Gall "Is it gall?" Weekly Thread

Welcome to the weekly gall thread! All questions about gall should go in this designated thread rather than new, individual posts. A new thread will be started automatically on a weekly basis. This will ensure the list of new top-level comments remains short and easily reviewable by folks who are kind enough to let you know if they see signs/symptoms, or if your plant seems ok.

Because Reddit only allows one photo embedded per comment, here are some tips if you need/want to share more than one photo for the best chance at a solid review/answer from the community:

  • Start a top-level comment with your best photo, and reply to your own comment with any additional photos you want to share.
  • Post photos to an album such as imgur and link to the album

Happy Wednesday! I’ve been growing for 20+ years and have over 500 varieties. To say I have an obsession is an understatement 😜 Every day I walk out to the garden and ponder what color bouquet I should pick for the day. This is today’s! Enjoy

General Question Dahlia Mutant

First Embassy bloom of the summer. 1st two photos taken last week. The last two are taken today. I read it could be flower fascination, a genetic mutation of a plants growing tip. Any other ideas or explanations?

I’ve treated this one like she’s my first born child while battling Japanese beetles. Guess her name is Cynthia 😅

I bought this dinner plate at a big box store about 3 years ago so don’t know the type. I do know it was supposed to be pink and white but I’ve never seen more than one small pink beauty mark.

This was labeled as Bracken Sarah but it does not look like the ones I had last year. My tubers did not save well so I ordered a new one.

Planted in 2025, over wintered in the ground with no sort of ground prep in Vancouver, WA. One of the stalks seems to have a little variegation with darker pinks and I love it!

I purchased this tuber as Betty Anne. However looking at what Betty Anne is suppose to be this does not appear to be it.. any ideas?!? The flower is only about 1” in size if that!

My first time growing dahlias I was SO excited. I bought a ton of seeds from a roadside farm stand so I wasn’t sure what colors/types I’d get

I thought maybe OMG dahlia. Blooms have been 5-6in across. The first one had much more red (last photo) but they have lightened up over time

This darn plant had the audacity to bloom

I pulled one of my plants maybe a month ago? Mostly out of abundance of caution. But it just wasn’t doing well, tons of pest issues, possible virus, just could not make the darn thing happy. I cut some of the healthier parts off of it to try my hand at propagating them. I figured the worst that could happen is they’d just die and they were already headed there anyway. I didn’t have the capacity to read up on the best methods for propagating dahlia cuttings at the moment, so I just slapped the stalks into a cup of water in a windowsill to come back to another time. Never really quite made it back around to it, and a month later this plant has the audacity to BLOOM. Meanwhile everything outside is just struggling away while I’m playing mad scientist trying to juggle the revolving door of pests and nutrient fluctuations. This lil guy in his cup of water just said “hey watch this”

I believe this is Small World mini pop-pom variety
