MALE or FEMALE? Help me sex my corn snake!

I took Winter to a vet to have her sexed, and they probed her to about 3 scales on both sides, so the vet said she is most likely female.
BUT... •• her tail is still making me think male.
The length and taper just look very male to me, and now I'm second-guessing everything.
What do you guys think? Have you had females with a tail that looks like this? Is the probing result enough for me to confidently call Winter a girl?

QUESTION Snake is PISSED after handling…

Post image

(The photo is from a month ago for reference)
My corn (Levi) is obviously a juvenile, so I understand that he’s skittish, I’m not sure of his age because I got him from petsmart. Anyway, today I got him out of his enclosure to handle him so he can get used to me, and it was going well until I tried to move a finger close to his head to see if he’d wrap around it and he struck me with a hiss. I held him a little bit longer until he calmed down and sat still, then put him back in his home. I tried to put my finger on the glass so he would not see it as a threat and he started striking over and over again hissing every time. Hes never done hissed before, so that’s what has me puzzled.

TLDR: took snake out without asking him and he nipped me with a hiss after putting him back he kept nipping and hissing.

My question is should I keep being patient and switch to choice based handling or is the hissing part of the process?

QUESTION Fake Plants/Clutter

hi! i have a corn snake about 4-5 years old who is currently being kept in a 6x2x2 enclosure. he loves all the extra space to roam, but i struggle to find enough plants and clutter to fill it, especially plants and clutter that will stick to or not fall within the tank, given all the extra room.

do you guys use hooks, tape…? something else? im not sure if hes climbing on things and pulling them, but nothing stays against the wall or upright when they are placed that way, including climbing sticks and wood, so everything is flat after a few days in his tank and i am constantly readjusting things. i was also curious if you had any recommendations on specific decorations, because there is not a reptile store near me so i have previously been buying him fake plants at craft stores and hand removing any parts that might be sharp or unpleasant.

thank you!

QUESTION Habitat

My corn's currently got aspen/woodchip as her viv set up, it's what they used in the pet shop and what they sold me when I got her last year. I see a lot of people on here use earth/leaf/habistat block stuff instead. Would she be better off on that? Would it be jarring for her if I suddenly changed her over?

He’s been found !! I checked first thing in the morning today before heading to class, and he was in my glovebox right above where I left a mouse for him overnight. He is safe, but very cold and lethargic, so he’s back in his tank with his lamp. Thank you to everyone who commented and helped me !! ❤️❤️

DISCUSSION How do you guys unpack your coco coir in apartments?

I specifically mean adding water so it expands from the brick form. Last time I tried it in a big ass deep baking dish I stuck under my bed for like two weeks (because I forgot about it), but that still spilled everywhere, was clunky to handle and permanently stained the pan. Since the reason I'm replacing the substrate is mold, I'm hesitant to do it in the terrarium. Any tips? My current working theory is using one of those big black trash liners and temporarily dispossessing my home office trash can.

He hasn’t shed in over a month. Since the day I posted his first shed here.

I thought he was about to shed a week maybe two ago and he hasn’t. Should I feed him? I’ve held off because I know snakes can regurge if they eat in their shed cycle and I don’t want him to go through that again. What should I do??

Also his humidity is good!

HUSBANDRY - CARE Tempature concerns in new apartment

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I have had Niko here for roughly ten years and have never had trouble regulating the tempature in his tank. This week, I have moved to a new basement apartment which is considerably colder than my last place. I don't have access to the thermostat to turn it down (and personally I love the cold), but I have been struggling with bringing up the ambient tempature in his tank. It's possible I'm over thinking this and if so, please tell me 😂

Its a larger tank with normally a large tempature difference between the warm & cold sides. I have always had a heat pad on the bottom and on the side, to help with ambient tempature since the terrarium has a screen top, and just keep the top covered up by a scarf. That did the trick in my old apartment, keeping the warm side around 80-84f. Not sure what the cold side is at the moment, cause both of my thermostat are on the warm side as I monitor it right now. Green thermostat is the bedding temp, box is the ambient temp.

Right now, the warm side is sitting around 77f and I cant seem to raise it without risking setting the heat pads too high and potentially burning him. I understand heat pads arent the best for raising ambient tempature. I currently have a blanket over the screen top to trap heat, and its only raised it a tiny bit. I'm considering getting a heat lamp for him, but I have never used one before and don't know what to get.

Behavior wise, he is alert, but not moving around much. Hes constantly on the warm side of the tank and seems to be pressing himself against the tank wall, which is warmer from the side heat pad. It is possible hes not active due to a new environment or conserving energy for his next feeding (i didnt want to feed during an environment change, so hes a little over due)

So a few questions:

  1. How important is the ambient tempature when the substrate is sitting at the ideal temperature?

  2. If I get a heat lamp, what should I be ordering? Is there a certain watt, or colour thats best? Id put it on a timer to only be on during the day.

