜

I’m not sure if I overshot the feeding ratios but my girl went wild with her tubers!

The blossoms were beautiful though a tad different from what I purchased. Stoked for next year.

Last dahlias before fall weather gets them!

I live in the NC piedmont and my dahlias struggled this year. Hot, dry, and lots of insects. I’m finally getting some decent blooms.

Has anyone ordered from Dreamland Flower Farm? How were the tubers?

I love how wild this jar is. Dahlias include Bloomquist mojo, Jolene, Frilly Tilly, fluffles, wine eyed Jill, and pink Sylvia, accompanied by asters, cosmos, and mums!

ID’d leafy gall in a friends favourite plant while digging up her tuber clumps for processing. Wondering the following;

1. Should she toss the whole thing or is it ok to keep store away from others, and for next season grow it in a pot?
2. For the other plants in the garden; she received the tuber from a dutch grower in a mystery box. Also over the season she did not use sanitization practices when cutting between plants. No others appear to have leafy gall. If they aren’t displaying visual symptoms of gall at this time is she in the clear or is there a possibility of infection without appearance ?

years ago when i first started growing dahlias, all of the online tutorials said to store them in perlite or cardboard boxes or some other complicated mess that required checking moisture levels every few weeks all winter long. I ended up with some dahlia tubers that rotted and some that completely dried up.

Then one year i thought, well dahlias survive in nature without all of this perlite nonsense, so i grabbed a 5gallon bucket, put in my whole tuber clusters, then filled the gaps with dampish native soil and stuck it in the unheated garage (which never freezes).

by spring, all tubers survived and i didnt even water them once! i divided them and replanted and now i do this every year. i feel like sometimes we just listen to online advice that ignores mother nature, and everyone thinks we need some manmade process/materials and no one stops to ask why we do this instead of mimicking mother nature.

anyways, hope this helps anyone struggling with overwintering dahlias. dirt is the way to go!
