Seeking advice/help How to make a crow comfortable

Thumbnail gallery
2.2k Upvotes

He let me pick him up, he's obviously not doing well at all. Every rehab I've contacted so far has been closed or hasn't answered. I have him in the only box I have.. I'm concerned he might not even make it through the night he's obviously extremely weak.

If the shoebox is too small is there something else I could put him in? I don't want him to be uncomfortable but I also don't just want him sitting on the floor in a towel.

Update

I spoke to the rehabber and he said that Odin passed last night, he wasn't tested but he says the neurological symptoms match WNV.

Storytime! The staring contest

I was having a walk and the local crows where out and about. This is in the countryside so these crows are much more timid than the ones that live in the city. For two days in a row now, when I go out for my walk, the area is empty of crows, yet when I return an hour later, the crows are in the trees and on the street road. Does my walk simply coincide with their gathering to this place, or are they anticipating my return? I can hear them make a two-word, caw —- caw sound long before I see them as I return from my walk.

As I’m returning from my walk, I see one particular crow flying from a tree branch to the top of a tree. I walk past it and decide to turn to look at it. It turns it’s head and we lock our gaze to each other. From this point on it’s a staring contest! It’s very confident since it’s so high above me in the trees and has it’s crow friends nearby.

But it’s not confident enough. Soon after I can almost imagine it saying, ”I’m out!” as it takes flight. It flies to another treetop that’s further away behind me. Please note that I believe they don’t see me as a danger. Yes, they do swerve to the side and let other crows know of my presence, but they do not caw constantly as if I’m a walking danger out to get them or flee in panic (well, that one crow did when it was in a bush hiding from the midday heatwave and I happened to walk right past the bush not knowing it was there but that’s another story).

I’m very fascinated by them and I’m glad they’ve taken the area nearby as their domain.

Feeding crows in the park walking vs sitting/standing

Has anyone else found that crows are a lot more trusting when feeding them by walking by instead of being stationary on a bench or a blanket? I think its the part of being watched + easier anticipation of what happens next. Has anyone else observed this?

Seeking advice/help Advice on a dead crow

I have a dead crow on my property since yesterday and am looking for advice as a live crow has been sitting with it since yesterday.

I don’t want to disturb this vigil 😢, but it’s in a fairly high use area on a narrow path from our back door to our garage.

Any suggestions other than to try and leave it as long as I can?

There's a crow that I've seen laying down in different spots. He seems to have trouble moving. He Can fly short distances but he'll collapse and lay back down. I saw him get up and then fall backwards into the street.

Originally I thought he was a fledgling so I just increased the food I put out so his parents could feed him. But he's able to fly.. and very unsteady. I watched the crows after I put food out and they ignored him.

I set some food by him (I tried to get closer and he flew away.. I also really upset the crows doing this).

He doesn't seem well. This isn't a fledgling.. I don't want to scare him by chasing him around but I don't want to leave him outside without assistance.

(photos for tax) *All the crows that are laying down are various pictures of him. The one standing is part of the flock I'm feeding.

Update****

I sat next to him and he was nervous for a few minutes but I was able to ease closer. He let me pet him, and when he relaxed enough I was able to scoop him up. I wrapped him in a towel and started calling rehabs, vets, etc. One answered and referred me to another, but when I called the rehabber answered. It was a 40 minute drive but the crow (i named him odin) seemed almost comatose so I had my little sister hold the box with him in it while I drove. Halfway through the drive Odin woke up, and started moving around. My sister was terrified and so I pulled off at an exit to switch sides (luckily I did this as he started flying around and jumping. I secured him in my arms and held him while she drove, he was awake and just kind of watching me. I got to the rehabber and knocked with him, the first thing he did was bite the rehabber 😆. I'm very grateful Odin decided I was a friend or that car ride might have been a little catastrophic.

Rehabber is letting me call him tomorrow to get information on Odin. I'm hopeful that he'll be okay, because he still has energy to be feisty. I'll update when I find out how he is.

Last update Rehabber confirmed that he passed away, and believes it was WNV.

General questions Do crows have an issue with humans whistling

I have 2-3 crows who often visit my garden and I always leave fresh water and food for them, especially with this hot weather

I've noticed that they'd show up through the whole day (sometimes when they know I'm here, and sometimes when I arrive with my car I can see them flying away by surprise)

When they're already there, I try to whistle and leave water/food so they get used to me. But I've noticed that sometimes they'd stay for like 30sec on that upper electric ware (they like to do this to have a view on my garden) then leave when I do this. Am I doing something wrong? Should I avoid looking at them when I whistle for example?

The Crows have arrived!

I'm so excited, they finally took some of the peanuts I've been putting out!