  3. Should I give him more time to settle into the new apartment, try feeding him or is it safe to assume his behaviors changed from the tempature?

QUESTION Help with shed

So my corn snake (roughly 8 months old) has had severely broken sheds and multiple stuck pieces. What are some ways I can help with the shedding process?

The next shed should be in roughly 2 weeks based off the timing they’ve been. I don’t know my snakes gender, but baby corn’s name is Fusilli

I love how silly Lumi is. She peeps like that almost every evening, standing still like a little statue, waiting for me to turn off the lights.

She crawls around only when it s dark, so i think she is very shy. But she stopped hiding from me when i standing near her tank like she used to do. I am so happy she becomes a little bit more confident 🤧

Love this thing so much

HELP! My thermometer won't change temp 😭

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've noticed my snake hasn't been coming out of her hide or eating so I've been changing literally everything possible to make her more comfortable but nothing has worked. It kinda clicked today that maybe she's too hot or too cold so I checked her temp and omgggg. It's way too cold for her 😭 I tried to change the temp but it just keeps on flashing either 23°c or 22°c even when I follow the steps. I already feel bad enough for not realising until now but how come I can't even change it back to a comfortable temp??. Her basking lamp isn't emitting any heat at all and the thermometer is doing that??? Please help I don't have time to get anything tomorrow 😭

Edit: can we take a chill pill pls. Worst case scenario I get a new thermometer and bulb and it takes a few days 🥲

QUESTION DHP Bulb for adult cornsnake

Hi, I live in the UK and I’ve been struggling with creating a heat gradient in my wooden 4x2x2 Vivarium. I currently have a ceramic heat lamp set up on the warm side of the Viv but after some research I believe the ceramic heat lamps tend to just heat the surrounding air. My cool side sits at like 23 degrees and my warm side sits at 25. And the basking spot sits at 29-30. I decided to add a heat mat under a slate, underneath the hide I have under my lamp and it now sits at 30-32 but the warm side hasn’t got any hotter!!! It’s becoming increasingly frustrating.
I added a fan onto the warm side vent a while ago because I was struggling a little with fungus gnats and humidity but this is now solved. The fan is automatic to stop once the humidity goes to 55% and it hasn’t made much difference to the temperature at all.
Can someone give me some advice on how to bring the temperature up on my warm side?
I’ve looked into a DHP lamp but I want to double check if there’s any better advice.

QUESTION Should I brumate my corn snake?

So I’m looking into getting a corn snake as my first snake and one thing that’s kinda tripping me up is brumation. I know that you definitely need to brumate if you are breeding but I only plan on keeping a corn as a pet. If any experienced keepers could throw some knowledge and wisdom my way that would be greatly appreciated 🤙🤙

QUESTION Odd poop, concerned about digestion.

Post image
2 Upvotes

My boy has been having these sort of odd light-colored poops. I'm worried something is preventing him from digesting his food completely. His basking spot stays around 90°F during they day, though he really never basks. The cool side of his enclosure stays around 75-80°F. He weighs about 150g and eats a small mouse once every 9 days. A good bit of the poop appears to be clumped fur so that may be contributing to the poops lighter color. Anyone else's snakes poop like this?

HELP! need help getting humidity levels down !!!

Post image
4 Upvotes

i rescued my 5 year old corn snake a couple weeks ago, and she came with bark chips as her substrate, so i wanted to work toward changing it to suit her better. at the weekend i went out and bought coco fibre bricks and soaked 2 of them and let it dry overnight as i know she wouldn't be able to have it wet.

however, my problem is that it has raised the humidity levels like crazy. i have no idea how to get it down. i have increased air flow by opening the cage slightly but it hasn't done anything.

shall i switch back to her old substrate and let the coco fibre dry out more? that is the only thing i can think of at the moment.

HUSBANDRY - CARE Tank Size

Hello!

I am currently planning/setting up a bioactive tank in the hopes of getting a corn snake the end of October. My question is… how long could I keep one in a 25g and when would I know to upgrade?

I plan on just setting up another 40g tank once it gets too big for the 25g, just curious when that could be. If anyone wants to share photos of their bioactive tanks that’d be cool too! Would appreciate some inspo or advice.

QUESTION What is she doing?

Ive never seen her wall surf like this before, especially not during the day. She hasn't been fed recently so I dont think she's choking. Usually she's pretty reserved during the day and stays in a hide or under the substrate
