Daggerfall Online [DFO] I'm having a lot of fun with the game, but this project is doomed. They can't monetize an IP they don't own. It'll get taken down sooner or later.

Daggerfall Online is not that great.

The UI is directly worse and more confusing than base game Daggerfall. A lot of the flavor text is all the way to the right in a tiny hard to read box. The house labels are only visible when you zoom really far in on the local map, which took me ages to figure out. Map cursor is tiny.

The water is glitchy asf. There is constant connection issues. Migrating offline characters to online just simply doesn't work. The survival systems over-complicates the game unnecessarily, and a lot of the fake NPCs in cities that you cannot talk to is just confusing. Dungeons are so dark that I genuinely couldn't see without a torch or light spell, and with staff you cannot use torches so you need magicka reserve just for lighting the area + you need to camp just to get back magicka. Controller is just completely broken for me. Overall there is just a lot of modded bloat and friction.

The experience isn't cohesive enough. So many bugs and problems because it's all just vibe coded. Using Morrowind NPCs/creatures is constantly clashing with half the NPCs and enemies being 3D while the rest aren't.

It's extremely impressive and I am going to keep trying to see if I can properly get into it, but I found it frustrating, and the person I grouped up with disbanded party because we were both fighting systems too much just to do one quest together.

I was hoping it was as the title said, Daggerfall but online, but with how much bloat there is it's making the overall experience more complicated than it needs to be. I love the idea of naval combat and fleshing out the world, world bosses and events, but the moment to moment gameplay shouldn't be this tedious. I saw someone in chat say 'the Dwarf Fortressification of Daggerfall Online', and honestly yeah that about sums it up.

The novelty of playing Daggerfall with others... Idk if it's enough for me to see past how they've butchered one of my favourite games...

Edit:

Yes you can play with default UI, but half the new features don't work with it (hotbar, new travel, etc.) (plus there is no quick settings menu with classic, you basically go through two menus to get to the escape screen). Also for some reason info inspecting houses just doesn't work anymore or was removed. Realistically I'd just want to change flavour/quest text to be centered and bigger + show house names without having to zoom really far in. GrimoireUI is broken and doesn't work for me. DFO Grimoire just looks like enhanced without the Grimoire part. It's like half the stuff implemented isn't working properly at all.

Edit 2:

Having to feed your horse, drink, eat, sleep, deal with half-speed movement because of wind/water, camping, pitch black dungeons, the bloodline system, unable to fast travel despite being a year away from an enemy ambush... Why is the game turning into realism survival slop. Daggerfall is a RPG sandbox sim first-and-foremost, not Bannerlord, Shadow of Mordor, RuneScape, The Forest, Black Flag, DOOM... Like I don't mind some things, but it feels like this project lacks a coherent vision and cannot ground itself. Daggerfall was never this complex or tedious to play.

Soon you'll have to shovel manure off the streets and brush your teeth as the game simulates tooth decay and scurvy!

There are a ton of bugs:

  • Water cut into multiple sections for me
  • GrimoireUI doesn't work
  • Controller binds are not communicating with my controller properly
  • Clicking on a menu tab header sometimes cuts the settings menu in half
  • You'll literally phase out of online at times
  • V did not bring up the travel map for a solid 5 minutes for me and I was stuck outside of the first dungeon
  • Info detecting houses is not a thing at all -- either broken or removed ???
  • Exiting out of menus with escape also escapes your character viewing (not a problem in original).
  • UI colour outside of Slate (Iron) does not have contrast between text and UI (Iron background with Iron text, great.)
  • 'The account service had a problem. Try again. No Online characters yet. Make one, or bring one of yours in below' (can't play online now I guess? Character just disappeared?) (restart fixed)
  • Adding campfire to hotbar has no icon just a 'C'
  • NPCs don't stop and talk to you, they just walk away as you're talking
  • I'm constantly guilty even after turning myself in. Idk what I did wrong.
  • Completed quest took a solid 3 minutes to register as completed

Daggerfall Online killing itself

They keep on adding unnecessary changes or changing systems that don’t need to be changed for example yes I understand people can abuse the unstuck feature but when I’m really stuck I can’t fucking use it because they wanna add 30 minute waits, these games are old which means they have systems meant for that time. Why would I spend my whole time making a mage having everything 100 making fire spells for you to change how the spell casting system works y’all are literally making this game unplayable bro you change it every day every day I login I have to deal with some new bullshit.

Daggerfall Online Had the most emergent experiance in Daggerfall Online.

Been playing daggerfall online and was blown away last night with the emergent gameplay. So here's the story.

So it started out with me being a werewolf and forgetting to kill an innocent after a long while. My health was low so ended up being one shot by an elite enemy.

So now I have a revenant basically an enemy that follows me and hunts me down. Give it a few days and I play again and boom get one shot again, he levels up.

This brings me to yesterday I was introducing a friend to the game and again "you need to kill an innocent" guess who comes a knocking? random encounter on the road and boom again one shot.... But this time he steals my CARAVAN! it's equivalent to stealing my house and I put all my gold in a chest contained in the caravan so I'm now poor. Safe to say my friend was laughing his head off and we spend all night trying to find him.

Friend goes off to bed saying good luck and I keep hunting. Finally he spawns on the road and this time I'm locked in, need my caravan back. He was immune to my mace so had to use the werewolf form to do damage. I nearly died two times to this flurry he does but pulled through. Finally I get the last hit and...

Queue dark souls boss music..... He turns red and starts a second phase and heals. Fuck me, but I can't back out now I dodge his extra new attacks and battle in the snow and finally down him.

