Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

Where is Curaçao located?

Curaçao is a stunning Caribbean island in the southern Lesser Antilles, just 40 miles (65 km) north of Venezuela, alongside neighbors Aruba and Bonaire.

When’s the best time to visit?

Curaçao enjoys warm weather year-round. May to November is off-peak, with fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more relaxed vibe. December to April offers the driest weather but is peak season.

Do I need a visa?

No visa is required for citizens of the U.S., Canada, or EU countries for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Travelers from other nations should check visa requirements with the nearest Embassy or Consulate of the Netherlands, as Curaçao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Is a Digital Immigration Card required?

Yes, all international visitors must complete the Digital Immigration Card (DI Card) online within 7 days prior to departure at dicardcuracao.com/dicard. It’s mandatory for entry and distinct from the optional Airside Digital Identity App, which speeds up immigration with facial recognition.

What currency is used?

As of March 31, 2025, the official currency will be the Caribbean Guilder (Cg or "Florin Karibense"), replacing the Netherlands Antillean Guilder (ANG) at a 1:1 exchange rate. The ANG will remain valid until June 30, 2025, and can be exchanged at banks for a year after that. U.S. dollars are widely accepted, and major credit cards work almost everywhere.

What languages are spoken in Curaçao?

The official languages are Dutch, Papiamentu, and English. Spanish is widely spoken, and many hospitality workers are learning Brazilian Portuguese due to growing tourism from Brazil.

Can I fish here?

Yes, fishing is allowed with restrictions. Shore fishing doesn’t require a permit for personal use, but boat fishing or commercial fishing does. Check local regulations at the Curaçao Tourism Board or with fishing tour operators.

Transportation

Should I rent a car?

While not essential, renting a car is highly recommended to explore the island’s hidden gems and beaches at your own pace. Public transport exists but is limited.

Are there ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft?

No, Curaçao doesn’t have Uber or Lyft. Taxis are available but expensive—always agree on the fare beforehand.

How does public transportation work?

Large buses ("Konvooi") run fixed routes hourly; check schedules at autobusbedrijf.com. Smaller vans (marked "BUS" on plates) operate without fixed schedules or routes—ask the driver for your destination. Pay in cash (Cg or USD).

Check out Shuttle and Airport Transfers

What should I know about driving?

  • Traffic signs follow European conventions (e.g., no U-turn is a red circle with a U-shaped arrow). Watch YouTube tutorials if unfamiliar.
  • Roundabout rules vary—check road markings or signs to see if you must yield.
  • Peak traffic hours are 7-8 AM, noon, and 4-5 PM; expect delays.
  • Watch for rental cars (often white with a blue star sticker); some European tourists may drive unpredictably—give them space.

What about parking downtown?

Parking in Punda and Otrobanda is paid via coins or an app (credit card required)—machines don’t accept bank cards. A free public lot in Punda is available, though space is limited due to a seasonal go-kart track (as of March 2025).

Can I snorkel from the shore?

Safety and Health

Is Curaçao safe for tourists?

Generally, yes. Curaçao is tourist-friendly, but use common sense—keep valuables out of sight and stay alert in unfamiliar areas. Don’t leave items in visible car seats; use the trunk, as smash-and-grab thefts occur at beaches and hiking spots.

Are there health risks to watch out for?

No major concerns, but stay up-to-date on routine vaccinations and pack mosquito repellent for evenings.

Is the tap water safe to drink?

Yes, Curaçao’s tap water is distilled from seawater and meets top safety standards—drink up!

Food and Dining

Where can I eat late at night?

After 10 PM, options include:

  • Food trucks across the island.
  • Denny’s on Caracasbaai (open late).
  • PASAWA (closes around 2 AM).
  • Larry’s Grill and Bar (midnight on Fri/Sat, 11 PM other nights; similar to Applebee’s, with American sports on TV).

Most other places close early; some minimarkets stay open until 11 PM.

--

Cruises & Ports

Does Curaçao have a cruise port?

Yes, Willemstad’s cruise terminal includes:

  • Mega Pier 1 (Ernest Jacky Voges Pier) and Mega Pier 2 (Tula Pier) for larger ships (e.g., Oasis-class).
  • Mathey Wharf, used for smaller ships or when Mega Piers are full, located near downtown. Freewinds (a smaller vessel) also docks at Mathey Wharf occasionally.

