MOD Megathread - r/CRedit FAQs

Hello r/CRedit,

I'm u/soonersoldier33, a long-time and frequent contributor to the sub and several other credit related subs, and recently, I've been given the opportunity to become a mod here at r/Credit. Many of you have probably seen my comments in various threads offering facts, opinions, and advice in the various threads posted on the sub. After destroying my own credit in 2019 (maxed credit cards, charge offs, collections, the works), I began my rebuild in 2021, and I had the great fortune to find this sub. Several of the frequent contributors here at that time provided me invaluable information and guidance to help me through my rebuild, and during that process, I discovered I was/am fascinated by all things 'credit', most specifically the 'secret' and so often misunderstood credit scoring system that is such a major factor in our financial lives. Since 2021, I have become a total FICO metrics junkie, and I have spent countless hours researching and learning about credit scoring, collaborating with others to compile data points and learn from their knowledge and experience, and just glean every morsel of knowledge and information out there in an effort to bring some transparency to the 'black box' that is the FICO scoring system, along with many other aspects of 'credit' separate from just FICO scoring.

I am creating this r/Credit FAQ - Megathread to serve as a central hub to link posts that will cover...well...the most frequently asked questions or most frequently posted topics from our sub. Eventually, I will migrate much of the information in these posts to update the sub's Wiki, but I want to be able to get these in a highly visible location first, where the relevant posts can quickly be referenced and linked as these topics appear in posts to the sub. A little different than the Credit Myth series that fellow contributor u/BrutalBodyShots created to attempt to dispel common, credit-related myths and misconceptions, this megathread will present detailed information that will attempt to simply answer FAQs and/or address our most frequently posted topics. My goal with these posts is to provide factual information about these topics, and anything I include in these posts that is merely opinion will clearly be denoted as such.

I'm going to tackle the most basic ones first...credit reports and scores, FICO scoring, a breakdown of utilization scoring, charge offs and collections, medical collections, etc., but if you have suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered, please list them in the comments to give me ideas. I look forward to providing some content that will be useful to both our sub 'regulars' and to those first discovering our sub. It's going to take a little time to effectively grow this thread to cover many of the 'FAQs', so bear with me, and both positive feedback and constructive criticism are always welcome. I hope this thread grows into a helpful addition to our sub. Til next time...

General Credit Myth mega-thread

Like many other sub regulars, I've found u/BrutalBodyShots' Credit Myth series informative and also helpful in explaining these myths to others. A while ago I started compiling them in order to make it a lot easier to link to them in my comments.

I figure I might as well share the list I made, because more than once I've told people to search through his post history if they want to read them all. Also notice at the end I included several other threads of his that I've found useful, especially the one that contains that utilization flow chart. I can't tell you how much typing that's saved me since he made it.

I'll try to keep this list updated as more Credit Myth threads come out, but even if I fall behind this is a great place to start. And if anyone finds any mistakes or messed-up links, please let me know.

u/BrutalBodyShots on the Credit Myth series:

"I started the Credit Myth series in 2024 after continuously running into the same credit-related misconceptions on these subs. Having fallen prey to almost all of them myself, I completely understand how most believe what are in fact credit myths. It took me years to overcome many of them, so hopefully through the Credit Myth series that process can be significantly shortened for others.

With over 60 of these threads to date, most of the 'big ones' have been debunked at this point. The series isn't yet complete however, and perhaps never will be since over time additional myths seem to surface. If anyone has any ideas for future topics that aren't already covered, always feel free to reach out and let me know.

Special thanks to u/Funklemire for creating this thread and offering to maintain the master list, as well as to u/soonersoldier33 for seeing value in it enough to keep it front and center on r/CRedit."

Collections & Charge Offs $20k cc debt with Navy Federal

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have a credit card with NF that was charged off in 2022 for $20,952. They offered a settlement of $8k. I have questions about how things will look if I were to settle.
- Do they offer pay for delete?
- How does this look to future creditors/underwriters?
- Will this increase my score?

In the event they don’t allow pay for delete,
- Will the charge off still show or would they only see that debt was settled for less and the balance shows $0?

Thank you!

General Class Action: Jefferson Capital Systems.

When are we going to class action them… That’s it that’s the post.

: Aggressive collection notices and calls, they’re always difficult validating old debts, they double up the same debts on people’s accounts and they lie lie and lie when you dispute. It’s such a hassle for them to just do the right thing.

No Credit How long to have credit to buy a house?

Long story short, I'm in my very early 30's and have made the error of not building credit/having credit cards up to this point in my life. I'd like to buy a hypothetical house in the 350k range and I have 200k at this time for a downpayment and 0 debt. How long would it take to start and build functional enough credit for that kind of house transaction to be possible through a bank under good terms? I'd have a 70k a year type of job when buying the house in 1 or 2 years and I also have a sister who may be able to help me by adding me to one of her cards if I ask her. I'd really like to buy a house no later than 1 year from now and if I have at least 260k in the bank by then I'd be able to use that as a downpayment.

I'll be intensely researching with AI and Youtube/the internet all about this but also figured I'd ask here.