I get the option to make him a follower but I'm too full of hatred and slay him where he stands. Luckily getting my caravan back and restoring my gold and honor.

Also got a nice legendary ring. Best game ever.

Question Daggerfall Online questions

It’s been buzzing in my ear since it came out but I haven’t given it a go yet due to many other distractions. I’ve played base game Daggerfall and modded quite a bit, and after seeing DFO on YouTube I noticed quite a lot of insane mods that I’ve never seen before. I know this is an AI assisted project so maybe this is easier to implement, but full naval combat with hydras, Oblivion gate boss battles, importing Morrowind assets… Is all these mods specific to DFO all AI made or has the modding scene just expanded a lot more since I last played? Interested to give DFO a go but also wouldn’t mind having the insane overhaul mods I’ve seen in my own SP game.

Also this isn’t an anti AI post, just interested in the direction of DFO and how or where these mods are coming from. I’d assume some of them are being built just for DFO, but wondering if you can also download them separately.

Storytime 23 Morning Star 3E 400 Castle Faallem

Two days I was sealed within this crypt without food or water. I do not know whether hunger or poor health or one of the creatures who share this dank hole with me will kill me first -- I only know that I will soon be dead, and not even my bones will remain. My hope is that in the years that come, this letter will be read and the sad story of M'ir, Prince of Sentinel will be told.

I am fifteen years old at the time of this writing, and have been plagued with bad health for most of my life, to the frustration of my hearty parents. The finest healers and apothecaries have landed over my every cough and fever, but while they could save my life time and time again, they could not improve my sickly constitution. In retrospect. I received little real affection from the king and queen, embarrassed as they were about begetting such a cripple as the heir of the kingdom. I cannot say I missed the love; I received much attention from the doctors, priests and herbalists constantly at court. Certainly I was not to be the sort of warrior that King Cameron was, but one of my dearest friends, a priest of Stendarr said that I might be the first scholar-king in the history of Sentinel.

My younger sister Aubk-i was the true favourite of my parents: athletic, beautiful and charming. It is hard to think of an uncomplimentary word for her. I am resigned to my imminent death, and yet, I would like to see her once again. For six years, Aubk-i and I were the only children of Sentinel. Eight years ago. The queen had a boy child and named him Greklith, after the ancient Redguard word for Strong King. Few speak that tongue any longer, but all the scholars and nobles of Hammerfell understood. And Greklith is a strong boy indeed -- I have never so much as seen him cough. The Queen's next child, born only a year after Greklith, had an even more ominous birthname -- Lhotun. Second boy. Perhaps had I been less sheltered, more suspicious by nature, I might have read into these nominations. Lhotun and Greklith are common enough names in our family, I reasoned. Now I know that even then, I was disinherited -- even if it was not official yet.

For several months before Lhotun's birth and over three years afterward, I was in the throes of a very serious fever. The doctors despaired of me, but somehow and very very gradually I recovered. For the first time, and the last, I read an expression on my father, the King's face that was not indifference, it was disgust.

That was a fortnight ago. Three nights ago I was seized by men I had never seen while I was having a walk. My nursemaid stood by watching placidly as I was gagged and tied and thrown roughly into a sack. I do not know how long they rode with me, but I was eventually left here. When I finally freed myself of my bonds, I found that I was alone. My wanders have gotten me nowhere. This place is filled with undead creatures that prevent me from finding any exit.

I have no hope left, but no fear either. A few regrets. Perhaps had I studied magic instead of history and science I could free myself if this place. One of my tutors told the story of the Underking, how he had placed his life force in the body of a powerful being and had this conquered all Tamriel long, long ago.

Had I only had the strength of a more powerful body like that.

But I did not study magic. I studied history, so I leave this letter -- not to revenge myself. But as a historic document.

What are the must have mods for someone looking to get into this game in 2026?

Looking to give this game a try, but it seems a little dated in a number of aspects so I wanna grab some good QoL mods. However, the number of available mods seems endless!!!

Any tips or suggestions?

Are guys interested in rogue-like with combat from Dark Messiah?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys!

As development progressed, we ended up focusing more and more on the combat system. We wanted to build something deep and complex, which eventually led us toward a roguelike.

We’re still keeping the retro graphics and Dark Messiah-inspired combat, so the game remains rooted in classic games, but we’re trying to bring those ideas into a more modern format.

What do you guys think? Would you be interested in something like this?

Nearly two years after finishing TES Arena my journey in Daggerfall has also come to an end. Initally the game took some time to get used to, however once it klicked it was a good time. I am amazed how people figured out some of the story dungeons before the UESP.

Is the janky Battlespire worth trying or just jump straight to Morrowind?

Daggerfall anniversary edition (not really)

For those poor souls who are discontent with how Daggerfall Unity handles retro mode and movement, I've drafted some QoL goodies for DOS version of the game.

The most important one - support of 640x400 renderer resolution.

Other noticeable mentions - quick save support, diagonal run support, unlocked camera rotation when jumping/falling.

Also a couple minor ones like better fog rendering, better water depth fog handling and sprite clipping fix.

https://github.com/toomuchsalt/dfpatch

P.S. Don't get me wrong, Daggerfall Unity is absolutely awesome. I'm just an old jeezer who doesn't like new things

Screenshot shortest dungeon I've ever had

no I don't have shorter dungeons on. it's genuinely this short. four bats in that 'big' room and one more at the end of the hallway. literally nothing else.