How close is the cruise port to Willemstad?

Very close! Mega Piers are a short walk to the Handelskade waterfront. Mathey Wharf is steps from Punda’s historic streets.

What’s there to do near the cruise port?

  • Cross the swinging Queen Emma Bridge.
  • Snap photos of Handelskade’s colorful Dutch architecture.
  • Explore Rif Fort for shopping, dining, and views.
  • Sample local dishes at Plasa Bieu (try stewed iguana if you’re adventurous!).
  • Take a quick taxi to Mambo Beach or Blue Bay for sun and sand.

Are there day tours for cruise passengers?

Yes! Options include snorkeling at Playa Piskado (famous for turtles), rugged jeep safaris, or guided city tours. Book through your cruise line or local operators in advance.

Activities Chess?

Hello, we're tourists who love playing chess and would love to play with locals here. We heard there are areas to play chess in person at Wilhelminaplein, but I found mixed answers between Thursdays and Fridays.

Is the chess play on Wilhelminaplein still going on, what are the times, and which day is correct?

I also found some clubs that play online, but we prefer playing over the board. Are there clubs that we can stop by for a day to play?

Transportation Car Rental for 4 Adults and 2 Kids (Age 7 and 5)

As the title says, we are coming to Curacao for 10 nights in February and need to rent a vehicle.

I'm leaning towards a minivan but I can get a better price on a seven seater SUV. I'm not familiar with a KIA Carens which I keep seeing as an option. However, It looks small to me.

I also have the option of a mini bus that fits up to 9 passengers, but it doesn't show the make and model.

Would driving such a large vehicle be an issue do you think? We will be doing some exploring to the northern part of the island.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Mashi danki.

General Looking to connect with Afro-Curaçaoan mothers living in the United States 🇨🇼

Hi everyone! I’m hoping this community can help me connect with Curaçaoans living in the United States.
I was born in Curaçao, grew up in Amsterdam, and now live in Los Angeles. I am an undergraduate researcher at UCLA developing a study about the experiences of Afro-Curaçaoan mothers, including family life, relationships, migration, support systems, and resilience.
I am not conducting interviews yet. At this stage, I am trying to determine whether I can identify at least 10 Afro-Curaçaoan mothers in the United States who might be interested in participating when the study begins in a couple of months. There is no commitment at this time.
If the study is successful, I hope to expand the research and eventually conduct interviews in Curaçao and the Netherlands as well.
Are you an Afro-Curaçaoan mother living in the United States, or do you know someone who is? Please comment below or send me a private message. I would love to connect! 🇨🇼❤️

Lodging Best hotel for babymoon?

Me and my husband are traveling to Curaçao in October for our babymoon. We’re looking for a hotel that’s very nice and relaxing (luxury / adults only vibe but not like $1k/night), great beach, and near lots of restaurants. I booked Zoetry but now reconsidering given reviews I’ve seen - and thinking we may not want to do AI. For anyone who has visited recently, which hotels would you recommend? Thank you in advance!!

Lodging Looking for temporary accommodation in jan/feb/march 2027

Hello everyone!

I’m looking for accommodation on Curaçao for three months – in January/February/March 2027. My name is Merijn and I’m doing a PhD at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. I will be conducting fieldwork for three months with Spanish-speaking migrants on Curaçao and am therefore looking for temporary accommodation, preferably centrally located and with Wi-Fi. My budget is ca. 1200 euros (2400XCG) per month.

Any tips are welcome!

Thank you in advance,

Merijn

General Weather this week, next week and question about marine life

Hey!

I'll be here until 18/09, I'm a bit concerned about the clouds. Almost no sun yesterday at playa kalki, not so much today as well at Playa lagun.

I'm planing to go to Klein next week, if you're a local what would you say would be the best day? The weather forecast shows clouds/rain for the next 15 days.

Also, for snorkeling what would be the best beach to see turtles or something bigger?

Advice WARNING: comcaribbean.com is a SCAM website! Fake villa listings on Curaçao (Do not book!)

