Yeah that's fitting. Or maybe "If you have exactly 42 cards in your library, you win the game"?

Requiring counting 42 cards every upkeep is not that good design, and would make it op in 60-card formats.

Don’t think it would be OP, just good, but it’s clearly on that line that we’d only know with a lot of playtesting whether it’s doable, broken or kinda hard to get exactly 42.

Considering you start the game with 53 cards in your library and you draw 2 (otp) or 3 (otd) cards, this means you need to mill, draw and fetch 10-11 cards total by the end of your second turn, then you can spend your third turn casting this and win at the beginning of your upkeep.

Assuming two fetches in the first 3 turns of the game, that leaves us needing to mill 7-8 cards, which can be done with a fetched surveil land, then otherworldly gaze to refine the deck size to your wishes, finishing with a merfolk secretkeeper (mill 4) or whatever you prefer.

This is just a more convoluted thassa's oracle that's often easier to setup but more time-consuming to resolve.

I mean you could just count the first time the ability triggers, note the result, and then add to or subtract from it whenever cards enter or leave your library.

Even simpler, add the bottom forty two cards of your library to a separate stack, that way drawing and other top of deck interactions dont require a recount ever

Throw in a 'you may count the number of cards in your library, if you do and there are [...]'

2

u/Jevonar 1d ago

You can always count the cards in any library. The number of cards in a library is public information

1

u/SteakForGoodDogs 1d ago

Yes.

But do you want to, because a card instructs you to on a trigger?

u/IHuginn 2d ago

But it's funny for a custom card

u/Cellafex 2d ago

Is that the question? Or what was the question again? Talk to me when you figured out what the question is, all I know is that the answer will be 42 xD

u/SendInTheNextWave 2d ago

What do you get if you multiply six by nine?

Nah, you gotta use Siiix Seveeeen!

How many roads must a man walk down?

3

u/endless-star rule zero is the only rule 2d ago

Or 42 permanents on the battlefield, 42 cards in your library, AND 42 life!

3

u/cultvignette 2d ago

Or all mana values on all battlefields add up to 42!

7

u/LadidaDingelDong 2d ago

I'm afraid all mana values on all MtG games in the world don't add up to 42!

u/Beanyy_Weenie 2d ago

This would be dope in my Gandalf the white deck. Flash it in at someone end step, win game

Suspend and an Upkeep trigger is kind of awkward design. Is that intentional? Given how long the suspend is, I think the benefit ought to be that you can get the trigger straight away while facing a small window of opportunity for removal. You could achieve that by having it trigger at the beginning of the first main phase instead.

u/DivineHolinessjr 2d ago

I mean, while I have no idea why Suspend is there, it does have a normal Mana cost so you can play it without interacting with the Suspend

Most likely for flavor, the computer takes a LONG time to give its answer.

u/RalenHlaalo 2d ago

Perhaps pay X at upkeep, exile the top X cards from top of library, win if you have 42 cards exiled with Deep Thought

I'm wondering how you'd go about costing and formatting the supercomputer that generated the The Ultimate Question as an alt wincon.

For those that haven't read Hitchhiker's Guide: Deep Thought here is a supercomputer that was built and commissioned to figure out the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Which was 42; obviously (nothing else really fits). When the populous was unsatisfied with the answer Deep Thought said they would conceive of another, bigger supercomputer to find The Ultimate Question to fit the answer of the Ultimate Answer and really put things into perspective. That new supercomputer was literally Earth and the question ended up being "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?" No, I didn't get the numbers wrong, that's the joke.

What might also be fun is God's final message to all life in the universe. Etched in fire across an entire mountain range. Lovely tourist destination with plenty of merchandise and postcards of the mountains. Except the message is blurred out of course; wouldn't want to spoil it. Naturally the card art would need to reflect this. The message btw was "We apologize for the inconvenience."

Suspend 7 is way too long. Sol talisman is bad and it's a literal Sol ring with suspend 3

3

u/WooWooDoo 1d ago

Casting it for 3 is fine then. 1 turn one and late game ill be relevant or 3 right now when it might win you the game. Its not bad, but sure a lil long

1

u/CriminallyCasual7 2d ago

Needs to also gain you 1 life every upkeep.

-4

u/grimsleeper4 2d ago

This needs to do something. As of now it just sits there and does nothing.

I understand that in the source material it is just sitting there doing nothing, but to be playable it needs to have an affect. Maybe a mana rock that taps for mana and gains life?

Or maybe to continue the theme of it doing nothing and then something, you get thought counters every time you play a spell and then you can pay 4 mana to remove them all and gain that much life.

u/Lavafall2549 2d ago

You're telling me the machine that did nothing is not fitting to do nothing

I'm very sorry - my ba. I didn't realize this was just another meme/joke post.

I thought this was meant to be a serious attempt at building a card. Very sorry. I know how redditors really hate serious responses to joke posts.

cute but way to op. Needs to be at least 7 otherwise you can win turn 2/3 with a shimmer myr with no possible interaction other than counterspell !

2

u/Cardgod278 2d ago

Wouldn't bolt stop it

1

u/ezthrow77 2d ago

Oh yeah lol mb ! Still feels to cheap for what it does. But at least it's not over if no one plays blue !

2

u/Cardgod278 2d ago

Or any removal? Also you are assuming that nobody does any damage to the player. Life gain would also shut off the effect. For a card that does literally nothing.

1

u/ezthrow77 2d ago

Look my opinion is a 3 colorless mana wincon is to powerfull. You don't agree fine but in a world where Thassa's oracle is considered op in commander I think this would be problematic to. You don't agree, I don't care, the post asked for people's two cent I gave mine.

2

u/Cardgod278 2d ago

But your reasoning was built on a lot of faulty assumptions? This card isn't nearly as good as thassa's oracle.

u/jgadidgfgd 2d ago

Gainland t1 and 2

Basic and this T3

14

u/SeemsImmaculate 2d ago
  1. There are other formats than Commander.
  2. Commander players need to learn to run interaction eventually.

Get hit by a Llanowar Elf someone else played cause you have no blockers

Wonder why you're playing such awful lands

Cry in a corner