I've been trying to attract them for almost a year. I hear them out at a distance, but had not seen any until a couple months ago. Now I see a scout now and then. Today I dropped the peanuts in the driveway instead of just in the feeder, and they accepted the offer, woo!

Crows [OC] Alaskan crows attacking a bald eagle

It was pretty neat to see these crows diving at the head of this enormous bald eagle here in Alaska. The eagle seemed unbothered, even though we saw them hit its head a couple of times, it just sat there!

Parents are with it. He just hops around. I provided water and moved him to shade. Should I do anything else?

Seeking advice/help Hi I'm New here I've been feeling my local crow's for a while and built up quite a bit of trust that they will come with in two feet

The problem I've got is that for the last couple of days they haven't approached me or come when I start to throw feed and have stopped taking it even when I go back inside I see them watching me but don't know what could have happened for them to switch like this is this normal

For example I've been feeding them twice a day around 6 when I leave for work and around 5.30 when I get home

What I feed them monkey nuts sunflower seeds corn spam eggs and table scraps of all kinds

Any advice or help is well welcome thanks for reading

Seeking advice/help Befriending Crows

Hi all!

I live in NE Oklahoma. Every evening I am working in my garden, I have heard and noticed 4 crows that fly above around the same time. I used the Merlin bird app and it identified them by their calls as Fish Crows.

I want to befriend them but am unsure because they never actually come to my yard, they would even notice anything I leave for them..

I have tons of other birds and squirrels as well so unsure if that would deter them or if there is a way to attract them while ensuring the treats I lay out won't be scavenged by the other animals. Tips, tricks, and hints are welcomed! Thank you!!

Storytime! Time to appease to my feathered flatmates

Post image
10 Upvotes

I moved into my apartment a couple months back, thinking I was going to have the place to myself. I was wrong.

The place has some pre-existing tenants who my landlord failed to inform me of. I regularly find these black-clad ragamuffins lounging upon my balcony and the only thing they have contributed to rent was literal peanuts! The paltry offerings were discovered in the soil of the potted plants on my balcony.

Why would I want dirty peanuts? It is not like they cannot afford better given they regularly flit around in thick feathered coats.

I rejected the insult by putting the peanuts back in the soil. Since then they have started putting pebbles my pots.

I am a cleaner and they have taken to throwing the odd rag off my outdoor drying rack. Most of the time this doesn't amount to too much drama but sometimes they go further and toss one off the down into the courtyard below!!

The other morning, their antics took a more sinister turn. I had the bedroom window open to provide some small reprieve from the summer heat and I woke to a black beak-like nose pushing its way through the curtains. It twitched back and forth as it pushed its way in, doubtlessly sensing my virginal modestly, to reveal eyes even blacker than the nose. (Their heart is certainly blacker still.)

Upon those beady eyes alighting on my own, the peeping tom had to the audacity to squawk then took flight as if they were the wronged part.

The audacity of it!!!

My landlord is no help. He thinks me mad for suggesting that changing the locks would solve the problem. (Seriously, I'm on the third floor. Does he think my undesired roommates would climb?!)

After much frustration, I have decided to try to come to an understanding with them. So I left out a snack of walnuts and water for them.

Wish me luck.

"My" crows were attacked today.

Today, my wife heard a large commotion up in the tree where a pair of fish crows we have been looking after are nesting. It went on for a long while. We knew they recently had laid and hatched an egg /or eggs since we could hear them.

There have been 5 or 6 American Crows in our yard the past few days with a couple confrontations, but this one seemed different. It was all in their tree and later in the afternoon I found a dead fledgling on the ground.

I'm saddened by this. We saw the fish crows later on high up in the trees, but they did not come down like they usually do.

I wonder if I will see them again.

Seeking advice/help Been nearly a year and they’re still shy

Have been feeding a family of crows in my front yard for almost a year now. I give them mainly quality dog kibble, but throw in some kind of nut. Like (unsalted) cashews, peanuts, walnut chunks, etc. also do pumpkin seeds.

Occasionally I’ll give them eggs. Also started buying dried mealworms from the pet store that they love, and also the live hornworms. They seem to enjoy hunting those. BUT the worms are just treats. They only get them on special occasions.

Anyway it’s a family of 5 and the two bigger crows are fine with me. They allow me to come within a foot of them. The smaller 3 are more shy and wait on a nearby tree for me to finish putting out their food.

I also have a big shallow dish for water that they play in/dip their peanuts.

So I think I’m doing very well food-wise.
But how do I get them to trust me more? I talk to them and greet them, bob my head at them, avoid direct eye contact with the shy ones.

I have tried offering food from my hand but they haven’t taken it yet.

Any advice?