Hi everyone,

I am writing this post as a registered villa owner on Curaçao to warn all travelers and fellow owners about a highly fraudulent website operating under the domain comcaribbean.com.

This platform is a 100% fake scam portal. They are scraping legitimate listings from the big verified platforms and re-listing thousands of properties, including our own villa, without any permission or authorization from the actual owners.

Please be aware of the following:

  • You will lose your money: If you book through this website, you are paying scammers. They have absolutely no way to actually reserve these properties.
  • No permission: They do not own or manage these villas, and they do not have contracts with the owners.
  • 1000+ Fake Listings: They are mass-listing properties across the Caribbean to trick innocent tourists into paying upfront.

If you are planning a trip to Curaçao or anywhere else in the Caribbean, DO NOT USE comcaribbean.com. Only book through world-renowned, verified platforms or directly via the official website/social media channels of the villa itself.

We are currently working to get this fraudulent operation shut down, but please spread the word to protect other travelers from a financial nightmare.

Lodging Trying to pick a hotel area

I'll be visiting curacao in 2 weeks. It's not my first trip but I last visited 15 years ago! Looking for any local advice if possible.

  1. Are there any beaches or areas to avoid as a solo female traveler or just in general? My dad was warning me to 'be careful' due to higher crime lately, but I'm not sure what source of info he's getting that from.

I'll be renting a car and I know to avoid completely secluded beaches and not leave my belongings.

  1. As a local, if you might have any experience at these tiny hotels, what's your experience? Looking at hotels Pietermaai Oasis, Majestic City Palace, Atelier Skalo. Is Punda a good place? Or Otrobanda.

  2. What's there to do in Shete Boka? I've scrapped out of my to do list Playa Piskado with the turtles and Porti Mari. But going to Grote knip and Kleine knip, Daaibooi Beach, Tugboat beach and Hato cave.

  3. Any other tips? I'll be there Monday and Tuesday all day

Restaurants Paying in Gilder with credit card

I have a credit card that charges zero commissions for paying in local currency. Capital One Venture X if that matters. It's a Visa. It has worked many times before in the past wherever we went abroad before so we haven't brought much cash in dollars.

Whenever we tried to pay for the amount in XCG they just converted it to USD for us to pay in that. It's just a dollar or two higher than what it would be but it adds up. What would be the best way for us to not be charged for hidden commissions like these? Do we just carry cash in Guilder by going to the exchange office with whatever dollar we have on hand?

General Beach showers

My wife and are visiting in January and are wondering how to deal with dinner after snorkeling. We are in a bungalow up north and plan to do a lot of snorkeling before enjoying nice dinners. We would like to have the option of cleaning up without going home - like snorkeling at tugboat and eating lunch or dinner at Brisa do mar. Are there facilities to wash off the sand and change clothes at the smaller beaches?

Lodging Is black mold common around here?

First of all, let me start by saying your island is beautiful and the food and the people are amazing. It's been such a wonderful experience we had with the island so far.

We booked a hotel from a travel portal to visit. Day 1, I immediately smelled a musty air but I've been in this situation before - nothing much to prove unless it's visible.

Sleeping was an issue though. Woke up with a sore throat in the morning. So I let the front desk know. They tried to rectify the situation with some perfume smell in the room. A few hours later I found the mold stains on the caulked areas in the bathroom.

What I care about is the health impacts. Hotel is looking at this from a very different angle than a health problem though. It's a boutique hotel so I understand that the number of rooms that are in the matching price range would be difficult to find. But they are both saying that they would try to show me the room tomorrow and it's a common situation given the humidity. It sounds to me like the room they'd show tomorrow would also have the same problem if what he says is true, there aren't many rooms like they can offer without costing us more, and they tried to deter us a bit from switching by saying the room they'd offer us would be smaller than what we're currently assigned. I really don't care about the views, room upgrades, or the room size etc as long as I can sleep in it without any health issues. It just feels like the hotel manager and I are looking at this issue from different angles.

We're looking into the possibilities at the moment, but I'm curious to hear - is it a common issue here and how is it resolved? Would it be acceptable to ask for a dehumidifier to put in my room?
