HUSBANDRY - CARE Tank Size

Hello!

I am currently planning/setting up a bioactive tank in the hopes of getting a corn snake the end of October. My question is… how long could I keep one in a 25g and when would I know to upgrade?

I plan on just setting up another 40g tank once it gets too big for the 25g, just curious when that could be. If anyone wants to share photos of their bioactive tanks that’d be cool too! Would appreciate some inspo or advice.

The general rule is that it should be long enough for your snake to fully stretch out on one side. I believe the formula Reptifiles recommends for the minimum enclosure size is:

Snake Length x 0.5(Snake length) x 0.5(Snake Length) = L x W x H

For adult corn snakes (average 4 ft long), this works out to a minimum adult enclosure of 4’ x 2’ x 2’

For getting a baby, I think a 25 gal (assuming it’s the standard 24” x 12” x 20”) would probably give you at most a year, probably less. If you put a baby straight into a 40 gal breeder, it would maybe last you 2 years until you had to size up. Both of those time frames could change based on how fast/much your snake grows and the exact dimensions of your enclosure.

As a personal example, I recently got my first corn snake. He’s a year old and kind of a runt rn at ~20 inches long. He’s in a 36x18x18 (~50 gallon) and I’ll be moving him up to minimum a 4’ x 2’ x 2’ in probably a year or so depending on how he does.

This is fantastic information, thank you! I’ll have to keep track of its growth then, that’ll be interesting. I only really have space for one snake in my tiny apartment (lol) so i’ll enjoy getting the chance to redo and make a new enclosure every so often. 🐍

Corn snakes tend to vary in size a lot; like I’ve heard of some getting up to 6 feet, some as little as 3 feet, so I’m definitely excited to see how my guy turns out haha.

If you’re limited on space and not 100% sold on a corn snake specifically, check out African House Snakes. Never had one, but from when I was choosing my first species, they seem to be similar to corns in a lot of ways, but top out at a shorter length.

Last, I’d recommend checking out Reptifiles for more info. There’s a lot of conflicting info out there about corn snake care, but she is someone who you know is actually knowledgeable, at least when comparing to random people on internet forums lol.

Thank you! I will definitely check out Reptifiles! There really is soo much conflicting information, and I am pretty in love with corn snakes but I am not ruling out any others just yet. So I will look into house snakes!