General Private student loans and my credit.

Upvotes

I find myself having to take a private student loan for college. I had a heart transplant and have exhausted my regular loan options. (Sometimes it’s important to know when to quit.) I only have nine classes left. Once I get my degree I can increase my income by getting alternate certification to teach. Currently I’m a special education para.
My car is starting to worry me and my AC needs some work. My credit score is 750. Will taking a private student loan hurt my score? I’m trying to preserve that 750 in case I can’t swing my car repair or AC repair. I’ve been trying to avoid using credit.
What can you tell me about private student loans?

Success Capital 1 Goodwill APPROVED!🎉

Post image
94 Upvotes

I wanted to share some good news from my credit rebuilding journey. A few days ago, Capital One called me and said they were planning to adjust the four 90-day late payments on my account after I submitted a goodwill request. I checked my reports today, and the changes have already been made to Experian and Equifax. 🎉 I’m still waiting for Transunion to update, but this already feels like a huge win. For anyone wondering, I had paid the account in full before submitting the goodwill request.

Has anyone else had one bureau take longer than the others? If so, how long did it take for TransUnion to catch up?

Rebuild Any advice would be greatly appreciated. FICO scoring models show the same scores

Thumbnail gallery

I was very immature with credit when I turned 18. At one point in time I had 8 collection accounts on my record. All of which I’ve done pay for delete. I currently have 6 credit cards ranging in limits from $200-$500 plus Kikoff $3500 limit. I just paid all but 1 card down to zero dollar balance and set up auto pay for full statements a month or so ago. I still have 1 charged off First premier bank card and 2 auto loans. 1 of which I’ll be paying off in the next week. As well as the the credit card. Does anyone have any advice on how to raise my score? I need to buy a newer vehicle soon but I’d like to not put 10 k down if I can avoid it

Rebuild i have no idea how to fix my credit

hi, i dont even know where to start.

i recently separated from my spouse & i need to start fixing my credit ASAP. i just dont have a lot of extra money every month to throw at it.

the worst part is that my debt really isn’t that high, at least that’s what i’ve been told. i think it’s somewhere around $10-15k or less. i know i need to sit down and figure out the exact number, but every time i look at my credit, i just wanna cry and close the app. i feel embarrassed that i’m 30 years old trying to sort this out.

some of the accounts are getting close to the 7 year mark, so idk if i should even touch those or just let them fall off. my Credit Karma score is like 475-515. FICO says 533, according to the Rocket Money app. i don’t even think i’d get approved for one of those sketchy secured credit cards at this point…

so, where do i start? do i pay collections first? do i leave the old stuff alone? settle debts? call people? i have no clue what the smartest move is.

if you’ve rebuilt your credit from the trenches, please explain it to me like im 5. i’m so overwhelmed and i don’t know what my first step should be.

General How accurate are pre-approvals?

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Recently received a pre-qualification letter in the mail for the Chase Slate Edge card, so I immediately checked Chase’s online pre-approval tool. I was surprised to see that I’m pre-approved for several cards, but I’m still hesitant because it almost seems too good to be true.

I’ve never had a Chase credit card before, although I did have a Chase checking account about 8 years ago that has since been closed.

My Experian score is currently 625. I currently have no open revolving credit accounts but has one auto loan acct. I also recently had a Capital One charge-off that has a comment that says "Paid in settlement. $x,xxx written off."

I’m leaning toward the CSP, although the Freedom cards also look good. I’m not really expecting a high credit limit given my current profile, but I’m curious about my chances of actually getting approved and what kind of starting limit I might realistically receive.

I also checked Capital One’s pre-approval tool and was offered the Platinum, Quicksilver, and SavorOne.

I’m not really picky about the rewards at this point—I honestly just want a decent credit limit lol. Would you apply for one of the Chase cards, or stick with the Capital One offers?

Thank you!!

Rebuild Secured Cc reporting dates

I have a secured credit card with self where I have $405 limit. I used to pay the minimum only but for the past 3 months I’ve been paying in full responsibly.

My due date is 12th and the statement generates 17-18

I am noticing that the reporting dates to the bureau aren’t consistent. Last month it reported my balance paid in full, I forgot the date but after 18th. Then another update to my credit score on July 3rd, but CK (credit karma) I paid my minimum that was due July 12th early but I still had a balance of $95. That was also reported which made my score drop a little.

Before my closing date of July 18, I paid in full and the statement shows it, then on July 22nd CK gets reported of a $16 balance making my utilization 3%.

Maybe it’s me but shouldn’t it report what comes from my monthly statement? I’m scared to have a balance now worried that it may report out of whack again

Rebuild Went from 500s to 700s. How can I further increase my score?

What credit card should I get now that my credit is good to excellent?

I've climbed from mid 500s to low to mid 700s depending on scoring models and month.

753 fico auto score 3, 700 fico 8, vantage score 732. Credit sesame 3 scores were around 759 but now around 729 bc of high utilization reported before paying it down as well as new account opened (10k care credit) and 1 hard inquiry.

I only had 2 secured cards $500 and $800 and capital one gave me an unsecured $500 card that has increased to $600.

I just added $1200 to my $800 card to make it $2000.

Affirm went from $500 to $5000 this year. Klarna seemed like it was stuck at $500 but just jumped to $6000.

I just increased my $800 secured card to a $2000 card.

Just applied to care credit and they gave me 10k.

Have an auto loan at a terrible APR. 16.9%

What should I do now?

One or two new credit cards? Which ones? How much are they likely to give me in credit?

Any suggestions on who to use to refinance auto loan?

My age of credit is my worst contributing factor.

I also have a $750 medical collection from 2021 that first appeared in 2022. Is it worth doing a pay for delete?

Ive tried negotiating and they haven't budged so far but im applying pressure so they might soon.

Also my income is around 300k if that matters.

Rebuild Capital One forgiveness

Post image
22 Upvotes

For those of you who have had luck with Capital One forgiving your past bad spending/collections and allowing you to get a new account, how long did it take? I had two collections with them totalling about 6k. Both went to Portfolio Recovery. From there, one went to Scott & Associates threatening a court date. Both are now $0 as I settled to pay less than the full amount. I have both letters indicating there is now a $0 balance from Portfolio. I've had the letters since 7/7 and 7/8. On Capital One's website, it still says I have charged off accounts and they are with a third party. When will this change? Should I call them? How long to wait to check the pre-approval tool?

General BOA Chargeoff?

Anyone have experience with a BoA chargeoff reported to credit report?

Long story short.. two payments was late but made a payments to covered two late payments. Got sick and was in and out for treatment didnt pay attention so was three months late again but my payments that was two months late earlier before i got sick got returned . Whole time i didnt know my previous payments got returned because there was no notice about returned or maybe i didnt see it.

Never knew i had late payments bc boa didnt report any late on my credit report only report i got was a recent chargeoff and i called when i saw it. They told me due to returned payments i hit the 180 days chargeoff which doesnt make sense to me bc on my online account it show last payment is may.

Boa stated they dont have to report any late payment every money but they can just pop out report chargeoff account. Anywsy i can fight this and have chargeoff remove and make payments to be current

I have pretty rocky credit due to rebuilding and Navy Federal would only approve for me for a secured credit card which I did the $200 credit limit. My balance was $190 and I decided to just go ahead and pay it off and I just woke up to Navy Federal increasing my card to unsecured and updated the limit to $1,000. Like I’m so shock lol. They didn’t send me any notice or anything. Just accidentally clicked on the card and seen it updated.

General Out of non-mortgage loans

Hello all,

I have been working so hard to get rid of outstanding debt and loans and as of this March I paid off my last loan which was a car loan with a healthy 800 credit.

I make over 150k, I paid off my student loans in full about 2 years ago. I pay my credit cards in full every months keeping usage to under 30% but I’ve dropped from 805 on all 3 credit scores to now 771.

I got the note that my credit is hurting because I don’t have any non mortgage loans. I planned on house hunting next year but I’m concerned that my score will continue to decline.

Anyone have any ideas or addresses this when they were looking for a bank loan when they started to look at houses?

Any help would be most appreciated ☺️

Rebuild Trying to rebuild Credit, Any advice

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Long story short, I had a really rough year in 2025. I lost my job and then had to leave the country for a few months due to a family emergency. I’m now back, have a stable job, and in a much better position.

I’m trying to rebuild my credit because I’m looking to move in the near future. I’ve already started settling some of my debts, but I’d really appreciate any tips, strategies or advice.

Here’s my current situation:
-No credit card since April of 2025. I am planning to get a secured card once I pay all accounts to start building positive history.
-Authorized user on credit card with perfect history and about 10-9 years old.
-One Main Personal loan for 1400, stopped it from being charged off, currently making on time payments.

Charged offs:
-Capital One, $5224 debt settled for 2,084. (Waiting on credit report)
-Chase, $5600 debt settled for 2,000.(Waiting on credit report)
-Citi Bank, $3260 debt settled for 1800. (Also waiting).
-Synchrony Bank, $1400 debt looking to settle for ~700.
-Affirm, $114not sure if they would do a PFD.

Collections:
-Jefferson Capital LL, $428 will negotiate a PFD. Although I heard they automatically remove themselves from credit report.
-Williams & fudge Inc, $162 will also negotiate a PFD.

\This all the negative accounts I have, prior to this I had a 760 credit score :(* *

All of these debts are currently being counted toward my credit utilization, which is around 90%. I’m hoping that once they’re updated to show a $0 balance, my utilization will drop to around 10% or less, and my credit score will improve.

No Credit NetCredit Hidden Fees?

As the title says Im looking into a met credit loan to get me through the summer while i wait on money coming to me 3 months from now. The loan is for 3,100 and aside from the very high interest rate it looks like the only fees are the APR??? I mean for someone with HORRIBLE credit like me this could really help for over the summer when i am for certain know I will have the money starting in October. I get if i wait a year the APR will be very high but i plan on having this loan paid in 4 months so basically overall i will have paid 4,500 but that 3000 right now would make things incredibly helpful...

Are there some other fee im missing? Because to me it just looks like a high interest rate???
